Villa Sandi
We have long established relationships with many of our suppliers, many of whom are smaller, family
owned and quality led. The Villa Sandi estate Vigna La Rivetta lies in the heart of the 1068 hectares of the
Cartizze area, between the hamlets of Santo Stefano and San Pietro di Barbozza, in the municipality of
Valdobbiadene.
A sparkling jewel protected by the hills of the Marca Trevigiana, Villa Sandi is a Palladian style masterpiece
dating back to 1622, and it is also the main office of the company. The Villa rises from a fertile countryside
in which fields and farms, nowadays as well as in the past, pay homage to the local history. A vibrant
stage in which nature and architecture live in total harmony together; place of delight and headquarters,
the complex of Villa Sandi is an enchanting estate where man and environment are in perfect symbiosis.
The entrance is an elegant alley sided by statues of the popular Venetian sculptor Orazio Marinali, whose
works decorate also the gable and the backyard. The Villa, cultural heritage of the Trevisan land, is situated
between the D.O.C.G. area of the Prosécco of Valdobbiadene and the D.O.C. area of the Montello and
Piave wines.

Pazo de Señorans
Producer of Albariño Señorans Riás Baixas - at Pazo de Señorans we are taken back in time. Now
converted into a winery, the Manor House is a magnificient example of those ancestral Galician houses
(XVI century) built in the countryside with all the charm and history of days gone by. The Pazo and the
winery owned originally by husband and wife team Marisol Bueno and Javier Mareque but now in the
hands of their four sons and daughters, Marisol, Vicky, Javier and Santiago, began its wine-producing career
in 1989, although the estate had been growing wine grapes previously. The origin of the name Pazo de
Señoráns is unknown - whether it was the locality that gave the Pazo its name or the Pazo that gave its
name to the site is a mystery!

Albariño
Albariño is a grape variety from the Northern end of the Iberian Peninsula, more specifically the Riás Baixas
region in Spain. The area is often known as ‘Green Spain’ as they have much rainfall compared to the rest
of Spain and it looks similar to parts of the UK. They do however have about 2000 hours of sunshine
each year which makes it a perfect wine growing area producing plump white wines with peach, citrus and
mineral characters that pair perfectly with the local seafood.
The variety is high in acidity, and can be produced as a light white wine or in a fuller style, with oak or lees
ageing adding to the texture and richness. A marine characteristic from the nearby Atlantic Ocean is often
discernible, sometimes manifesting itself as a slight salinity, which makes Albariño a perfect food wine.

Domaine Philippe Testut
In 1998, Cyril Testut took over the family Domaine, established by his father Philippe Testut in 1967.
The Domaine and vineyards are located in the historic heart of the vineyards traditionally defined by the
Cistercian monks. The highly developed root system of vines from Testut Domaine a draw deep mineral
and iodine richness from the soil, which has led to the great reputation of this Chablis wine.

Chardonnay
Chardonnay is arguably the ‘King of White Wine Grapes’ and one of the most widely planted across the
world as it is suited to a wide variety of soils & climates. It excels in terroir with high limestone content as
found in Champagne & Chablis.
Burgundy remains its spiritual home, unquestionably producing some of the finest dry white wines in the
world, though the New World is making major ‘in-roads’ and closing the gap each year. The popularity of
Chardonnay has once again rocketed and this is because we understand the many styles it is available in
from the steely dry Chablis to the rich buttery oaked Chardonnays from the New World.

Cortese Di Gavi
Cortese Di Gavi or simply Gavi, is an Italian dry white wine produced in a restricted area of the Province of
Alessandria, Piedmont, close to the Ligurian border.
The name derives from Gavi, the ‘comune’ at the centre of its production zone, and Cortese, the local
variety of grape from which it is exclusively made and whose existence is reported from the 17th century.
The current style of production dates to 1876. Cortese di Gavi made from vines within the comune of
Gavi may be labelled Gavi di Gavi. Gavi is distinguished by its crisp, floral, peachy, aromatic qualities.

Dopff & Irion
Based in the Hansel and Gretel-like village of Riquewihr in the heart of Alsace, this highly respected
producer, dating back to the 16th century is now in the hands of the Cave de Pfaffenheim. Established in
1957 by the growers of the villages of Pfaffenheim and Gueberschwir, this is one of the top co-operatives
in Alsace. There is a very focused and environmentally friendly vineyard regime, all grapes are hand-picked
and a great deal of investment has gone into the winery.
10
Gewürztraminer
Gewürztraminer is an aromatic wine grape variety, used in white wines, and performs best in cooler
climates. It is a variety with a pink to red skin colour, which makes it a white wine grape as opposed to the
blue to black-skinned varieties commonly referred to as red wine grapes. The variety has high natural sugar
and the wines are white and usually off-dry, with a flamboyant bouquet of lychees. Indeed, Gewürztraminer
and lychees share the same aroma compounds. Dry Gewürztraminers may also have aromas of rosés,
passion fruit and floral notes. It is not uncommon to notice some spritz (fine bubbles on the inside of the
glass). A perfect partner to food with a touch of spice.

Grüner Veltliner (Green Veltliner) is the signature grape of Austria, and by far the nation’s most widely
planted wine grape. As Austria battles its way back to stardom on the international wine market, crisp, spicy
Grüner Veltliner has been its flagship wine. The finest expressions of Austrian Grüner come from vineyards
above the Danube River, in Wachau, Kremstal and Kamptal. Classic Grüner Veltliner wines show citrus
aromas of lemon peel and grapefruit complemented by fresh vegetal notes and the variety’s trademark hint
of white pepper.

Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris
Whilst Italy’s Pinot Grigio is now one of the worlds most requested wines, the grape itself originated as a
mutation of Pinot Noir in Alsace France, where it’s called Pinot Gris.
To break it down, the different names reflect different styles, most Italian versions are light bodied &
neutral, with refreshing apple and pears flavours.
Alsace Pinot Gris, formerly called Tokay, offers richer, rounder wines with more body & spicy, honeyed
qualities & apple, pear & peach flavours, both are now grown around the world.

Kuki
New Zealand’s largest wine region in production and area, Marlborough is located at the north-eastern tip
of the South Island. It stretches from the small port town of Picton in the Marlborough Sounds, to the east
coast town of Kaikoura.
The long, straight Wairau Valley has the most extensive plantings of vines and the region currently has
58,300 acres (23,600 hectares) of land planted with grapes in 2010. This young wine region has won
worldwide acclaim for Sauvignon Blanc. Marlborough is one of New Zealand’s sunniest and driest areas.
Plenty of sunshine with cool nights and a long growing season helps to promote the vibrant fruit flavours
for which this region is renowned.
South-east of the Wairau Valley, the Awatere Valley has a cooler, dry climate, producing grapes with
intense fruit flavours and minerality. Both sub-regions have stony, fast-draining, heat-reflective, infertile soils.

Riesling Riesling is a highly aromatic & fruity grape variety. It has been regarded for hundreds of years as the greatest
white wine grape, though our Burgundian friends may beg to differ slightly! Throughout history, Riesling has
been revered for its vibrant personality, pure fruit flavours, astonishing diversity of styles, ability to show
you where it was grown, versatility with food, and its ability to age for decades. There are different styles of
Riesling available from the Australian dry to the more aromatic and vibrant German Rieslings.

Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodriguez
Producer of Basa, Telmo Rodriguez - Telmo started his wine business in 1994 with fellow winemaker Pablo
Eguzkiza under the Company name of Compañia de Vinos de La Granja. Telmo and Pablo’s first offering
was a wine they named Alma (soul), a Garnacha created from old bush vineyards in Navarra. The wine
was a success, but this was to be a journey of exploration, so Telmo and Pablo headed south to Rueda.
Here they made the decision to re-name the Company “Compañia de Vinos Telmo Rodriguez”; firstly to
capitalise on Telmo’s reputation in the wine world, and secondly, because Telmo is not only making wine,
he is working closely with local wine makers from many different regions all over Spain to create unique
wines that he can sell under the umbrella of his company.
Pretty much all the vineyards at the time his company was starting up were being plowed with foreign
grape varieties. Wine growing land was largely manipulated to grow major international and recognisable
grape varieties. Telmo’s mission was to buck the trend and not only work with native grape varieties, but
also breathe life back into abandoned or forgotten vineyards.
18
Sauvignon Blanc
Sauvignon Blanc is a green skinned grape variety that originates from the Bordeaux region of France, and
most likely gets its name from the French words ‘sauvage’ and Blanc…wild & white! In these modern times
we automatically think of ‘Marlborough’ Sauvignon Blanc, its popularity having soared over the last two
decades since David Hohnen from Cloudy Bay dropped this new amazing zesty wine on us, and it had a
screw top!
We can however, never forget the Loire & its iconic Sancerre & Pouilly-Fumé and the now very popular
zesty wines from Chile offering great value for money. Sauvignon Blanc drinks well on its own, or pair it
with tomato-based sauces and foods with high acidity like salads.

Marilyn Lasserre
Producer of Viognier, Les Argelières - Marilyn is a genuine pioneer. Since her return to France in 2008,
she has significantly contributed to the renewed success of Languedoc’s wines. Bringing her feminine
touch to traditionally strong, rustic and full-bodied wines, Marilyn succeeded in improving quality and taste
with a rigorous selection in the vineyards and perfect control of the winemaking process. Marylin studied
Viticulture and Oenology in Bordeaux, and has spent time working in various regions throughout the world.
Les Argelières is a tribute to the “Terroir” from which these wines are produced, a terroir mostly made of
pebble and limestone perfectly exposed to the sun. It enhances the fruit aromas as well as the mineral style
of the white wines, whilst giving the reds a vibrant fruit character.
The Pays d’Oc has a history of over 2600 years of vine-growing and winemaking. Over the centuries,
the wine trade became more and more structured and grew rapidly. The region greatly benefits from
the Mediterranean climate, bringing warm mist, and the Black Mountain which offers limestone and clay
“terroirs” with cool temperatures.
20
Viognier
Viognier is the only permitted grape for the French wine Condrieu in the Rhône Valley. Outside of the
Rhône, Viognier can be found in regions of North and South America as well as Australia and New
Zealand. In some wine regions, the variety is co-fermented with the red wine grape Syrah where it can
contribute to the colour and bouquet of the wine.
Viognier, which is quickly increasing in its popularity has the potential to produce full-bodied wines with a
lush, soft character.

Turi
Turi is produced from grapes grown in vineyards located on the Coastal Mountain Range, 14km from the
shores of the Pacific Ocean, 25km south west from Casablanca and 95 km west of Santiago. This is very
representative of the dry farming of the West Coast Mountain Range. In 1997, after evaluating the potential
conditions of the area, important investment was made to bring water from the Maipo River through an
8km pipeline. At the present time Viña Leyda has 80 hectares of grapes under cultivation in the Valley.
26
Cabernet Sauvignon
Cabernet Sauvignon is the progeny of Cabernet Franc & Sauvignon Blanc, and is the world’s most famous
red wine grape. It is also the most planted of any colour. Its great distinction of the wine it produces is that
it has a very recognisable aroma of blackcurrants wherever it’s grown in the world. If matured in newish
oak, it can smell of cedar, cigar box, dark chocolate & even tobacco.
Cabernet Sauvignon grapes have a thick skin which translates to the wine and can become tannic,
particularly in younger wines from Bordeaux. The tannins leave a dry taste which makes it a perfect wine
with red meats and game. Softer Cabernets from Chile are great to drink on their own.

Carmenere Is a grape variety originally planted in the Médoc region of Bordeaux, France, where it was
used to produce deep red wines and occasionally used for blending purposes in the same manner as Petit
Verdot. Today however, we are drinking some fantastic Carmenere from Chile where the Terroir seems to
be the perfect fit for this lesser-known wine. Some say it sits between the Cabernet and the Merlot. Either
way, it is rich and packed with ripe black and red fruit with a touch of savoury earthiness.

to create Mendel’s remarkable wines.

Gamay
Gamay is a light bodied red wine that’s similar in taste to Pinot Noir, growing primarily next to Burgundy
in a region called Beaujolais. Gamay wines are loved for their delicate floral aromas, subtle earthy notes and
a surprising ability to pair with many foods, even fish.
Best served in a large globe shaped Burgundy glass to collect all the stunning fruity and flowery aromas,
expect to smell fresh cut violets, raspberries, cherries and plums.

Malbec Malbec was originally a grape associated with south west France, better known then as ‘Cot’, it was widely
grown there until the severe winter of 1956 wiped out the majority of the vines, and more glamourous
alternatives were planted, though it is still grown successfully to this day in Cahors.
It has found its spiritual home now in Mendoza, Argentina, producing deep coloured wines with generous
black fruit characteristics, balanced acidity and smooth tannins. If a good steak is on your mind, pair it with
Malbec for a taste sensation.

Irvine Wines
From the very beginning, the Irvine family has been distinguished as the Merlot Masters, a title rewarded
with international awards vintage after vintage. Jim Irvine, Merlot Master and his daughter Joanne (winner
of International Red wine Maker of the year 2006 at the International Wine Challenge) have created this
outstanding range of wines. This has been achieved through their passion and enthusiasm for the industry,
highlighted by the fact that Jim, now in his seventies, still travels around the world each year, sharing with
others the wealth of his wine experience, gained from spending over forty years in the trade. A truly
remarkable man!
The Irvine portfolio provides for every occasion, from the Springhill Merlot for everyday drinking through,
to the outstanding Baroness, a blend inspired by the lasting memory of his first bottle of French Pomerol.
For something a little more unusual, there is the Sparkling Merlot but the real crème de la crème is by far
the Grand Merlot.
30
Merlot
Merlot is a dark blue purple coloured grape variety, used both as a blending grape and also as a straight
single varietal. Known for being soft, ripe and elegant, most Merlots are easy drinking reds, often
recommended to someone new to red wine as the first wine to drink.
Merlot is the most widely planted grape in Bordeaux and a grape that has been on a relentless drive across
the globe over the last couple of decades. In St. Emillon and Pomerol it withstands the moist rich clay soils
far better than Cabernet grapes, at its very best producing opulently rich, plummy Clarets with succulent
fruitcake like characters, the finest being Pétrus, Le Pin and Clinet.

Domaine Machard de Gramont
Producer of Nuits-St-Georges En La Perrière Noblot - Axelle Machard de Gramont took over the
family domaine from her father in 2004. Since then, the quality of the wines and the reputation of the
domaine have increased exponentially from year to year. Axelle was not originally planning to be a
winemaker, and so she is influenced not only by her experience growing up in Burgundy, but also from
a decade living away from the domaine, which gives her the rare perspective of both an insider and
an outsider. Since returning to the Cote d’Or, Axelle has fully and completely embraced the life of the
vigneronne, learning each of her vineyards by heart, and dedicated herself to making exceptional Burgundy.
She converted to thr domaine to organic viticulture, and taking a minimal intervention approach in the
cellar. The result are wines with softer, elegant structure, that retain the rich fruit of the best Pinot Noir
from the Côte de Nuits. The domaine is composed of several village vineyards in Nuits-Saint-Georges
- including the 80 year old vines in Aux Allots near the border with Vosne-Romanée, and Les Terrasses
des Vallerots, which Axelle’s father Bertrand reterraced and planted in 2002 on a plot that had been
abandoned since the late 1800s. In addition, there is a tiny vineyard of Aligoté hidden next to the ruins of
the Abbaye Saint-Vivant, a beautifully scenic spot off the beaten path.
32
Pinot Noir Pinot Noir aside from providing depth, backbone and added complexity is one of the three permitted
grapes in Champagne. Pinot Noir is arguably the most charismatic of all grape varieties and without doubt
the hardest to get right.
When it works though, it’s incomparable. No other grape has the same power of seduction; from its
naturally pale and delicate hue to the charming raspberry and cherry notes it presents in its youth, to the
gamey aromas that appear with age. From the lacey texture of a fine mature Burgundy, or the warmer,
velvety allure it takes on in the cooler climates of the New World, it will guarantee a smile on the face.

The picturesque 160-hectare farm that is today known as Avondale has been under cultivation for more

specifically for the production of wine grapes. Avondale is now home to the Grieves Family and 25 farm
worker families. As the pioneers of Vital Health Foods, South Africa’s leading health food company, the
Grieves have an innate focus on well-being that encompasses the land and its community of people.

to enjoy healthy, balanced lives.

Pinotage
Pinotage is a red South African grape variety developed by Professor A. Perold in 1924 as a cross between
Cinsault and Pinot Noir, only to be largely ignored for the next fifty years!
The revival began in the 1980’s, Pinotage producing a plethora of styles according to the growing
conditions, vineyard management and wine making, with an assortment of plum, cherry, blackberry and
even the odd hint of banana. It also takes very well to some oak.

Sangiovese
Sangiovese is Italy’s most widely planted red grape variety. Its home is Tuscany and the name literally
translates as ‘blood of Jove’, referring to the Roman god Jupiter. Throughout Italy it is known under a
variety of names including Brunello di Montalcino, Morellino and of course Chianti, which Hannibal Lector
gave some adverse publicity a few years ago along with a plate of fava beans!
Bin
Both high yielding and late ripening, it was until the early 1980’s blighted by massive over cropping,
however the quality of Sangiovese has rocketed upwards since then, and they are now some of the world’s
most sought after wines.

Longboard Vineyards
Longboard was born from the passion of Oded Shakked, surfer first, winemaker later, who brings a unique
perspective to winemaking, or rather winegrowing as he prefers to call it. Longboard believes that great
tasting wines are those that are true to the people and place that grew them. Thus, they extend the notion
of “terroir” to include the human aspect, not just the soils, climate and weather.
36
Shiraz & Syrah
Let’s clear something up right away, they are both exactly the same wine! When Syrah (Sih-rah ) arrived in
Australia from its natural home in France, for some reason the Aussie winemakers took to calling it Shiraz
(Shi-RAZ ) instead of its original name, we will never find out the exact reason so maybe we put it down
to ‘lost in translation’ and move on.
It is considered to be one of the great noble black grape varieties, due to its ability to produce dark, full
bodied, age worthy wines. Often hearty in weight and texture with ripe black fruit spicy pepper and dark
chocolate.

Rioja Vega
Initially started as the dream of one man, Don Felipe Ugalde in 1882, this winery has seen ongoing growth
and development over the years. Don’s aim was simple, to be one of the country’s most prestigious
Bodegas. Although his winery passed down the family line, it was through marriage that it became united
with Bodegas Muerza, hence losing its identity.
Today it is owned by the group Principe de Viana who acquired it in 1983 providing investment in new
equipment, staff and in 2001 a new winery, 10km outside Logroño, complete with an underground ageing
cellar. The new cellars incorporated modern equipment such as self-weighing hoppers, pneumatic presses
and self-emptying stainless steel vats. This level of development has allowed not only the fruit from their
own vineyards to be processed but also that of surrounding contract growers so that it has been able to
produce this range of great value for money wines.
38
Tempranillo Tempranillo is best known as the dominant red grape of Rioja, Spain’s most famous wine.
Until the 1990’s many Rioja’s tasted more of oak than grape, aged for years in small, vanilla scented
American oak barrels, disguising Tempranillo’s own unique flavours.
The Bodegas then began to age their wines for much shorter periods in French oak, and also to export
young (Joven) unoaked wines, allowing a wider market to enjoy the essence of this fine grape.
Tastes include cherries and subtle leather and vanilla tones, the finish is mild, smooth and lingers with
tannins on both sides of your mouth. Spanish wines are once again in the headlines for all the right reasons.

Don & Sons
Producer of Zinfandel, Smokin’ Loon - Born and raised in Spain by a Spanish mother and a Puerto Rican
father who loved the outdoors and food and wine, Gloria was destined to spend time in vineyards and
wineries.
Gloria brings a wealth of experience to her role as winemaker for Don Sebastiani & Sons, as she has spent
the last fifteen years working up the winery ladder. She first worked as research enologist at Beringer
Vineyards, where she learned all about winemaking and viticulture. She then served as director of enology
at Domaine Chandon before becoming assistant winemaker. Over the next seven years, she spent time
working in both sparkling and still wine programs at Domaine Chandon and its sister winery, Newton
Vineyard. In 2007, Gloria returned to Beringer Vineyards, where she worked as the assistant winemaker
before accepting that role at Jackson Family Wines. As assistant winemaker, Gloria handled all aspects of
the winemaking process from grape to bottle, and coordinated the blending and processing of forty-one
different labels across twelve different brands.

Zinfandel & Primitivo
Zinfandel also known as Primitivo, is a variety of black-skinned grapes grown in over 10 percent of the
vineyards of California. DNA analysis has revealed that it is genetically equivalent to the Primitivo variety
traditionally grown in Apulia in the “heel” of Italy, where it was introduced in the 18th century. The grape
found its way to the United States in the mid-19th century, where it became known by variations of the
name “Zinfandel”, a name which is probably of Austrian origin. The grapes typically produce a robust red
wine and due to the hot climate in California, often produces wines with a high ABV of around 15%
The taste depends on the ripeness of the grapes from which it is made. Red fruit flavours like dark cherry
and raspberry dominate in wines from cooler areas, whereas blackberry, anise and pepper notes are more
common in wines made in warmer areas and in wines made from the earlier-ripening Primitivo clone.

Porto Poças
In 1918, a few months before the Armistice, Manoel Domingues Pocas Júnior, who had been born in the
heart of the Port Wine hustle and bustle, decided to establish his own company. Manoel Pocas was 30
years old and he had some experience in this business. With his uncle, he created a company to sell grape
spirits to large Port Wine shippers. Soon afterwards he opened a head office in Vila Nova de Gaia, where
they remain to this day. Today, with three quintas in the best winemaking areas of the Douro Demarcated
Region, Pocas ensures its total control over the quality of its wines and the family is more involved than
ever before.
44
Port
Port is not only for Christmas. Also known as Vinho do Porto, Porto and usually simply Port it is a
Portuguese fortified wine produced exclusively in the Douro Valley in the northern provinces of Portugal.
It is typically a sweet, red wine, often served as a dessert wine or with cheese, though it also comes in dry,
semi-dry, and white varieties.
Tawny Port is aged in wooden casks and takes on an almost oxidized characteristic, is not such a deep
colour and is a smoother, less sweet wine which may have been aged in wood for 20 years. Ruby Port
is deep red in colour, slightly sweeter and has much less oak-ageing and spends more time ageing in the
bottle.

Fired by a passion for Champagne, a respect for traditional values and, most importantly, for people,
Bernard de Nonancourt inspired Laurent-Perrier with his independent spirit and creative audacity. He
established privileged working relationships with the grape growers and cleverly combined innovation and
tradition. He created the signature Laurent-Perrier style of freshness, lightness and elegance and developed
a unique range of champagnes which are today exported to more than 160 countries worldwide.
46
Champagne
Champagne is a sparkling wine produced from grapes grown in the Champagne region of France.
Following rules that demand, among other things, secondary fermentation of the wine in the bottle to
create carbonation, specific vineyard practices, sourcing of grapes exclusively from specific parcels in the
Champagne appellation and specific pressing regimes unique to the region. Some use the term Champagne
as a generic term for sparkling wine, but in most countries, it is illegal to officially label any product
Champagne unless it both comes from the Champagne region and is produced under the rules of the
appellation.
The primary grapes used in the production of Champagne are black Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier but
also white Chardonnay. Royalty became associated with Champagne in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.
The leading manufacturers made efforts to associate their Champagnes with nobility and royalty through
advertising and packaging, which led to popularity among the emerging middle class.
