3rd Grade Susan B. Anthony Issue 3.5 Our class recently completed a study of Frederick Douglass, a man who dedicated his life to achieving equal rights for black Americans. Douglass met with and had great respect for the next individual we will study, Susan B. Anthony. Though Susan B. Anthony grew up during a time when most girls did not receive a formal education, Anthony’s family believed in the value of education for all children. However, even as an educated woman, Anthony was often prevented from speaking in public about causes she supported such as the abolition of slavery, educational reform, and labor reform. She felt very strongly that women deserved the same rights as men and began working closely with the women’s rights movement. At the age of 49, Anthony founded the National Women’s Suffrage Association with fellow suffragette and friend Elizabeth Cady Stanton. The goal of the organization was to help women gain the right to vote and Anthony worked to achieve this goal for the rest of her life, even getting arrested for illegally voting in the 1872 election. She appeared before every Congress between 1869 and 1906 to speak in support of the women’s suffrage amendment. Unfortunately, Anthony died fourteen years before women were given the right to vote. Finally, in 1920, the 19th Amendment, also known as the Susan B. Anthony Amendment, was ratified and women helped to elect President Warren G. Harding. discuss the role of Susan B.
