Superintendent’s Message
Pass Illinois Budget! You may have seen this message on some of
our school marquis’ this week. More than 400 Illinois school
superintendents and educators, including the Rock Island-Milan
School District #41, are participating in a collective campaign effort –
"Pass Illinois' Budget" – that is aimed at getting schools equitably and
adequately funded. In a nutshell, "Pass Illinois' Budget" calls on
legislators and the governor to end the state budget impasse, pay
school districts what they are owed this year, and improve the
education-funding formula.
School districts in this area are frustrated about the State of Illinois
budget impasse. Last year, if you remember, we sent a letter to our
families over the summer to ensure them that our doors would be open
at the beginning of the school year in August. We will soon be
approaching that same scenario again if the State of Illinois does not
pass a budget.
The campaign also wants legislators to work on improving the
education funding formula and also pay school districts what they are
owed. For RIMSD #41, the state owes us $2.4 million. What are we
asking? We want state legislators to hear our voices. On our web site
www.rockislandschools.org is information for staff, community
members and parents to use and how to contact state legislators.
We need everyones voice to help make public education
better in the State of Illinois!

student success

Science Night…
with
COCKROACHES!
Longfellow Liberal Arts hosted a
Family Science Night on April 11 and
got a couple of community
organizations involved in the effort!
The Augustana College Biology Club
set up several experiments and also
brought a display that included
cockroaches (a big hit with the
students). The Bettendorf Family
Museum also brought hands on
activities that included experiments
with gravity and trajectory
The event was a great success and the
collaborations made it simple to set up
and get volunteers. “Our students had a
blast,” said Principal Dave Knuckey.
