Denton Avenue ES: Philosophy and Goals
• At Denton Avenue we are committed to educating the whole child – that is,
enabling each child to develop their unique talents and reach their fullest
potential. Our children are inspired by teachers who stimulate their curiosity to
learn, encouraged by parents who support their efforts and empowered by a
school community that works collaboratively to provide a challenging and
engaging curriculum.
• Our goal is to prepare our children to become life-long learners and achieve their
individual goals and dreams. With the goal of assisting our children in becoming
contributing members of our global community and future citizens of a democratic
society, we promote the values of respect, compassion, responsibility, and good
citizenship. Denton students participate in community recycling and conservation
programs, student government organizations and community service clubs.
Our Language Immersion Goals
• Develop greater cross-cultural understanding and acceptance
• Prepare them to live, work and thrive in a global community
• Develop the 21st century skills of communication, collaboration, critical
thinking and creativity
• Ensure that our children are truly bilingual
• Develop strong literacy skills in both English and Spanish
• Speaking and listening skills are a focus for our Kindergarten students

I hear that School X has and
elementary X program, but what is
the difference?
The differences defined
Let’s Define
Foreign Language at
the Elementary School
(FLES)
• 5–15% of class time is spent in the foreign
language and time is spent learning language
itself. The goals of the program are to acquire
proficiency in listening and speaking (degree of
proficiency varies with the program), to acquire
an understanding of and appreciation for other
cultures, and to acquire some proficiency in
reading and writing (emphasis varies with the
program).
Let’s Define
Two-Way Immersion
Programs
• The programs include fairly equal numbers of
two groups of students: native English speakers
and English language learners (native speakers
of another language, such as Spanish, Korean,
or Chinese). Two-way immersion is a unique kind
of language education because it involves two
languages in two ways: Two languages are used
for instruction, and two groups of students are
involved—students who are native English
speakers and students from another language
background, most often Spanish.
Let’s Define the Immersion Program in the Herricks PS
Partial Immersion
Program
• In partial immersion, about half of the class time
is spent learning subject matter in the foreign
language (50%). The goals are to become
functionally proficient in the second language, to
master subject content taught in the foreign
languages, and to acquire an understanding of
and appreciation for other cultures, but to a
lesser extent than complete immersion.
The Process to get into the program
• Completed application
• If the applications are less than 48, there is no need for a lottery
• If there are more than 48 application, then the Assistant Superintendent for
Instruction will hold a lottery and pick 48 names
• Parents are notified
• Wait list is created
• Get ready for an adventure!
