Clay County, Name Index to the McCrea-Brown
Hardware Company Petty Ledger, 1902–1907
Rachel M. Popma
The McCrea-Brown Hardware Company of Brazil, Indiana, was in business by 1896 and
operated until at least 1930. The original proprietors were likely Thomas H. McCrea and John F.
Brown.1 Both men were the sons of Scottish immigrants who had come to Clay County by 1870
and originally worked in the county’s coal mines.2 By 1900 John’s brother Robert had joined the
business as a clerk, and by 1920, John and Robert’s nephews John W. Brown and H. Kenneth
Brown (the sons of John and Robert’s brother Alexander) also were working with them as
salesman and bookkeeper, respectively.3 Earlier store bookkeepers included McCrea’s sisters
Mary and Louise.4
McCrea appears to have left the business by 1920, when he was listed in the census as the
proprietor of a clay and tile works.5 A 1921 city directory indicates the Brown Hardware
Company (as it was then named) was located at 21-25 West National Avenue in Brazil.6 John W.
Brown continued to work for and ultimately would manage the business by 1930.7 No listing of a
Brown Hardware Company was located in a 1935 Brazil business directory, but as a Brazil
Hardware Company was listed at the same address on National Avenue, it is likely the business
continued under a different name.8
The collections of the Indiana Historical Society’s William Henry Smith Memorial
Library include two ledgers from the McCrea-Brown Hardware Company.9 One, a record of
notes and bills receivable, spans much of the life of the business (1896–1932) and lists the maker
and endorser of a note and information regarding how much was owed, when the note was due,
and whether the note was paid. This ledger is indexed, allowing researchers to locate a person of
interest by name.
The second ledger, and the subject of this article, is a petty ledger dated January 1902 to
July 1907. A record of each customer’s accounts was kept in this ledger, listing what was
purchased, when, and for what cost, as well as payments made by customers against their
Clay County, Name Index to the McCrea-Brown Hardware Company Petty Ledger, 1902–1907
accounts. During this period the store sold material including household goods, tools, building
supplies, farm supplies (such as fencing and seed), ammunition, dynamite, and gasoline. Repair
services were provided also. The information recorded in the ledger provides insight into not
only what one’s individual ancestor may have purchased on a given day, but taken as whole,
provides a detailed overview of the needs and activities of a large segment of the local
community.
The ledger is organized by customer name and date, and one customer may have multiple
pages of recorded accounts. When the ledger was filled, outstanding accounts were transferred to
a new volume. Because accounts were recorded as orders were placed and customers came into
the store, names are not listed in alphabetical order. However, an alphabetical index was kept at
the front of the volume to enable a clerk or bookkeeper to quickly locate a customer’s current
information. That index has been transcribed below.
Entries from the index are listed as they appear (i.e., not originally in complete
alphabetical order). Brackets are used in three instances: 1) If a letter or letters in a name are
unclear, they are bracketed; 2) If the ledger spells the same name in different ways in different
places, the names are listed together in brackets; 3) If the spelling of a name is unclear and may
be one of two or more spellings, these are listed in brackets with a query (?) before the end
bracket. Page numbers are included in the original index, but because these were often crossed
out, corrected, or added to as time passed and new entries created, they have not been transcribed
here. A place of residence is inscribed next to some names in the original index, and, if available,
such identifiers are included here in brackets to differentiate between those of the same name. As
always, researchers are encouraged to consult the original document.
