NO HOG HEAVEN AT DARLYNN’S DARLINS
IN FLORIDA
Animals went without water and food for days. When these chickens were
finally given water by an investigator, they drank for 10 minutes non-stop.

Spunky, left, an emaciated pig with no use of his back legs, stayed with his friend
Buddy in his final moments. Buddy was in urgent need of veterinary treatment,
and though it was promised, he suffered horribly for two weeks before he
passed away.
The pigs, dogs, cats at a “heavenly sanctuary” in Florida only had a hell on
earth at Darlynn’s Darlins Rescue Ranch (DDRR) outside Polk City, Florida.
The YouTube videos are hard to take as the animals were not given
anything to eat for up to 5 days – and then were given rotten scraps and
moldy bread. Sick and dying animals were denied vet care & malnourished
dogs were kept confined to kennels outdoors and were deprived of water as
the temperatures soared to 100 degrees.
CARRIAGE HORSE DROWNS IN SPOOKING
ACCIDENT
Cash, a 13 year old Percheron horse, drowned in the Missouri River
after running loose in a parking lot. The horse’s handler was trying to
put the horse away for the night but it somehow got spooked. The
horse ran loose through a parking lot, hitting multiple parked cars,
then ran down a boat ramp. It is believed that the horse tried to stop
when it was headed for the water but the carriage it was pulling was
too heavy. It took about 3 hours to pull the horse out of the icy waters.
It is believed that the handler should not have removed the blinders
until the horse was detached from the carriage.
Based on documented evidence
presented by PETA, a warrant was
issued by the Polk County Sheriff’s
Office on Aug. 4, 2016. On Aug.
9, 2016, officials charged DDRR
operators Darlynn Czerner &
Clinton Martin with 282 counts of
animal cruelty & 6 felonies. On
Sept. 2, 2016, a judge awarded
custody of 193 animals to the Polk
County Sheriff’s Office & barred
Czerner & Martin from owning or
possessing animals. The reports are
difficult to accept that these animals lived such horrendously cruel
treatment without any respite.

emaciated pigs.

A DREADFUL FEDERAL COURT RULING …..
Judge Eric Clay in Federal Court in Michigan ruled that police can shoot
a dog if it moves or barks when an officer enters a home. In his
decision: “The standard we set out today is that a police officer’s use of
deadly force against a dog while executing a search warrant to search a
home for illegal drug activity is reasonable under the Fourth
Amendment when … the dog poses an imminent threat to the officer’s
safety”.
The decision was the final step in a case in which officers shot & killed
2 dogs while executing a search warrant. An officer testified he shot
the first dog when it appeared to move “a few inches” & lunged at him.
The dog fled to the basement where the officer shot & killed it. Court
documents reveal that another officer killed the second dog after it
also ran to the basement & barked at the officers.
FEDERAL LEGISLATION
The Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act,
H.R. 113 has been reintroduced in the House of
Representatives. This bill would ban horse
slaughter in the U.S. while ensuring American
horses are not exported out of the country for the
same purpose. Please contact your U. S. Congressperson & urge that they
cosponsor H.R. 113, the SAFE Act. For more information on horse slaughter

A pilot whale caught in layers of driftnet flails helplessly.
The technological advances of the past few decades have increased
efficiency enabling the world’s fishing fleet to maximize its catch &
process it at sea. Just as with livestock, the efficiency focus has been
on increasing speed and volume – not on
reducing collateral mortality & destruction of marine habitats.
Commercial fleets employ huge nets & other indiscriminate
methods that sweep up the desired catch while obliterating seabed
habitat in the process. Millions of non-target animals die every year
as bycatch. They are hauled up & thrown overboard – dead or
mortally wounded. The oceans worldwide are choking from the
plastics, garbage & driftnets which are destroying the environment.
The animals are trapped and struggle to no avail. According to
Oceana, millions of marine mammals suffer and die each year.
Some of the netting is up to 12 miles long!

According to PETA, they have had meetings with Canadian Tire –
Canada’s most shopped merchandise retailer and they have agreed
to stop selling fur. This commitment extends to its corporate-owned
subsidiaries including Mark’s, Sports Chek, National Sports & Pro
Hockey Life. This means that nearly 1,100 locations have stopped
selling fur in-store and on line.
CROATIA
Effective January 1, 2017. a complete ban on fur farming went into
effect. The ban was threatened with an exemption that would have
allowed the breeding & slaughter of Chinchillas. Sharon Osbourne
spoke up & she narrated a PETA video on how chinchillas suffer &
die on fur farms. The video was then sent to the country’s Minister
of Agriculture. Croatia sided with animals & they upheld the ban.

CAT HUDDLES ON FIRE ESCAPE FOR 3 DAYS IN
SNOWSTORM AFTER OWNER EJECTS HIM
The 5-6 month old
cat looked in
helplessly as he sat
outside on the fire
escape after his
owner had thrown
him out.
Many times, the job of an Animal Control Officer can be a
thankless one …. even dangerous. It is not the animals that
pose a problem …. it is the contentious attitude of the public.
AHS Animal Control Officer Lamar Williams responded to a
call in Irvington. The caller advised that a guy threw his cat
on the fire escape & the poor cat was outside for 3 days – in
the sub-freezing, snowy weather. When ACO Williams
approached the cat owner, he became extremely aggressive
& stated that it was his cat – filled with expletives –
and he can do what he wants with the cat since it
messes up his house.
It was at that point that ACO Williams contacted the Irvington Police before the situation escalated any
further. The Irvington Police responded and ACO Williams took possession of the cat. The young cat is
about 5-6 months old and was brought to the AHS shelter. After a week in Newark, he was
sent to the AHS/Popcorn Park facility.
Christopher is one of the stream of unwanted cats and kittens that come through our doors.

SNOOPY SURRENDERED TO POPCORN PARK WITH MYSTERIOUS WOUNDS

This 7 year-old Dachshund was

his body and was heavily infested with fleas. Snoopy was

from there. Snoopy was sedated
and made comfortable so that
Dr. Baris was able to get a closer look at the wounds. In her
educated opinion, they could be from either caustic
chemicals, boiling water, or hot oil being thrown on Snoopy
or from a longstanding use of a flea medication. The deep
flesh wounds are definitely not bites from another animal.
Snoopy's road to recovery began that day. He spent two
months being the prince of our medical department where
he was pampered and cared for by the medical staff. They
scrubbed his wounds, kept him comfortable, administered
laser therapy to promote healing, and tended to his every
need. They also discovered that Snoopy had a growth on his
eye that needed further evaluation. Snoopy was taken to an
ophthalmologist at North Star Vets who determined that the
ocular condition would need to be managed with ointment

AHS RESCUES MILD-MANNERED, MIDDLE-AGED “GUARD” DOG
Most animal lovers who see the sight of a “guard” dog cannot grasp the concept of dogs living a life of solitude under
the worst conditions. AHS Animal Control Officer Lamar Williams saw this German Shepherd during a recent snowstorm & had to help him.
In the State of NJ, it can sometimes be difficult to “take a dog” due to legal rights and red tape. But in some cases,
you just do the right thing as you can see from his statement to his staff:
“Being that it was snowing and cold, he was the guard dog that gave up. He had poor shelter, food, but no water and was
very underweight. As soon as I pulled up, he was ready to go. Too cold to put up a fight & no bark left. He said – just get
me outta the cold please …. and I did just that. He seems to be friendly.“
After an overnight stay at AHS, we received a call & returned Max to
his owner who said he had provided a new house. Officer Williams
didn't waste any time in checking up on Max and the “big, beautiful house” he saw was hardly shelter at all - more like a large box
with a large opening that wouldn't provide any protection from the
cold, wind, and snow. There was still no water for Max, no food, but
he did have a pail of tomato sauce.
We are extremely happy to report that after reasoning with the
owner that this was no life
for Max, he finally signed
him over to us.

Snowball and Ponz were
two orphaned squirrels
that came to us at only 4
weeks of age. Popcorn Park
staff did what we usually do
when we receive orphaned
wildlife - we warm them,
prepare formula and feed

Unfortunately, white
squirrels have a statistically
very low survivial rate in
the wild. They instinctually
do everything their gray counterparts do - run or freeze in place for camouflage - but
for them, this can be instant death. We couldn’t let this happen to little Snowball, so we
gave her a safe life with us, kept company by her (neutered) brother Ponz. Why not

Newton & Fig arrived as a hopeful pittie pair waiting for a chance at happiness. Newton sits on

Another Yorkshire Terrier found as a stray.
There is probably an unlicensed irresponsible

DOGS
That angelic face has been waiting for
someone to adopt him! He requires frequent brushings, grooming & would love to
sit on your lap while you do it! File 17814-M.
Noma is an active, energetic lass who will sit
& offer her paw for a treat. She is very
generous in sharing her toys, rawhide & food
bowl with the evaluator. But Noma is not a
fan of other dogs & should be an only pet.
File 17624-F.
Danny was once someone’s delightful pet.
But he became a stray, either abandoned or
stolen. The playful pooch is still puppyish but
very well trained. His food test was good,
released the rawhide when asked, & needs a
little training when he gets into active
playtime with other dogs. Wouldn’t you love
to meet Danny Boy? File 16892-M.
The stray pooches that arrive at our door

Apollo knows how to sit, down … and
will even do a rollover on command. He is
waiting for that special person to come in
who will realize what a great addition he
would make to that family. File 16874-M.
This Shih-Tzu type came in as a matted mess! Thanks
to our groomer, we celebrated her arrival with a spa

waiting to have a date with the next person with

would love some affection & acceptance from you.

From left: Evaluator Linda Wells introduces Max,
a 13 year-old Collie, to the Harris Family of
Ridgefield, NJ and their well-mannered canines.
Max the Collie was brought to AHS when his
owner could no longer care for him.
A forlorn & confused 13 year-old Collie was surrendered to the AHS Newark facility by an owner who
said they just couldn’t care for him any longer. What
a heartache to see a healthy, but aging dog being
surrendered. The AHS took to our Facebook page to
persuade animal lovers to open their hearts and
their home to a very needy dog before he succumbed to a broken heart. Max has gone off to live
with a great family and their canine companions.
Perhaps you may remember Fizzle – a neutered
dog left to wander when it is believed his owner
found that the dog had a kidney condition. He
was placed on the Share-A-Pet Program & was
adopted out shortly thereafter to Sam & Christine
Field of Galloway Township. Thankfully, holidays
are when we receive updates on many alumni.
Fizzle is now re-named Boxer & has been such a joy to them.
Even with his renal issues, he has puppy energy & loves to go
for walks. He can even be seen in the shopping cart at Home
Depot -- & everyone goes crazy for him!. According to the
Fields: “We are loving whatever time we have with him.
Thanks for doing all you do for these great animals!!”

a welcoming hug into their family!
Here is some absolutely fantastic news to really start off your

with us at Popcorn Park, finally his day has come. That's
right, that is our sweet little guy Dimitri you see here with his
wonderful new family! Woo hoo Dimitri!!! This loving little
mush that came to us from our Newark facility a few months
ago after he was picked up as a stray has finally found the
best family ever, that will love and spoil him just the way he
should be. Although we will miss Dimitri with his warm,

The Armstrong Family of Howell were
eager to adopt 8 year-old Maci – a senior

a concern to them.
MATURE MACI FINDS LOVING
HOME IN HOWELL TOWNSHIP
PHOTO SUPPLIED
Our beautiful lady Maci got adopted by a
wonderful family!! We've already received an
update and some pictures of Maci in her new
home and she is doing fantastic! Maci came to us
a few months back when, at 8 years-old, she was
given up by the only family she had ever known
because they were moving and couldn't take her
along. Maci was literally devastated at the loss of
her family and kept to herself for days on end,
wanting nothing to do with us. With lots of
patience and long, quiet talks with Maci, she
decided to trust us a little and went out for a
walk. Little by little, Maci came around and then
suddenly, she decided she was not going to sulk
anymore and her days of devastation ended. She
began wagging her tail, making friends, and
soon, she got herself noticed by these nice
people that just fell in love with her. Maci hit it off with them right away and now, she has
the loving, forever home that she deserves! Congratulations Maci and family!
Best wishes for a long, happy, healthy life together!
Maci made herself at home with the Armstrongs!

Our sweet little girl Toffee is the
latest to hit the jackpot and get
a great new home! You may
remember this adorable little
lady from her sad story of a
couple of months ago. she
arrived with 20 of her friends
that were all rescued from some
pretty horrific circumstances.
The pups were all starved to
near death and kept in tiny,
filthy cages in a basement in Irvington. Thankfully, they were all rescued
and after getting the pups medical treatment and lots of good care, they
all got back on their feet and blossomed into such wonderful little dogs.
Toffee was such a sweet and lovable
little girl that wanted nothing more
than to be loved and treated with
kindness. She sure got that in her new
family, who just adores her. Finally
Toffee will have the safe and loving
home she deserves! Congratulations
Toffee and family, and may you have a
long, happy, healthy life together!
Toffee was an emaciated pup, who arrived
at AHS with 20 of her friends – all
starved, filthy, filled with internal
parasites, ringworm – and now Toffee has
a brand new life ahead of her, thanks to
Sheena and Shawn who opened their
hearts & home to Toffee.

Kristie Lowe of Morrisville, PA
adopted the youngster who will
live a life filled with love &
acceptance.
Featured on the cover of the
Holiday issue was Poppet, an
emaciated pup who was rescued
along with 20 other Boxer mix
pups and adults kept in squalid
conditions in the basement of an
Irvington house. They were
starving to near death until
someone spoke up in time. Our
ACOs were to get in and get all of
the emaciated and sick pups.
Poppet suffered from emaciation,
parasites, ringworm – she was the
tiniest of the group. It took
several weeks to improve her
health. Poppet got noticed
quickly and we are thrilled that
she will now have a good life
that she deserves!
The smallest, skinniest,
sickest pup rescued with

Popcorn Park for several
weeks until she blossomed
into a beautiful Boxer mix!

imaginable internal

The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture has approved the first vaccine formulated
to control the Nobivac Canine Flu Bivalent H3N8 and H3N2. These
dog flus have stricken dogs in over 40 states and have killed some

dogs should be vaccinated against both strains annually, according to
Univ. of Wisconsin veterinary Professor Ronald Schultz, Ph.D. Two
vaccinations delivered 2 to 4 weeks apart are required.
AROUND THE WORLD
CANADA
The City of Montreal has passed a new by-law
which makes it illegal to adopt or otherwise
acquire any dog identified as “a pit bull type
dog” within Montreal city limits. It prevents
shelters from placing these dogs through adoption & imposes mandatory muzzling of these dogs at all times when outdoors – even in their
owners’ backyard & on a 4 foot leash at all times in public. The ban
will penalize any dog deemed as a pit bull type regardless of the individual dog’s behavior. An isolated incident which spurred the new law
involved a dog which was later found to have been registered as a
Boxer. The Montreal SPCA may end shelter services with the City. The
organization says the ban, which comes into effect on March 31st,
makes it impossible to determine what exactly makes up a pit bull. The
law gives current owners until the end of March to provide the City
with a criminal background check and pay $150 for a special permit.
Dogs will have to be sterilized, vaccinated & microchipped
TAIWAN
Taiwan has voted to ban animal testing in the beauty industry.
According to A Humane Nation, Taiwan is the second major market in
Southeast Asia to take a stand and now more than 1.7 billion
consumers in 34 global markets will feel the effects of the cruelty-free
cosmetic campaign. The legislation will go into effect in 2019 & will
ban cosmetic animal testing for both finished products & cosmetic
ingredients.

According to the National Link Coalition, Anna Turley, a member of
Parliament, has introduced Private Member Bill #43 that would
increase maximum sentences available to the Court for specified animal
cruelty offenses. She may be adding proposed amendments including:
a registry of animal abusers, require animal cruelty investigations to
include evidence of interpersonal violence; & mandate veterinarians to
report suspected animal abuse. Scheduled to be heard on Feb. 24th.

An 18 month training program involving dogs selected by Wagtail UK

have been trained to detect ivory & guns stowed away by poachers who
have ravaged the elephant populations. The project is run by the
US–based Wildlife Conservation Society & Tanzanian National Parks. It
is only a matter of time before they start to directly track poachers, as
well as finding ivory.

If you are one of the homeowners concerned
about urine burns on your lawn, there is a
new product that is all natural, straight from the
earth – called Dog Rocks. The rocks should be
submerged in water for 10 hours to become effective. The rocks
are then put into your dog’s water bowl where it is your pet’s main
drinking source. Keep your dog bowl filled with the appropriate amount
of water as the rocks need water to remain effective. It will not mend
already damaged grass, but you won’t see any new spots appear. Rocks
must be replaced every 2 months. For more information visit
www.dogrocks.com or 800-503-3914

enough to fill the room!
Each Christmas, the AHS/Popcorn Park is visited by the young, energetic students
from Allentown High School’s Future Farmers of America! Through the
administration of Denise Emmons, the students gather and collect thousands of
dollars’ worth of much-needed supplies which include dog food, cat food, rabbit
food, blankets, towels, pillows, toys, collars, leashes, detergent, reptile food, cleaning supplies, dog beds, bowls, litter boxes, water bottles – and sooo much more –
too numerous to list here. Once again, the students have shown their potential for
leadership, growth towards an agricultural education. Their annual trek is a holiday
event that Popcorn Park loves to celebrate!
Thanks to Denise Emmons who administers the Future Farmers of
America at Allentown H.S., and sees that they come each year. They are
eager, bright students who visit us every year and we hope that they
learn from the many animals they see at Popcorn Park.

collected at St. Paul’s
Christmas Eve was a magical time when lots of Santa’s elves visited to
help make it a joyous holiday for our patient pooches waiting to find a
new home. Juliana Troy and brothers Austin & William are the elves
that brought donations collected at St. Paul’s Christian School. Juliana
had collected them with the help of her friends, Robyn Brown, Julia
Cortright & Jamie White. TheTroy Family are wonderful friends to
animals and to the AHS. They donated 70 – yes 70 – Kuranda beds for
the comfort of our dogs. They have adopted from us in the past & we
are grateful to count them as loving supporters – and the kids are kind
and caring to our shelter animals. Thanks to the Troy Family, our
animals will have a Happier New Year!

MORRISSEY TO BAN MEAT DURING

Morrissey, former frontman for The Smiths, plans to ban meat for all five of his
Australian tour venues. He has cancelled shows from Taiwan to Iceland for his
concern about “skewered dogs” being on sale during his China tour. The
controversial musician’s second album with The Smiths was entitled “Meat Is

secretly filmed inside slaughterhouses.
KAT VON D COSMETIC TO GO VEGAN
Kat Von D announced that she is reformulating her entire make up line to be cruelty
fee and vegan. She will be collaborating with TooFaced Cosmetics to create a makeup palette that is 100% vegan & cruelty free. Anyone who wants to partner/work with
her will have to abide by her new standards. Cosmetic testing is a topic that needs to
be addressed. Even though alternative methods exist, people do not necessarily
support the practice & thousands of animals are subject to cruel tests each year.

Four years ago, Sedgwick LLP in Newark held its first donation drive for AHS in Newark.
According to Paralegal Susan Forsthoff, it was that first visit from Sedgwick staffers that
Susan began to volunteer with the shelter … and still does to this day. Each year, Sedgwick
LLP holds an annual donation drive for AHS-Newark. A few weeks ago, Susan and Marta
Correa visited AHS-Newark to deliver this year’s donation. Much needed was newspapers,
cardboard and shredded paper which they deliver on a regular basis. They also brought
pet food, cleaning supplies, and lots of goodies for the animals in residence.

NEWS FROM NEW JERSEY
TOMS RIVER
Nicholas Piccolino, 33, has been charged with
beating a 10 year-old female Bichon Frise dog
to death while her owner was away. A necropsy
report showed that Booshu suffered multiple
blunt force injuries to her head & her body
which contributed to her death. NJSPCA
Detective Larry Donato & the Seaside Heights police are handling
the investigation. Piccolino was held in Ocean County Jail in lieu of
$35,000 bail.
HIGHLAND PARK
Janakrai R. Patel, a U.S. Postal Service carrier, is alleged to have
pepper-sprayed a dog while he was on duty in the course of his
federal employment. Judge Michael A. Shipp ruled that there were
adequate grounds for removal of the case to federal court. Patel
stated he was acting within the scope of his federal employment.
AROUND THE USA
MANAHAWKIN
A $2,000 reward is being offered for the arrest & conviction of the person who
shot two cats, one of which died. The surviving cat was adopted to the
receptionist at the Stafford Veterinary Hospital. “Lucky” has had permanent
vision and hearing difficulties.
EMERSON
Town officials are expecting Emerson to be the first town in Bergen County to
pass an ordinance to ban the sale of puppy mill dogs. The ordinance will
require the dog’s birth date, along with name & address of veterinarian &
their breeder, as well as the USDA license number.
SHAMONG
Gary Schleinkofer, 37, of Fawn Lake Village pleaded guilty in municipal court
to unnecessarily & cruelly abusing & tormenting a living creature. Schleinkofer
allowed & encouraged a dog & cat at his home to attack his neighbor’s cat.
When the owner tried to retrieve it, he picked it up by the throat, unsupported
while the other cat was hanging on to it, & threw the animal. The cat suffered
no serious injuries. Schleinkofer was fined $1,000 & ordered to perform 10
days community service & also banned from owning a pet for 5 years.
MASSACHUSETTS
Voters approved an animal confinement measure which not only stops
extreme confinement of hens, breeding sows & veal calves, but applies the
same standard of animal welfare to the sale of eggs, pork or veal, no matter where they are produced.
VIRGINIA
Serving a warrant on a Henrico VA man wanted in
Pennsylvania on charges of rape & child porn,
resulted in charging a roommate with bestiality &
animal cruelty after finding multiple images of the
roommate having sex with Rottweiler dogs. It was reported that 36 year-old
Craig Knox told police that 27 year-old Stephen Matthew Taylor was having
sex with dogs. One dog was examined by a veterinarian & found to have
infections in his penis, rectum & anal glands, according to a report in The
Link-Letter and the NationalLinkCoalition.org
MICHIGAN
According to the Animal Welfare Institute, a new bill has been introduced
which would potentially continue the approval of extreme confinement of
farm animals. HB5987would create a livestock board responsible for crafting animal husbandry standards. If enacted, the bill automatically repeals
current law that prohibits extreme confinement of farm animals. The bill
would also stymie future progress for animal welfare in the state.
OKLAHOMA
“Justice for J.W. Act” would increase the maximum sentence from the current 10 years to 20 years for a person who forces another person to engage
in “the detestable & abominable crime against nature” committed with
mankind or with a beast. The bill was signed into law on May 6th by
Governor Mary Fallin.
ALABAMA
A petition is being circulated by the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) to
protect animals in Barbour County. The law requires each county in the
state to maintain a “county pound & an impounding officer” for impoundment of stray dogs, cat & ferrets. But Barbour County has no shelter. The
ALDF has filed a lawsuit to compel the county to follow its state law.
MICHIGAN
Gov. Snyder has signed SB1187 which is intended to create an open season
on wolf hunting in the Upper Peninsula. The bill also includes a clause that
protects the bill from being subjected to a public referendum. The people
of Michigan cannot overturn it unless or until a more responsible state legislature repeals it, according to the Animal Legal Defense Fund.
FLORIDA
Petland Sarasota has filed a lawsuit challenging a Sarasota County, Florida
ban on the sale of commercially bred cats & dogs. The county ordinance
was designed to eliminate the local sale of animals brought in from
“puppy mills” or “kitten factories” by prohibiting any new retail pet store
from selling animals that have not been bred or raised where they are
being sold. The new rule outlaws traditional retail pet stores & sets a deadline for existing commercial pet stores to cease cat/dog sales by Jan. 27th.
Petland’s lawsuit is asking a 12th Circuit Court judge to overturn the county ordinance as unconstitutional & inconsistent with state law or for the
county to compensate Petland for eliminating its property rights to sell animals. At the center of the disagreement is the rule’s exception for so-called
“hobby breeders”.
CONNECTICUT
Effective Oct. 1, 2016, HB5344 allows courts to appoint attorneys or law
school students as advocates for any animals involved in prosecutions concerning custody of the animals or their welfare.
NEW HAMPSHIRE
HB 1547 establishes the crime of bestiality as a Class A misdemeanor for a
first offense & Class B felony for subsequent offenses. Convicted offenders
will be required to submit to psychological assessment & counseling at their
own expense. The bill was signed into law in June.
ALASKA
HB 147 was signed into law on Oct. 27th. The law takes effect on January
17, 2017 & will allow victims to petition the court for a protective order that
the abuser may not remove, harm or dispose of any animals in the household. It would grant the victim exclusive care & custody of them. Peace officers investigating domestic violence cases must inform victims of this provision. The law gives courts authority to decide individual or joint custody
when people divorce. It defines an act of animal abuse in this context as
domestic violence.
OHIO
Senate Bill 331 which criminalizes bestiality, and where cockfighting would
be a felony offense.
ILLINOIS
Chicago Aldermen have introduced a plan to order all animal shelters in
the City to become “no kill” facilities. The order that aldermen brought forward at the City Council directs the head of the city Animal Care & Control
Commission to amend operating procedures to reflect “established, recognized humane measures and policies in all city shelters”.
ARKANSAS
Mars Petcare & Whistle have teamed up to create a safe world for K-9 officers by donating Whistle GPS Pet Trackers for all K-9 officers in the
Greenwood Police Dept., Fort Smith Police Dept., & Sebastian County

Blue Ridge Beef of Eatonton, Georgia has voluntarily recalled two of its
frozen products due to their potential to be contaminated with Salmonella
and/or Listeria. The affected products are sold in 2 lb. chubs & were distributed to retail stores in the following states: Arizona, Florida, Georgia,
North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas. Those with questions ca e-mail

Carnivore Meat Company is voluntarily recalling a single limited lot of Vital
Essentials Frozen Chicken Patties Entrée for Dogs. The FDA notified
Carnivore Meat Company after selecting & testing their product as part of
a national collection initiative that one of the samples tested positive for
Salmonella.
According to Veterinary Practice News, 10 pet foods tested in a Chapman
University’s Food Science Program study contained a meat source not listed on the label, raising concerns for allergy suffering cats & dogs & a call
for greater oversight. The study, published in the Journal Food Control,
also could not detect the listed meat in 7 of the 52 samples. In three cases
of wet cat food, wet dog food & dog treat, the absence & addition of meat
sources may indicate intentional or accidental substitution. Pork was the
most common undeclared meat in 7 out of 52 samples. Some samples
claimed to contain beef actually had none upon testing.
The J.M. Smucker Company announced a limited voluntary recall on certain
lots of 9 Lives EverPet and Special Kitty canned cat food due to possible low
levels of thiamine (Vitamin B1). Thiamine deficiencies in cats can lead to
decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting, weight loss, wobbly walking, circling, falling & seizures. Anyone using this product should stop feeding it
to their cats & call the company’s service hotline at 800-828-9980. This
includes: Meaty Pate with Chicken & Tuna, Mixed Grill Dinner, Beef and
Liver Dinner, Super Supper, Classic Tuna Dinner, Seafood Poultry Variety
Pack, Meaty Pate with Ocean Whitefish, Meaty Pate with Liver and Chicken,
Meaty Pate with Chicken Dinner. This includes 5.5 oz. and 13. Oz. cans.

SERVICE DOG NEWS
PENNSYLVANIA – A teen-age boy
was turned away from seeing Santa
because of Jiffy, a 10 year old Lab
mix, who was a service dog for
Bradley, who has a disability. This
occurred at the Washington Crown
Center when the family wanted to
have a photograph with Santa but
the family was told that “animals
were only permitted near Santa on a Pet Day due to possible allergic
reactions to other patrons. The mall’s management intervened & the issue
was resolved, ultimately allowing Bradley to give his letters to Santa.
MICHIGAN – An appeals court said that Judge Angela Pasula had the
authority to allow the presence of Mr. Weeber, a black lab, to be at a trial
to protect and assist witnesses. A southwestern Michigan man who was
convicted of criminal sexual conduct claimed the jury may have been influenced by the dog who sat at the feet of a girl while she testified in court.
Jordan Johnson’s conviction & 6 year prison sentence were affirmed.
PENNSYLVANIA – The Lackawanna County District Attorney’s Office plans
to get a service dog that will be specifically trained to detect a person’s
stress hormones. This will help victims of child abuse or assault testify in
court. Two detective will be trained handlers of the new service dog. The
primary handler will be a detective who will make the dog part of her
family.
VIRGINIA - The Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine has
teamed up with Saint Francis Service Dogs to raise three puppies destined
to become service dogs. During the day at the veterinary college, they
follow a detailed program developed by Saint Francis & in the evenings,
they will go home with their puppy raisers.
PENNSYLVANIA - Patty is a Labrador Retriever who is a full-time police
K-9 officer & a member with the Beaver Falls Fire Dept. She works as an
arson dog when needed & it is her job to sniff out accelerants when
investigators believe that the fire involves arson. She trains 1-2 hours daily
& can find a single drop of gasoline in a football field. Patty started out
as a service dog as a guide dog for the blind …. but she would eat blind
people’s food & got kicked out of school!
The Humane Animal Bond Research Initiative (HABRI) Foundation has
awarded a $42,000 grant to Purdue University to lead a first-of-its-kind
controlled scientific study to measure the effects of service dogs on post
9/11 war veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and/or
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). K9s for Warriors program will take part in this
study. Although numerous studies confirm that companion animals help
reduce stress, depression, etc., the U. S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs has cited
a lack of specific scientific evidence on effectiveness of service animals for
war vets.
K9s for Warriors provides service dogs at no cost & they will take part in
the study. They have paired more than 70 dogs & veterans each year.

NEW JERSEY LEGISLATION
“Charlie’s Law” (Allen-Sweeney) would make
anyone who denies access to a disabled person with
a service dog liable for a civil fine starting at $250.
The penalty would increase to $500 for a second
violation and $1,000 for any subsequent violation.
The bill was named after Charlie, a 2 year old
goldendoodle who was with his owner, Benjamin Shore, 16, of Cherry Hill
who were asked to leave a Florida airport. The bill was voted out of the
Senate Health Committee and went to the Senate floor for a vote. If the
bill passes, the law’s fines would go toward funding education programs
for law enforcement on the rights of those with service dogs. The law
would also require the Attorney General’s Office to start a public awareness
campaign to teach the public about the new rules.

SHARE-A-PET
PROGRAM
The unique SHARE-A-PET PROGRAM was established in 1978. The animals are chosen for various
reasons so that you can select from the homeless dogs or cats featured each issue. We also give our
Share-A-Pet parents the choice of receiving photos, reports, etc. by mail or through your e-mail. In the
last several months, many of the animals on the program are featured in their own personalized videos!
For the $10.00 monthly donation, you will receive a color photo and report three times a year, a
membership card, free admission to Popcorn Park, ad you can visit your pet for walks, etc. All funds
gathered under this program are applied directly to the care of these animals. Any funds exceeding the
need for a particular animal are applied to the care and welfare of other shelter animals. You can view
and sponsor all Share-A-Pets on our website at www.ahscares.org You can also order our most recent
edition of the Share-A-Pet Booklet (see Page 16) The staff has undertaken an effort to take videos of
many of our Share-A-Pets, and posted them on YouTube. Videos can also be seen on our Facebook

Bella & Luke of Waretown
When a Waretown owner was evicted from their home, they found it
necessary to surrender 8 year-old
Bella, a Shepherd and Luke, a 6 yearold Lab. They have been featured in
the HUMANE NEWS and on the
Associated Humane Popcorn Park
Shelter Facebook page. The bonded
pair settled in & began making
friends. They are housebroken, will sit
& offer a paw when asked. Life isn’t
what it used to be, but they accepted
this new existence. Bella and Luke
had already lost enough; they certainly didn’t want to lose each other.
Both dogs were altered and it was
discovered that Bella has several
masses and sadly, it was confirmed
that they were malignant. The cancer
does not require any treatment & may not have any drastic effect on her. Bella could live for 6
months or 6 years. It is difficult finding a home for one dog – but for two, it is extraordinarily difficult …. especially with Bella’s health concern. Bella and Luke are both sweet, well behaved and waiting for a chance at a life of happiness together. They are now on the Share-A-Pet Program and living on the Animal Haven Farm. Snowball & Lightfoot of Newark
The 9 year-old English Bulldogs were brought to AHS when their owner
could no longer care for them. One would think that because of their
age, they are heading toward their twilight years …. but nothing could be
further from the truth! They act like children – energetic, boisterous, and
playful! We thought that a heartbreaking story of two seniors might attract
some offers for adoption, but Cinnamon and Boss love it here! They are
people focused, have upbeat personalities and although they may miss their
owner, they live each day to the fullest! They have been included on the
Share-A-Pet Program to share their joy with you.

Snowball &
Lightfoot are
a sweet older
couple that
were turned
in by their
elderly
owner who
could no longer care for them. Snowball, a 10 year-old orange/white male, and
Lightfoot, a 6 year-old female grey tiger, are the best of friends. They are always
curled up together, snoozing peacefully or cleaning each other. Snowball is very
much into napping, being petted & purring up a storm when given attention.
Lightfoot is a little more active & ready to roll around so Snowball will play a little.
The pussycat pair are calm, gentle & sweet. We have placed them on the Share-APet Program so they can live in Kitty City. File 26917 & File 26912 (Forked River).
