The Success of the NCAC Team:
One of the NCAC therapists shared how the SCAN program had helped her 15-year-old client. The client had received therapy
services a few years ago but is returning for some additional support and therapy. This young woman had been sexually
abused at age nine. She shared that “this program called SCAN” came to her fifth grade class and helped her know that what
had been done to her was sexual abuse. Before SCAN, she did not fully understand that what had happened to her was wrong
and that she had been abused. The SCAN program encouraged her to tell, helping her to understand that the abuse was not
her fault. She told an older sister and got the help she needed.
Volunteers

training, special events and other needs.

Tribute Dinner to Honor Former Congressman Cramer
The Robert E. “Bud” Cramer Tribute Dinner was held
on Friday, February 27, 2009, recognizing the former
Congressman for his 28 years of outstanding service to the
citizens of this community. The event, held at the Westin
in Bridge Street, was hosted by Main Street Strategies
and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Young and was presented by
Charles Anderson, Woody Anderson Ford, Sharon and
Tim Morgan, and Maximum Technology Corporation
along with numerous table sponsors. While honoring his
outstanding accomplishments for the 5th District, much of
the evening was focused on his leadership in developing the
Child Advocacy Center model and its dramatic impact in
this community and around the world.
One major focus of the evening was the legacy former Congressman Cramer started in
1985, when he, along with others, saw the need to create an efficient system for handling
child abuse cases in Madison County. The National Children’s Advocacy Center was then
created to address the many issues involving the investigation, prosecution and therapeutic
care surrounding child abuse cases. The model was extremely successful, and today, the
NCAC is the model more than 900 Children’s Advocacy Centers across the United States
and abroad which served more than 250,000 children in 2008.
Proceeds from the event were donated to the NCAC to assist in providing local services
for children and families in Madison County. The NCAC would like to thank former
Congressman Cramer for all of his work on behalf of children here in Madison County
and throughout the country. Chris Newlin, NCAC Executive Director, said it best,
“Congressman Cramer’s legacy will live in the hearts and minds of our nation whenever we
hear of the battle to end child sexual abuse. Thank you Congressman for your outstanding
leadership and service to our country, especially to our nations’ children.”
Local Bachelors Raise Money for NCAC
The 2009 Bachelor Auction was a huge success raising more than $13,000 for the children
and families we serve. Despite the stormy weather, over 200 guests had fabulous time
bidding on fun dates and packages with local eligible bachelors. There were 17 participating
bachelors ranging in age from 26 to 60. The evening was hosted by Huntsville’s very own
bachelorette, Stephanie Hogan. Bubba’s Catering and Olde Town Brewery generously
provided the food and beverages for the evening.
We would like to thank everyone who made this event possible: All Needz Rental, Hob
Nob, Bubba’s Catering, Don Alan Hankins at Olde Town Brewery, JR Enterprises,
Stephanie Hogan, our bachelors and all of our wonderful volunteers. Special thanks go to
Pete Horton at Horton Auction for generously providing his auctioneering services, and to
auctioneers in training Allison Click and Parker Liles for organizing the event.

NCAC Celebrates Successful September Celebration
The 8th Annual September Celebration for the Kids proved to be a wonderful success.
The two-day event successfully raised a net total of more than $101,000 to support the
programs and services of the NCAC.
The event began on Friday September 18, when
more than 350 guests in cocktail attire enjoyed an
“Evening of Atmosphere and Elegance” with dinner,
dancing, and exciting live and silent auctions at the
Westin in Huntsville. Upon arrival, the guests were
able to begin bidding on a variety of silent auction
items. Masters of Ceremonies, Karen Adams
of Channel 31 and Jimbo Wood of Star 99.1
welcomed everyone to the Celebration. NCAC
Executive Director Chris Newlin, Congressman
Parker Griffith, and Co-Chair of the event Shar
Hendrick each shared their thoughts about the
importance of the work of the NCAC in our community and around the country. Former
Congressman Robert E. “Bud” Cramer was in attendance and was recognized for his vision
and leadership in starting the CAC model.
Live auctioneers, Dr. Gary Huckaby and Dr. Mark Pullen,
led a spirited auction. As part of the live auction, guests
were given the opportunity to pay for therapeutic services
for child abuse victims in Madison County. Together
multiple bidders contributed an outstanding $26,350
toward therapy services at the NCAC! Both the silent
and live auctions were a smashing success. Guests also
enjoyed dancing the night away to the musical styling of
Kozmic Mama.
The Celebration continued on Monday with the Spike
McRoy Kids Classic golf tournament at Valley Hill Country Club. Golfers enjoyed the
four-man scramble and spending the day with PGA Golfer and NCAC supporter Spike
McRoy.
We would like to thank our Event Chairs Shar and Vicki
Hendrick, our many generous sponsors, volunteers and
guests for making this years Celebration a great success.
This financial support is crucial to helping provide
services for local child abuse victims and continuing
prevention efforts in this community.

COINS FOR KIDS
“Coins for Kids,” an annual NCAC school-based fundraiser, kicked off in the Huntsville
City Schools in April to raise funds and awareness to support the many child abuse
prevention and intervention programs provided at the Center.
A total of 13 schools representing the Huntsville City School District participated in
the fundraiser. East Clinton Elementary led their school to victory by raising $431.29.
Challenger Elementary came in second place closely followed by McDonnell Elementary.
Together, our local students raised almost $2200 to support the NCAC and the children
and families that we serve! Now that’s a lot of coins!
We would like to send a special thank you to all students, teachers, administration, and
parents at each of the participating schools for making the “2009 Coins for Kids” such a big
success! Another HUGE thank you goes out to Redstone Federal Credit Union, a NCAC
Community Partner for helping with this event and Domino’s Pizza for providing pizza
parties for each winning class.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month
April is nationally recognized as Child Abuse
Prevention Month. Here in Huntsville, Mayor
Tommy Battle and Madison Mayor Paul Finley
provided official declarations relating to their
jurisdictions. NCAC Executive Director Chris
Newlin and Prevention Director Deborah
Callins spoke on the importance of child abuse
prevention. 385 blue pinwheels stood side by
side, row after row, on the front yard of the
Center throughout the month of April. Each
pinwheel represented one known child abuse
victim in Madison County last year.
