End of a Trophy Laden Era
After 5 years and 5 League and Cup doubles, a National title and three Yorkshire titles thrown in, it is an
emotional goodbye to the best sporting year Honley has ever known.
The final game of that era was to be versus Shelley at Storthes Hall. The scene was set for a glorious
finale to a story that will be told for years to come, only Shelley did not read the script and played the
part of spoilers perfectly as they took the lead early which left keeper Lucas Chappell with no chance
of stopping it.
As the crowd grew more nervous Jordan Williams stepped up to the plate and scored the equalizer
from the edge of the box. A period of dominance from Honley didn’t yield a goal and Shelley struck
again with another sucker punch 2-1. Adam Page restored parity only for Shelley again against the
run of play to go 3-2 up with only 3 mins to play. Jordan Williams stepped forward once again to save
the legacy and send the game into extra time at 3-3.
Over the last 5 years Captain George Sykes-Kenworthy has played the role of hero on more than
one occasion and in his last game, and with the game heading to penalties, he again dug deep and
produced the match winning goal and the perfect ending to a perfect time at Honley.
What an exceptional group of individuals who saved their grittiest performance and showed
their resolve for when they really needed it. A big thanks to parents who were fantastic over
the years and to Mr O’Connor for his leadership.

Fond Farewells
This year we are saying fond farewells to two
very important members of our team
Mr Sharrock has been with Honley since qualifying as
a teacher over 35 years ago (since 1979!). During that
time he has worked as a PE Teacher, Head of Year,
Head of PE, Assistant Headteacher and Acting
Deputy Headteacher, he has been vital in the
smooth operations of the school.
Over the years Mr Sharrock has seen thousands of students
graduate from Honley and he has been a positive influence in
so many of their high school years. In the last 15 years or so he
has been reunited with many other students when their children
have attended Honley.
Mr Sharrock will be greatly missed and no longer will we
hear ex-students and parents gasp...
‘What? Mr Sharrock is still here?’
Mrs Janet Gillis will be leaving us at the end of this academic year to
retire to the life of grandchildren duties, walking and gardening!
Both past and present students and their families have said what a wonderful
influence Mrs Gillis has been, how supportive, caring and encouraging. At her
surprise retirement party, on 8th July, it was fantastic to see so many families join
us and it really showed how much of an impact she has had on so many different
people. For 24 years Mrs Gillis has been an integral part of school and especially
the Resourced Provision. She will be greatly missed by staff and students alike.

Development Project
Over the last year Honley High School has been working
jointly on a project with the Rotary Club of Holmfirth,
Northern Rail, Network Rail, the Penistone Line
Partnership, ONE17 Architects and Interior Designers,
and the Huddersfield, Penistone and Sheffield Rail User
Group. We would like to see Honley Railway Station
re-developed to make it an even safer, more accessible
and passenger friendly station to benefit the local and
wider community.

drawings to be completed and submitted to Northern Rail for
consideration. Obviously this will be a huge project not only
timely but costly.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream,
Beaumont Park
- William Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Beaumont Park provided the perfect setting for the outstanding
performance by the Honley drama students in their RSC Dream
Team 2016 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Unfortunately the weather had other plans and despite the actors continuing
on regardless of the rain, Mr Cotgrave sensibly called a finish 10 minutes
from the end before they were all soaked through.
This is the first time students have performed outside and following all the
positive feedback we are planning another event next year.
Thank you to Friends of Beaumont Park for inviting us.
Honley Summerfest
There may have been thunder, and quite a downpour,
but this didn’t deter the Summerfest participants,
performers and helpers.
Thank you to our Trust Partners Locala Community Partnership
for sponsoring the event, to Team Activ for providing such
brilliant activities on the day and to the Lawrence Batley
Theatre for donating theatre tickets. Also thanks to our
students, to Honley Juniors, and Friends of Honley High and
Junior Schools for making this event a success.

In March 13 members of the Honley High School Fairtrade Forum
were invited to visit the Houses of Parliament for Cotton onto
Fairtrade.
The event was to highlight the start
of Fairtrade Fortnight and to launch
the new All Party Parliamantary
Group (APPG) for Fairtrade of which
Jason McCartney, our local MP, Cochairs. Along with the students were
members of the Holme Valley Fair
Trade Group, The Co-op, over 30
MPs and the Fairtrade Foundation
including two farmers from Kenya
who are directly impacted by
Fairtrade – Julio and Patrick.

Tim Aldridge, Head of Policy and
Research for the Fairtrade Foundation
wrote to thank the students and
noted ‘It is not an easy thing to speak
to important people like MPs, and the
students did a truly excellent job of
getting over any nerves and putting
them on the spot with questions
about their support for Fairtrade!
They were a credit to your school.’
As Martin Luther King famously said,
‘before you finish eating breakfast
in the morning, you’ve depended on
more than half the world’. Despite our
dependence on farmers and workers
Ben – ‘I really enjoyed the trip to Parliament; it was fascinating to learn how Fairtrade
works and to speak with the people getting involved in Fairtrade’
for the foods, drinks and products
that we love, about 795 million people
are undernourished globally.
To show our support for Fairtrade,
Year 7 students took part in a
fairtrade breakfast during form
time. The Co-op in Holmfirth very
kindly donated a fantastic fairtrade
hamper which was raffled to raise
funds for the schools Fairtrade
Forum. Additionally Helen and
Sophie from fairandfunky, one of our
Trust partners, joined the morning
and set students a quick fairtrade
quiz to complete whilst enjoying
some fairtrade bananas and snacks
accompanied by live music, from our
talented musicians.

have had a very productive year
including being finalists at the
Huddersfield Examiner Schools
Awards for the Active Community
Award. The team are looking
forward to building on their
successes and further promoting
fairtrade in the next academic
year.
Visit to
Camira Fabrics
In June a group of 11 students had the opportunity to
visit Camira Fabrics in Meltham who are also one of
our Trust partners.
Camira Fabrics operates a textile factory in Meltham and sells
over 8 million metres of fabric into the office furniture and
train, bus and coach seating markets on an annual basis.
The trip was a real success, with the students gaining
a useful insight into the company and the different
employment opportunities available within the industry.

Well done to the Under 14 team...
Try it Tuesday
Over the last term Honley High
School has been providing a
range of Try it Tuesday sessions
for the primary schools in the
Honley Pyramid.
These have been run by the Year 9 Sports Leaders and have focused
on sports which will be included in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Sports included Badminton, Table tennis, Basketball, Handball,
Football and Athletics. Over 60 students from a variety of ages
attended the sessions.
There will also be a Boccia event later in the Summer
term to allow students to try a Paralympic Sport.
Girls Touch Rugby Competition
Our hockey teams go from strength to strength and
2015/6 has been our most successful year yet.
Both the Under 14 and Under 16 teams were outstanding
remaining unbeaten in both the Kirklees League throughout
the year and the Kirklees Tournament. A fantastic
achievement.
In April five Honley High School students refereed the Year 8 Kirklees Girls Touch
Rugby Competition at The Zone, Huddersfield.
This was followed by a game over
half time between the Huddersfield
Giants and the Leeds Rhinos.
All referees were fantastic and
grew in confidence throughout the
event. They have gained valuable
experience and developed links
with the Giants Community Team. Hopefully this will lead to further
opportunities, in Rugby at all levels and leadership, for them and Honley
High School in the future.
Pop Maths Quiz
Congratulations to Honley High
Year 9 Mathletes who won the
Pop Maths Quiz at Greenhead
College in June.
It was a fantastic competition and really challenged the students
knowledge of maths pitting them against the best young
mathematicians in Kirklees.

Honley Badminton
Teams Triumph
Honley’s badminton players have once again dominated the local competitions.
The Under 16 boys teams, were crowned Pennine Partnership, Kirklees and
West Yorkshire Champions and were unlucky to miss out on the Yorkshire title
at York in March 2016 finishing in their best ever second place.
The Under 16 and Under 14 girls also played to a brilliant level and are now
Pennine Partnership and Kirklees Champions.
Our Year 11 badminton stars are now moving on and a special mention goes
to Michael Bleasdale, Year 11 badminton prefect for his help with the regular
coaching sessions on Wednesdays which are always well attended. Following
the success of this year the future looks positive for badminton at Honley.

Championships.
Year 8 Football
Following on from last year’s League and Cup
double the Year 8s, captained by Huey Burchil,
went one better this year by winning the Treble
League, Cup and 5-A-Side.
Next year, going into Year 9, the boys are
hoping to add a Yorkshire title to their
already impressive trophy haul.
Honley was well represented at the
West Yorkshire Schools Athletics
Championships in June.
Seven students participated and
performed superbly. Macy Ellis,
junior girls 200m, Aran Thomas,
Year 9 junior boys discus and
Rosie Wragg, Year 9, junior girls
shot all won their events and are
now West Yorkshire Champions.
Congratulations!
Junior Athlete Education
Programme (JAE)
Super 8s Success
Both the Year 7s and the combined Year 8/9
Super 8s Athletics Teams were up for the
challenge to complete a track, field and a relay
event to gain points for the joint boys and girls
teams. Honley came away with two third places
and bronze medals for our athletics stars.

Special mention goes to Aran Thomas
who achieved a 100 point maximum for
his javelin throw. A first ever in a Kirklees
competition and noted nationally by the
competition organisers.
Our Year 11 students are one
of our most talented year
groups for some time. Several
individuals have made their way
in their chosen sports and are
recognised as elite talent.
They have been supported for
much of their time in school by
the JAE programme, a school
teacher led mentor system. This
has allowed them to develop as
athletes and ensures they achieve
academically too. Look out in the
future for the class of 2016 our
sports stars of the future.

Iby Knill
Auschwitz Survivor Visit
Article by Amy Jackson and Niamh Everson
Whilst studying the holocaust, we were lucky enough to have the
opportunity to meet and talk to holocaust survivor, Iby Knill. We all
gained a greater understanding of the events leading from World
War 2 through hearing Iby’s fascinating yet heart-wrenching story.
Iby told us how she began her life in Czechoslovakia in 1923, she was
hard-working and aspired to achieve well in her graphic design course.
However, it became clear things weren’t going to be easy. Everything
was changing. The world around her began to discriminate against Jews,
Iby was Jewish. After her teenage years spent escaping to Hungary, she
eventually found herself situated at Aushwitz-Birkenau. Her languages
helped her to volunteer as a doctor at the camp, in her talk she advised
us ‘If you ever get the chance to learn a language, do’. Once liberated, Iby
returned to a fairly normal lifestyle. She married a British army officer and
began a family of her own.
For fifty years, Iby Knill hid the reality of her traumatic past from her
loved ones. It wasn’t until 2010 that Iby began telling people like us her
incredible tale. In the last 5 years Iby has given talks to over 32,000 people,
including students at Honley High. In addition to this, she has written two
autobiographies ‘The Woman Without A Number’ and the sequel ‘The
Woman With Nine Lives’ which tell the events of her life before war and
her life during and after. Furthermore, Iby has filmed a documentary with
BBC to raise awareness of the Holocaust.
We thoroughly enjoyed the few hours we spent with Iby, such an
inspirational person with an incredible story to tell.
National Music for
Youth Festival 2016
Teen Sleep
We are very lucky to have
been chosen to be one of only
five schools to take part in
a unique pilot project ‘Teen Sleep’ with The
Children’s Sleep Charity. We strongly believe
that a good night’s sleep is the key to wellbeing
and our 15 students who are participating in
the project are fully engaged in the process.
The Honley choir, jazz group and brass group members gave their
best performance to date at the National Music for Youth Festival
2016 at the Birmingham Symphony Hall. This is the largest youth
music festival celebrating the UK’s most inspiring young musicians.
This year the theme was space and we started with the voice of
Richard Burton and Eve of War from War of the Worlds followed
by Elton John and David Bowie songs.
The introduction session was fascinating for
both the staff and parents; it was a real privilege
to listen to the students share their stories in
a supportive and safe environment. We look
forward to seeing the impact this project will have
on their
sleep and ultimately their overall health and wellbeing.
The students all got into the spirit of Bowie and had a
fantastic day. The feedback was very positive from the
audience, judges and other groups.

Rotary Technology
(STEM) Tournament
Honley High
School App
Three teams of KS3 and KS4 students took part in
the Rotary Technology Tournament at Huddersfield
Technical College in March.
The My Ed app is now
available for all parents,
carers and students to
access to support them to
feel as much a part of their
child’s education as possible.
With the increased use of
smart phone technology we
want to make best use of it.
Additionally the app supports
our move towards paperless
communication to ensure
important information is
received by parents.
The competition, against other local schools,
involved various engineering based challenges to
develop students’ problem solving abilities and to
promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering
and Mathematics). Congratulations to our Year 8
STEM club team; Samuel Lockwood, Samuel Lynn,
Thomas Oddy and Lewis Watson, who won the
Foundation Team Gold Award and to our Year 9
team; Niamh Everson, Iona Fairlie, Arley Stuffins and
Sam Winterburn who won also won a Foundation
Team Gold Award for their portfolio and to our Year
10 team; Timeo Pochin, Ben Turner and Jake Turton
for winning the Intermediate Gold Award.

Sports Leaders
Following a rigorous round of interviews our new Head Boy, Head Girl, Deputy
Head Boy, Deputy Head Girl and Team of Prefects have been chosen.
The West Yorkshire Step into Sport Conference
provided the springboard for 17 Year 9 students to
become young Sports Leaders.
They will play an important role in the school over the next year acting as positive
role models and being actively involved with various events and assignments.
At the conference, Ben Pipes the Olympic
Volleyball player gave a motivational speech
and met the young leaders who have developed
their skills in leading sporting activities. They can
now adapt sessions to meet the needs of the
group they are working with and understand the
qualities that are required of a leader.

Bronze Crest Award
STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Maths)
KS3 students who attend STEM club after school have over the last 5 months been
working on their Bronze Crest Award which is run by the British Science Association.
The Crest Awards are a UK award scheme for 11-19 year olds. Recognising
success, building skills and demonstrating personal achievement in science,
technology, engineering and maths (STEM) project work.
The students had the choice of two project topics which they had to design, test
and write up.
• Health and Hygienes – Medicines. Find out which antacids work the quickest
to neutralise the acid.
• Life at the edge - All at Sea. Investigate and compare the waterproof and
breathability properties of a range of fabrics used in wet weather clothing
designed for sailing. The fabric samples were kindly donated by Berghaus.
As can happen with Science one team concluded Rennie is the best antacid and
the other team Sainsbury’s own brand.

FMSP
Maths Feast
Well done to our team of mathematicians who, in March, took part
in the Further Mathematics Support Programme (FMSP) Maths
Feast hosted by King James’s School.
King James were very welcoming and the co-ordination of the event
was excellent. This was a very challenging team competition testing
mathematical (A-level standard!), team-working and communication
skills. Our team worked incredibly hard and won an award for teamworking. Congratulations to Toby Brewin, Kieran Cucksey, Connor
Lockwood –Jackson, Shanesia McKean, Alex McLeod, Maisy Walland,
Emmie-Richmond-Wood and Elizabeth Woodhead.

Fashion Show Update
Thank you to all our super models who did a wonderful job of modelling
up to 8 outfits each in front of a packed hall. No easy task! Initially a
couple of the models looked, understandably, a little apprehensive,
however after one or two turns on the catwalk they all looked as though
they had been in the fashion industry for years.
The evening was a fantastic success and Friends of Honley
High School raised over £500!
It was a brilliant evening and it was great to see everyone enjoying
themselves outside of school. Thank you to Friends of Honley High
School, Heather from ChainReaxtion and of course our superb models.
Year 6 and 7 Interschool
Maths Competition
We were delighted to once again run the annual Year 6 and
7 Interschool Maths Competition between our local feeder
schools. Students took part in the highly challenging and
competitive event which combined maths, communication
and teamwork skills. Congratulations to the Year 6 winners,
South Crosland Moor B team and the Year 7 winners, Batley
Grammar B team who pipped the Honley team to the post by
just 1 point. Thank you to all who took part and for the staff
who supported the event.

Hannah
gains top
award
Athletics success
for Aran
Aran Thomas’s Athletics success goes from strength to strength. After a very
successful indoor season where he won the junior boys British Indoor Shot title,
Aran surpassed his previous triumph last year at the Yorkshire Track and Field
Championships by winning all five events he entered. He now holds the shot,
discus, hammer, pole vault and javelin titles. A tremendous achievement.
Aran’s sights are set on the 2016 English schools Championships in
Gateshead and the England Athletics British Championships in Bedford in
July. We wish him good luck.

Well done to our Racquets superstar Hannah
Boden,Year 11. At the Pride of Huddersfield
Community Awards in May she was voted
Sports Personality of the Year. This is richly
deserved after all of her hard work this
year with both Badminton success as the
Under 15 National Champion and reaching
the quarter finals of the Seniors National
Tournament. Hannah has recently retained
her British Open Age racketlon title, the first
female to do so since the competition began.
She now goes on to compete in the World
Rackleton Championship in Denmark over the
summer alongside her brother Piers an ex
student of Honley who is currently studying at
Huddersfield New College.
We wish her good luck and will continue to
follow her progress in the future.
Charisma
competes at
international level
Charisma Khawaja, Year 10, has finished off a successful year with
an excellent performance with team GB in the 6th International WTF
G1 Taekwondo Tournament, held in Thessaloniki, Greece.
Following a tough competition Charisma won a bronze
medal, a superb achievement for a young athlete going
from strength to strength.
Further cycling
success for Laura
Year 9 student Laura Ibbotson continues
with her success in Cycling competitions.
Laura came 2nd in the Under 15 National Race
while still 13 years old. This goes alongside her 1st
place win in the Under 15 British Schools Cycling
Association (BSCA) Yorkshire Circuit Championship
a couple of months ago, making her also the BSCA
Yorkshire Circuit Champion. This is the second
year in a row that Laura holds the BSCA Yorkshire
Circuit Championship.
