Choral Series
Choral at Cadogan returns for the 2014-15 season with seven concerts featuring leading choirs from
September 2014 to May 2015. The series opens with a concert from the BBC Singers and conductor
Andrew Carwood on 30 September 2014. The English consort song, in which voices and viols
intertwine, was at its zenith in the works of William Byrd and Orlando Gibbons, and in this concert
the viol consort Fretwork joins the BBC Singers to perform works by these two composers from the
late Tudor and early Jacobean era. The programme is completed by two major works from living
composers: Thea Musgrave’s Winter Words sets powerfully emotional poems about man’s
inhumanity to man, and Nico Muhly’s My Days takes words from Psalm 39, echoing a setting of the
same text by Gibbons.
On 23 October 2014 The Tallis Scholars and director Peter Phillips return to Choral at Cadogan for
the first of its two concerts this series with a programme that demonstrates how composers from
three separate traditions interpreted the same texts: Catholic, Anglican and Russian Orthodox. This
concert features Renaissance composers Palestrina, Gibbons, Sheppard, Mouton, Chant and Josquin,
all from the Catholic and Anglican tradition alongside orthodox 20th and 21st century composers Arvo
Pärt, Tavener and Stravinsky.
James O’Donnell conducts the world renowned Choir of Westminster Abbey for an evening of
varied Christmas music on 11 December 2014 in a rare London performance away from the Abbey.
The centrepiece of the programme is Poulenc’s set of miniatures depicting scenes from the Nativity
story: Quatre motets pour le temps de Noël. The programme also includes work from Tavener,
Sheppard, Head, Gardner, Robert Chilcott and Bull, Renaissance masterpieces by Byrd, Gibbons and
Tallis and contemporary carols by Matthew Martin and John Rutter. The choir is accompanied by
organist Daniel Cook.
PRESS RELEASE
On 5 February 2015 Andrew Carwood returns to direct English Renaissance vocal group The
Cardinall’s Musick for an evening of The Psalms of David. This programme includes Allegri’s famous
Miserere (Psalm 51) and other double-choir pieces by Victoria, works by Palestrina, Tomkins and
English composers Gibbons, Byrd and Weelkes.
Gothic Voices present a celebration of the biblical matriarch Mary in her various guises - caring
mother, virgin lover, guiding light on 4 March 2015. The concert includes music by medieval
composers including Dunstaple, Shert and Godric of Finchale and contemporary settings by Joanne
Metcalf, Andrew Smith and Arvo Pärt.
On 26 April 2015, Josep Vila i Casañas directs Orfeó Català, one of Spain’s most historic choirs, for
an evening celebrating Catalan music. Formed in 1891, the choir’s main purpose was to disseminate
the Catalan and international choral repertoire and was also the driving force behind the
construction of the Palau de la Música Catalana concert hall, a symbol of huge power in Catalan
culture. Pianist Albert Guinovart and organist Juan de la Rubia accompany the choir. The
centrepiece of this Catalan programme is the Cant de les Estrelles (Song of the Stars), a work by Enric
Granados which had been lost for decades and was recently re-discovered. The programme also
features the works of composers Pau Casals, Toldrà, Montsalvatge, Reig, Sors, Morera, with pianist
Albert Guinovart and director Josep Vila i Casañas, all illustrating the legacy of this territory.
For the final concert in the Choral series The Tallis Scholars and director Peter Phillips return to
Cadogan Hall for Tintinnabuli on 14 May 2015. This concert explores the relationship and similarities
between the work of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, who celebrates his 80th birthday in 2015, and the
work of Tudor composer John Sheppard, for which 2015 marks the 500th anniversary of his birth.
The programme is completed by works from English composer Tallis.
Chamber Orchestra Series
The Chamber Orchestra concert series returns for its second season at Cadogan Hall with seven
leading chamber orchestras. At the heart at the series is the Academy of St Martins in the Fields and
London Chamber Orchestra with four concerts each across the series.
For the opening concert on 7 October 2014, the Academy is directed by Music Director Joshua Bell.
The programme includes Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides, Op. 26 ‘Fingal’s Cave’ and Violin Concerto in E
minor Op.64 and Schubert’s String Quartet No. 14, D180 ‘Death and the Maiden’. On 9 March 2015
pianist Jeremy Denk makes his debut with the ASMF performing two Bach Piano Concertos: No.2 in
E major and No. 4 in A major. On 19 April 2015 the Academy is joined by regular guest artist Julia
Fischer who directs an evening of string music including Haydn’s Violin Concerto in G major, ,
Schöenberg’s Verklärte Nacht and Mendelssohn’s Concerto for violin and piano in D minor, with
pianist Oliver Schnyder. The Chamber Orchestra Series concludes on 23 July 2015 with Joshua Bell
returning to direct the Academy in a programme including Piazzolla’s Four Seasons of Buenos Aires
and one of the Academy’s most loved pieces, Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings.
The London Chamber Orchestra also presents four programmes this series. On 8 October 2014, with
conductor Christopher Warren-Green the LCO is joined by pianist Ingolf Wunder to perform Kilar’s
Orawa, Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8. On 3 December 2014 the LCO
is conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy for a concert featuring Sibelius’ Rakastava and Shostakovich’s
Two Pieces for String Octet and Chamber Symphony. Cellist Alexey Stadler joins the orchestra for a
performance of Elgar’s Cello Concerto. In 2015, the orchestra returns on 15 January with conductor
