Proč (děti) nemají rády školu? Anglický článek o tom, jak si můžete školu zamilovat! What did school mean for you when you were a child? Classmates, fun, time without parents? And what about learning? Did you care about it? Somehow, probably. Because your parents did. You might have rather felt tired or uninterested, usually. And you were not the only one. What makes children feel like this and what can we do to change it? There is an easy answer on this question, which sounds: involvement. To involve somebody means to provide them with possibility to express their ideas and opinions. Imagine 30 children in one classroom with one teacher having a 45 min lesson. In other words, this means that the teacher has exactly 45 minutes to involve 30 students to their teaching and give them space to understand and react. Now, it is not difficult to calculate that one student has exactly 1 minute and 30 seconds to speak. Well, that´s not much, but at least something. Nevertheless – what does the reality look like? The teacher comes on time (at best), checks the attendance (for about 5 minutes), comments on something (usually a problem like untidy desks or cheeky boys) and then gives a very important command: „Open your books. Unit 5, page 46.“ There are still about 35 minutes left. How will the class spend these? Having „funny“ time with the books. Yeah, that´s it. Text books use to be funny - especially the ones for children. Do you remember the crazy pictures and funny comics? What are they good for? Do they really do their job? The only thing they do is interest the kids – but in fact, they do not teach them anything. A child will never learn a thing with not doing it (this stands for adults, too). So, after having given the command about opening the books, the teacher has dealings with a class matching some words they do not properly understand, filling in sentences they would never be able to form themselves and reading comics focused on grammar they haven´t come across even in Czech yet. It´s nearly impossible to see who is trying to cooperate and who bunks off, as the facial expressions of both these types of children are the same. But how to avoid this? The answer is again really easy. Involve all the children. Every teacher would probably ask: „How to do it when there are so many of them?“ Our aswer would be: let them make pairs and start from the easiest thing you wanna teach them. Write it on the board and tell them to make as many sentences with this as they need. As many sentences as they need is really important information, as it means the children can´t stop unless they feel very comfortable about the practised stuff. And what does it mean to feel very comfortable? To understand and be sure. In other words it means believe yourself. And what do you think, would you like school if it taught you to believe yourself? We believe you would.
