Cycling to Work
in Melbourne
1976 – 2001
The more we know about the role
of the bicycle in our transport system,
the better bicycle facilities we
can provide for cyclists.
“Cycling to Work in Melbourne 1976-2001” is the most
comprehensive review to date of cycling trips to work
in Melbourne.
This report provides information on:
a) the number of cycling trips to work in Melbourne on
each of the six census days for the period between
1976 and 2001,
b) the numbers of cycling trips to work with origins
and destinations in each Local Government
Area (LGA),
c) the mode share undertaken by people riding
bicycles to work in comparison to other transport
modes, and
d) the proportion of cycling trips to work from within
selected LGA’s or from adjoining LGA’s.
The data used in this review has been obtained from the
Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Census for the six census
years for the period between 1976 and 2001.
With a sample size of more that 1 million people who
travelled to work and over 10,000 cycling trips recorded
on the day of each census, this data represents the
most comprehensive data set for cycling trips to work
in Melbourne.
For further information on the data used for this report
and the way in which it was collected, please refer to

| Cycling to Work in Melbourne 1976 – 2001
Melbourne has undergone significant changes over
the past 25 years. Some of these changes include:
a) an increase in Melbourne’s overall population
from approximately 2.7 million in 1976 to 3.36
million in 2001,
b) a revitalisation of Melbourne’s CBD, with more
people moving into Melbourne’s inner suburbs
and increased urban consolidation,
c) an increase in the total number of trips to work
from approximately 1.0 million in 1976 to 1.3
million in 2001, and
d) the progressive development and expansion of
Melbourne’s bicycle network with the provision
of more bicycle lanes and paths.
These changes are reflected in the way that people ride
bicycles to work. In particular, this report shows that
the City of Melbourne is the major attractor for cycling
trips to work in Melbourne. It also shows that:
a) the number of cycling trips to work to the City
of Melbourne increased from 885 in 1976 to 4,100
in 2001,
b) about 55% of all cycling trips to work to the City
of Melbourne are made from inner city suburbs,
c) the number of cycling trips to work from the City of
Yarra increased from 271 in 1976 to 1,519 in 2001, and
d) a decline in the number of trips made by bicycle
to to areas such as Hobson’s Bay, Monash and
Kingston.

Data Source
Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Census,
1976 to 2001
Weather and daylight hours on the day
of each census.
The data used in this report has been obtained from the
Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Census for the six census
years 1976 to 2001.
Weather and daylight hours can influence a person’s
decision as to whether or not to ride their bicycle to
work. People are less likely to ride their bicycles to work
if it is raining, if it is unusually hot or when it is dark.
As part of each census, people were asked to nominate
the address of their employer and the method(s) that
they used to travel to their work place on the day of
the census.
People’s responses were recorded against the street
address where the census form is collected from to
provide information on the origin and destination of
their journey to work. This information was matched
with the method(s) that the person nominated for
their trip to work.
The data used for this report are where a bicycle was the
only nominated form of transport, unless otherwise noted.
The following table indicates the date of each census,
the weather conditions on the day and sunrise and
sunset times.

The data for this table has been obtained from the Bureau of
Meteorology and Geoscisence Australia.
As indicated in the table, each census was undertaken
on a winter’s day when it was dark up to 7.30 am and
after 5.10 pm. Under these conditions, most people
who ride their bicycles to work would need to ride in
the dark and many would be reluctant to do so.
As a result, it would be reasonable to conclude that there
would be significantly less cycling trips to work as part
of each census as there would between September and
May when the days are longer. For example, sunrise and
sunset in February is typically 6.30 am and 8.30 pm.
The Victorian Activity and Travel Survey for the period
1997 to 1999 indicated that there were up to 30% more
cycling trips undertaken in Autumn than there were
in winter.
