You can open the program in any web browser, e.g. Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox.
Your organisation may have created a link to the program via your Intranet site. If so, select
the Chemwatch/Chemgold link from the relevant section of your site.
Alternatively, a unique web address (URL) may have been provided. Enter this URL in the
address bar of your browser.
Use this space to write down your web address or intranet path:
A black page will appear, and soon after that a new "Chemgold II" window should pop up in
front of that page. In some cases, a “Pop-up blocker” may prevent this new page from
displaying. See next page for details on negotiating Pop-up blockers.
Sometimes Pop-up blocker notifications appear on the menu bar or toolbar of your browser.
Pop-ups can be allowed by simply clicking on the notification and selecting "Always Allow
Pop-ups from This Site..." A dialogue box will then appear confirming that you want to allow
Pop-ups from Chemwatch sites.
If the second page still does not appear, try the web address or link again, and check your
browser carefully for any subtle Pop-up notifications. Sometimes they are hard to see and
may appear as buttons on your menu bar.

A new page will pop up prompting you for a User ID and Password.
If our server recognises your computer, no User ID and Password will need to be entered
here. To add your computer (IP address) to our list, please ask your IT department to contact

You can create a link to the program on your desktop by adding the site to your favourites list
(Internet Explorer) or Bookmarking the page (Mozilla Firefox.) Note that the link can only be
created on the page where your browsers menu items are displayed.
The Favourites link or Bookmark can then be copied to your desktop by selecting it with your
right mouse button, choosing "Copy", and then Right-clicking on your Desktop and selecting
"Paste".
Once you access the program, you will encounter the main search screen. This screen has a
number of sections as shown below:
Moving your mouse over the gold Documents button displays a menu. Selecting
WORKBOOK will display the Training Workbook used in our training sessions. This document
will help familiarise you with all aspects of the program.
If you are interested in attending a Chemwatch training session in your capital city, or if you
would like us to train at your premises, please contact us on +61 3 9573 3516

Each screen displays several help icons in the form of question marks:
to help screens for that particular area.
. These icons link
Interactive animated Help Movies are also available on these screens and can be accessed
by clicking on the title "Play Movie". A new menu will appear with a list of movies. These
movies describe a particular part of the program (Auto mode) or prompt you to perform
certain mouse clicks (Manual mode.) Clicking inside the flashing orange circles will always
advance the movie to the next screen.
After entering a material name in the search box, click on this button to activate the search.
You can search for a material by its common, formal, trade, manufacturer's name, chemical
formula, or code number. Try to avoid general terms such as paint, oil or acid, as there are
many thousands of these on the database. If in doubt, just type in the name that you know.
The fewer words you enter, the faster the search will be.
The search engine automatically includes alternative British/US spellings e.g. if "sulphuric
acid" is typed in, the search engine will also look for "sulphuric acid".
If you are unsure of the exact spelling of the material, type in part of the chemicals name; e.g.
type "hydrof" for hydrofluoric acid. If the search engine does not find an exact match, it will
search for the best matches and display them in the hit list.
Chemwatch Searches are not case sensitive so capitals don't matter, however spaces do
matter. Spaces counts as characters, so typing XYZ1234 for XY Z1 124 may not generate the
correct result.

Once the search button is pressed, a list will generate.
If there is no exact matching Chemwatch name for the product you searched for, you may see
two names, one coloured green. This will happen if the name you searched for appears as a
synonym for the Chemwatch Name. More than one product may have the same synonym,
and one product may have many synonyms.
If exact matches are found in the database, they will be displayed first. If the chemical you are
searching for does not appear in the list screen, click the Continue button. This enables the
system to conduct a wider search by reviewing any other synonyms or alternative names.
Click once on a substance to view the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for that substance
(Simple Mode.)
The MSDS loads one section at a time so you can read while it is loading; after which a
sidebar appears. Moving your mouse over the sidebar, displays a list of topics: Select the
topic of interest: Personal Protection, First aid, Transport, etc.
Selecting the “CLICK FOR OPTIONS” link on the MSDS opens a list of display options. Short
versions of the MSDS may be selected. Specific codes, phrases, graphics can be displayed
or hidden.
-4-
Once the list screen is generated, a gold "Filter" button appears on the left side of the screen
beneath the "Documents" button. Selecting this button displays a list of categories:
Clicking on Hazardous or Dangerous will only display the
Hazardous Substances or Dangerous Goods from the list
whereas clicking on Either will display both.
Clicking on Non-Haz displays the substances from the list that
are Non Hazardous. This is can be useful if you are looking
for an alternative, Non Hazardous substance related to your
search.
Tip: To find a Non-Hazardous Thinner, type “Thinner”,
press Search, then Press Continue., Wait for the list, then
press Filter > Non-Hazardous
Along side each material in the list screen are four icons.
Displays a gallery of templates for printing labels. It also provides a short cut
to the Mini-MSDS; a one-page summary of the material
Locates all the stores in your Manifest in which this material is found
Displays Emergency Information for this material. Reports include First Aid,
Fire Fighting, Spills and Advice to Doctor.
Views the Collection of Suppliers' Original MSDS
