Volume 18 | Number 1 | January 2014 iPad Program Page 1-2 Sarah Ezzell Page 3 Home Sweet Home Page 6-7 School news, information and events Dear Friends of Fairhill, iPad Program I began this school year celebrating my 50th First Day of School! I have been a student, a teacher and a principal, with most of those years spent at Fairhill. Jane Sego served as my mentor and it is a privilege to follow in her footsteps. Because of her steadfast leadership, the school is well prepared for the future and is positioned for continued growth. My 50th year begins a new journey that will surely include new challenges and experiences. It is an opportunity that I relish because I believe that Fairhill offers a unique experience for students with learning differences and I am proud to be a part of that experience. As we blast into the spring semester, we are excited to officially launch the iPad program in grades 8-12. While several students and teachers have been working with their iPads since August, the program became required for everyone on January 7th and has been well received and supported. Here are just a few things some of our classes have been doing: Providing programs and learning opportunities that reach our learning different students in new and innovative ways is always our goal. Technology continues to be an important avenue for ground-breaking teaching and learning. A very talented group of Upper School teachers are planning to utilize individual iPads in the classroom allowing students to access information and create assignments. In addition, we have added an accomplished group of teachers to an already outstanding faculty. And for the first time in our history, Fairhill joined other high schools in Texas as we experienced “Friday night lights” with our own Fairhill Falcon football team and cheer squad. It is truly an exciting time in the life of Fairhill School! Education is a team effort. Our team consists of talented teachers, committed parents, eager students and a host of other significant support players. Our success is dependent upon working together to achieve our goal of providing the very best education possible for our students. I am confident that by combining our efforts and our talents that the result will be extraordinary. We are grateful to each of you for your personal commitment as you join our Fairhill team. Carla Stanford Executive Director In Spanish levels 1-5, the students are using their iPads to do Rosetta Stone and the language learning program, Duolingo. The iPad has enabled users to log into the school’s Rosetta Stone and Duolingo accounts and work on the programs from home or anywhere they have Internet access. Spanish students also keep up with assignments and receive reminders and updates on the iPad Edmodo app. Their favorite feature in Edmodo is responding to the frequent opinion polls the teacher posts in Spanish. Voting for things like their favorite sports team or holiday food sparks responses, posts, and dialogue (in Spanish, of course). Warm up spiral notebooks are being replaced as students now do their daily translation sentences on the iPad. Typing in Spanish on the iPad is possible and easy since a Spanish keyboard is already loaded on the tablet. Once they access that keyboard, all those nifty accent marks, tildes (as in Ñ), and upside-down punctuation marks are right at their fingertips. The iPad in Spanish class is ¡Increíble! ¡Maravilloso! ¡Fantástico! 8th and 9th grade science classes are using iPads to take notes and complete daily assignments such as vocabulary worksheets, science skill worksheets, and labs through apps like Notability and Edmodo. Classes also access apps that provide diagrams and Fairhill School and Diagnostic Assessment Center | 16150 Preston Road | Dallas, Texas 75248 | Phone 972.233.1026 | Fax 972.233.8205 | www.fairhill.org iPad Program continued… demonstrations about how a specific component of a system works, allowing students to connect the pieces with the overall function of a system. Other apps in use help create vocabulary flash cards, highlight pertinent material, and simulate dissections utilizing virtual dissection labs. 11th grade American literature and 12th grade British literature classes also complete daily assignments such as vocabulary charts and literature responses through Notability and Edmodo. Classes use specially designed apps from Gatsby’s Light Publications that provide information about various literary periods, allowing students to connect the art, history, and music of each period with critical analyses of major works. Some of the other apps we’re using help students create bibliographies and works cited documentation for essays, provide access to literary element graphs that encourage visualization of how writers develop style and meaning, and introduce organization tools for brainstorming ideas. Many students are even writing entire essays on the iPads! Golfers were greeted by tourney committee members and enjoyed a delicious box lunch before play. After the completion of the tournament, desserts were served during the exciting Awards Ceremony. Profits from the tournament will be used to enhance the Fairhill technology program. Seventh grader Phillip Bennett and his family won 2nd Place in the 14th Annual Golf Tournament. One of the apps for use in the 8th grade English class, iAnnotate, gives students tools to edit and revise their essays. This app gives them access to different colors and tools to self evaluate in a way they haven’t been able to do with colored pencils. Using Quizlet gives students a study tool for creating flash cards to help with vocabulary. The writing portfolios are becoming electronic, and Edmodo allows the 9th-10th grade honors literature class to discuss the reading outside of school, enabling a richer discussion during class. Government classes are using CaseFiles, an app that includes documents from Supreme Court cases, providing instant access and immediate discussion about various legal topics. Additionally, iBrainstorm enables the Journalism class to work together virtually. Students can share layout and graphic ideas at the moment of conception, encouraging instant feedback and enriching teamwork. Seventh grader Mark Murfee stopped for a photo with his mom and dad after winning the Putting Contest for 13 to 18 year old students. The Fairhill Falcon congratulated fifth grader Evan Bailey after he won the Putting Contest for 5 to 12 year old students. Some of the math classes are using apps for different kinds of calculations, while also using Notability for note taking, organization of assignments, and completing work in class. Teachers can now turn worksheets and pages from textbooks into PDF files, upload them to Edmodo, and provide students with materials electronically, thereby eliminating the need for different source materials and multiple-sheet packets. We are very excited about the growth that the iPads are providing our students and look forward to a reciprocal process of learning through and with technology as the semester progresses! 14th Annual Fairhill Golf Tournament Raises Over $18,000 On October 26th, Fairhill families and friends gathered at Ridgeview Ranch Golf Club for the 14th Annual Golf Classic. Co-chairs of the very successful event were Tisha and Mark Copeland, parents of 10th grader Catherine Copeland. The tournament committee worked diligently with the Copeland’s to orchestrate this event. Cooper Nichols, second from left, stopped for a “photo op” with his family after winning the Longest Drive for Lower School students. Fairhill Diagnostic Assessment Center The Diagnostic Assessment Center at Fairhill offers families a range of testing options, from full psychoeducational assessments to more individualized, targeted evaluations. Psychoeducational assessments provide parents and teachers with a detailed profile of a student’s cognitive, language, academic, and behavioral functioning. While this extensive process often leads to identifying a learning difference or attentional disorder, such evaluations also highlight valuable information about the student’s individual strengths and weaknesses. Based on data derived from the assessment, specific recommendations for school and home are generated to give parents and teachers a specific plan of “next” steps to help the student achieve his or her potential. High school students, around their sophomore or junior year, often require retesting to document their learning differences so they can request accommodations on college entrance tests like the ACT and SAT. This information also provides the documentation necessary to apply to the LD programs at the college level. The DAC is open year around and the staff is available to answer any questions parents may have, about previous testing their child has had, or exploring possibilities for future testing. Clinical Psychology Internship at Fairhill Diagnostic Assessment Center Sarah Ezzell is a clinical psychology doctoral student in her third year at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She grew up in Bedford, Texas and completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology and Cognitive Sciences at Rice University in Houston. She is glad to be back in the DFW area! In her free time she enjoys exercising, listening to music, relaxing, being creative, and watching documentaries on Netflix. She loves working with children and adolescents because they are constantly changing and growing in so many ways. In the past 5 years, she has worked in a variety of clinical and research settings focused on the well-being of children and adolescents, including a psychological assessment center, an applied behavior analysis clinic for children with autism, and in psychological services at a juvenile justice center. At Fairhill she will be working with students, parents and teachers under the supervision of Dr. Bill Gordon. This is Ms. Ezzell’s first opportunity working in a school setting and she is excited to see what’s to come in the year ahead at Fairhill! College and Career Readiness at Fairhill! The College and Career Readiness course is designed to prepare 11th grade students for their senior year, as well as academic life beyond high school. Students are exposed to a wide range of lessons and activities that encourage them to explore their strengths, interests, and set realistic goals for the future. Careers and college majors are researched in detail, and video lessons are offered to give students insight into a variety of occupations and professions. The course includes detailed instruction on the steps required for the college application process. Students learn how to prepare and send applications, write entrance essays and résumés, and apply for various forms of financial aid: grants, scholarships, and student loans. Students prepare for SAT and ACT tests with weekly lessons on test-taking strategies. In addition to class lessons, students are asked to extend their learning by completing activities that involve interaction with the community and family members. While the course focuses mostly on college and career preparation, it also takes into consideration alternate career and educational opportunities including trade and vocational schools and the military. how can students prepare for college? Tip #1: Start thinking about goals for college. Get to know your priorities. Tip #2: Practice good study skills every day. Tip #3: Start researching colleges early. Make a list. Tip #4: Try to line up a summer job or internship. Tip #5: Get in some early ACT/SAT practice. Tip #6: Become familiar with the college application and financial aid process. Tip #7: Sit down with a college advisor to discuss your plans and ask for advice. Tip #8: Write down application due dates and keep them in a familiar spot. Tip #9: Try to take advanced courses during your junior and senior year. Tip #10: Visit as many college campuses as possible. Hands-On Learning in Social Studies Social studies is often viewed as a “lesser” subject. It’s less fascinating than science. It’s less important than reading or math. It’s less fun than PE. The truth is that having social studies in the curriculum is extremely valuable for increasing knowledge and academic skills. Lower school teachers at Fairhill keep students engaged with hands-on learning activities rather than the traditional “read the lesson, answer the questions, take the test” format. Students don’t just read about archaeologists and explorers, they become archaeologists and explorers. They create 3D Native American homes, Chinese porcelain, and Civil War scenes based on knowledge they have gained. They write journals. Study skills are incorporated utilizing activities and technology like cut-n-paste graphic organizers (note-taking), Smartboard responder activities (vocabulary building), and drawings (memory techniques). Together they collected stamps from over 100 countries and coins from more than 50 countries. Currently Mr. Komari enjoys listening to music and tinkering with computers. Mr. Komari earned a Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Sciences from Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University. He came to the US to continue his study of Animal Sciences. While working as a Teaching Assistant in college Mr. Komari found that he really enjoyed the teaching aspect of working with students so he changed course and earned his Secondary Education Certification at Texas A&M in Corpus Christi. Mr. Komari’s teaching philosophy is “I believe that all students can perform to their best ability in a nurturing environment that has to be created by both the teacher and the students through ownership of their actions and mutual respect for each other”. Congratulations! Congratulations to Dr. Jan Kirkland. She was awarded a PH. D. in Reading and Literacy Education on October 16, 2013, from Texas Woman’s University. Her dissertation was titled: How Does Drama Instruction Increase the Reading Engagement of Eighth Grade Students with Learning Disabilities? Her minor field of study was Library and Information Studies. Dr. Kirkland was particularly interested in adolescents with learning disabilities who frequently experience difficulty engaging in literacy activities. They risk being hindered by negative attitudes, doubt of personal intellectual ability, reduced effort, lower self-efficacy, and failure. Motivating these adolescents to read critically from an engaged stance is an indispensible requirement of literacy instruction because adolescent readers face increasingly complex material, may risk aliteracy, and live in a world with increasing literacy demands. Dr. Kirkland taught Reading and Literature before becoming the Fairhill librarian. Former Falcons Class of 2013 Stuart Sickler, a spirited Fairhill Falcon, passed away this fall due to complications from a recent heart surgery. Stuart was a great student, the Student Council Historian his senior year and a gifted writer and photographer for the Talon Times. But most of all, Stuart was kind, funny and a friend to all students and staff. With his clever jokes and humorous banter, he was never at a loss for words. Fairhill dedicated their first football game in memory of Stuart. Players were challenged to play as Stuart lived his life – with honor, respect and a zest for life that showed on his smiling face each and every day.
