COMMUNIST PARTY OF AUSTRALIA COLLECTION - PHOTOGRAPHS
(Part of Accession No. 91 152)
INTRODUCTION:
The Communist Party of Australia formed in 1920. During the 1930's Depression its membership
increased as people sought alternatives to industrial capitalism. It reached the peak of its influence postWorld War II, when its membership was at its largest, and a number of its members held many trade union
positions. Several prominent academics also held membership. During World War II the Party was made
illegal due to its allegiance to the USSR, becoming legal again when the USSR joined the Allies. In 1949
the Menzies Government conducted a Royal Commission into the CPA, and in 1950 its National
Referendum to outlaw the CPA was defeated. In 1963 the Party split over the Sino-Soviet issue, and a
splinter CPA (Marxist-Leninist) was formed. In 1970 and 1984 there were other ideological splits, all of
which weakened the Party, which disbanded in 1989.
THE ARRANGEMENT OF THE PHOTOGRAPH COLLECTION:
The final accession of CPA Victorian State Committee records came to the University of Melbourne
Archives in 1991 following the demise of the Party. Some of the photographs listed here were among
these records, but the bulk came at the same time from Mrs. Alvie Booth, who was then sorting the
Victorian CPA records and held many of the photographs at her home. Most of the photographs were
unidentified. At Mrs. Booth's request, the photographs have been processed and arranged by Mr. John
Ellis. Two meetings were held which ex-CPA members attended, and helped to identify photographs.
The photos were originally sorted into 17 categories by John Ellis and adjustments were made by others.
These categories overlap, but have been retained and an index created for ease of identification.

Demonstration at Melbourne Herald, March 5, 1959 by wharfies and seamen.
The Herald had been critical of the maritime unions for some weeks and had,
according to the unions, gone too far. About 50-60 protesters invaded the
composing room at a critical time, just 15 minutes before the final edition of
the paper and spoke to compositors and linotype operators (of which I was
one) about their grievances. This not only disrupted the production of the
edition, but their spokespeople jumped up on trolleys holding pages of the
edition and damaged some type which had to be replaced. While all hell was
breaking loose in the comp room, union delegates insisted on talking to the
managing director of The Herald and Weekly Times Ltd., John Williams (later
Sir John) and demanded a right of reply in the next day's edition. If this
demand was not met an immediate black ban would be placed on the supply of
newsprint coming from Burnie, Tasmania to all Herald papers. Minutes before
the edition was due to go to press management agreed to the demands. It was
the quickest resolution of a union-management conflict I have ever witnessed!
