5. What is a population's Dependency Load?
Dependency load refers to the part of the population that is not in the workforce, usually those under the age of 16 and over 65. b) Describe why this would be a useful concept for a government planner
The government needs to plan for such things as schools, pensions, immigration levels, oldage homes, and healthcare facilities
the president of a major bank
People of different age groups have different financial needs. A bank president must be able to anticipate the need for special types of savings plans (educational vs. retirement) as well as loans.
c) Consider the ages used in determining the dependency load. For a developed country such as Canada, do they accurately describe the dependent population? Why or why not?
The age range, which is used for all countries in the world and was established many years ago, does not accurately describe the dependent population of Canada. Many Canadians retire before 65 and are not dependent on society. Very few young Canadians start working fulltime by the age of 16. Many will need full or partial support from their parents. 6. What role does immigration play in Canada's population?
Canada is a desirable destination for immigrants from all over the world, so there is no shortage of people who want to come to Canada.
b) How does this compare to most of the world's countries?
Few other countries have a tradition of accepting as many immigrants as Canada, along with a successful record of integrating immigrants.

7. Your parents ma be part of the baby boom. Brainstorm why this generation has had such an enormous influence on Canada's society since the 1950s.
The influence is a result of the large size of the group. At each stage of their lives, society has concentrated on meeting the particular needs of the baby boom generation. For example, in the 1950s and 1960s, many elementary and secondary schools were built to meet their needs.
b) Is this influence likely to continue?
Yes. As the baby boom generation ages, it continues to affect such things as the housing market, recreational activities, healthrelated industries, and the political agenda of the country.
c) What effect has the baby boom had on your generation? How ill this effect your generation in the future?
• It has reduced the opportunity for advancement in the labour force for younger workers. • The baby boom dominates the political agenda in Canada.
• By approx. 2020 a very large number of senior citizens will have to be cared for through health care and pension payments.
