Feverfew Plus should seek further examination to rule out structural or functional
abnormalities.
Formula Notes: Feverfew Plus contains standardized extracts of Yan Hu Suo and Feverfew,
two of the strongest analgesic herbs for relief of many types of headaches. Feverfew is the
only herb used in Europe to be specific for the treatment of migraine. It has been used
throughout recorded medical history as a bitter tonic and remedy for severe headaches. Part
of the herb's action appears to be via an inhibition of secretion of the granular contents from
platelets and neutrophils in the blood. It is likely that the sesquiterpenelactones inhibit
prostaglandins and histamine released during the inflammatory process, preventing spasms of
the blood vessels in the head that trigger migraine attacks.
Bai Zhi has analgesic properties, and along with Chuan Xiong, is used to guide the effects of
the formula upward. Chuan Xiong and Dan Shen dispel statis and unblock the peripheral channels. Ge Gen dispels pathogenic influences from the muscle layer, and is especially effective
for stiffness and spasms in the neck and shoulders which can be an additional factor in many
headaches. Bai Shao ―softens‖ the Liver and relieves pain, as well as addressing possible
underlying Yin and Blood Xu which can lead to Liver Yang Rising.

Glucosamine and MSM
Indications: (with appropriate presentation) osteoarthritis pain, rehabilitating cartilage,
renewing synovial fluid, and repairing joints that have been damaged from osteoarthritis,
-op recovery, broken bones
post
Western Therapeutic Effects
1. Reduces inflammation and pain
2. Renews synovial fluid
3. Rehabilitates cartilage
4. Promotes joint health and flexibility
Chinese Therapeutic Effects
1. Strengthens sinews and bones
2. Invigorates Blood circulation
Cautions & Contraindications: Some sources advise caution with pregnancy. Several
studies have shown that glucosamine can effect blood sugar levels so, so those with diabetes
should check their blood sugar levels more frequently when first starting this formula.
Suggested Dosage: Take 2 capsules 3 times a day with meals or as needed. Glucosamine
and MSM is a useful adjunct to Frameworks, Frameworks Acute and Painful Joint Formula for
treatment of pain as well as rebuilding bone and connective tissue.
Formula Notes: Glucosamine and MSM is one of two Blue Dragon Formulas not based in TCM
herbal theory. It has been added to the line for its effectiveness and practicality in treating one of the
most common problems seen in many TCM practices, that is, pain.
Glucosamine is a natural sugar produced by the body and found in certain foods. It plays an important
role in the production, maintenance, and repair of connective tissue, including cartilage, ligaments and
tendons. In most cases, the joints produce sufficient glucosamine to keep the connective tissue in good
repair, but if they fail to do so, they can dry out, degenerate, crack, and, in the case of cartilage, even
completely wear away. Left unprotected, the joints then become swollen, stiff, inflamed, tender, and
painful--the condition known as osteoarthritis. Glucosamine works by stimulating the production of
glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans, two essential building blocks of cartilage. It helps decrease
cartilage destruction, joint pain, swelling and loss of flexibility, and without the harmful side effects that
are associated with NSAIDs or COX-2 drugs.
MSM is an organic source of sulfur which is also utilized by the body in the formation of connective tissue, and in the antioxidant glutathione. Sulfur is essential to good health, but is easily destroyed by modern food processing methods resulting in widespread deficiencies. It is structurally and functionally important to more than 150 compounds in the body including enzymes, hormones, antibodies and free
radical scavengers. MSM helps detoxify the body and increases blood circulation. In clinical studies, it
has been shown to reduce inflammation, thus reducing pain and allowing the muscles to heal. MSM
makes the cell walls flexible and elastic. MSM also makes cell walls permeable, allowing water and nutrients to freely flow into cells and allowing wastes and toxins to properly flow out.

Suggested Dosage: Take 2 capsules 3 times a day with meals or as needed.
Cautions & Contraindications: None
Formula Notes: Though obviously not a TCM formula, Green Dream was added to the Blue
Dragon line for its wide ranging usefulness for so many conditions found in clinical practice, as
listed above in ―Indications.‖ The importance of a balanced and nutritious diet cannot be overstated to our patients; nor can the all too common lack of follow through due to long standing
habits. The most basic problem occurs because of an overly acidic condition in the body from a
diet too heavily tilted toward meat and potatoes, and not enough fresh fruits and, in particular,
green vegetables. Excess acidity contributes to inflammation and pain syndromes, blood sugar
imbalances, high cholesterol, digestive disorders as well as increased susceptibility to infection
form various bacterial, viral and fungal infections. This formula makes it relatively easy for our
patients to follow their mothers (and our) good advice to ―Eat your greens!‖

minutes. Be sure to advise patients to reuse the leaves several times during the day.
Cautions & Contraindications: Insomnia; use with caution in cases of Stomach Qi Xu as
Green Tea may cause irritation when taken in excess. The effect of the caffeine in Green Tea
may be potentiated when given in conjunction with oral contraceptives or Tagamet.
Formula Notes: The Chinese Emperor, Shen Nung, known as the ―Divine Healer‖ is credited
with discovering tea. Legend has it that some tea leaves blew into a pot of water that the
Emperor was boiling, and lo and behold, a new beverage was born. Shen Nung also produced
the first written account of tea in his medical book, ―The Pen Ts‘ao‖ in 2737 B.C. in which he
wrote that tea ―quenches the thirst, lessens the desire for sleep and gladdens and cheers the
heart.‖
Today, modern research has shown the many health benefits of Green Tea. It enhances
immune system function by increasing production of interleukin and B and T cells as well as
guarding against the oxidants and free radicals that weaken the body‘s natural defenses.
It also prevents normal cells from turning cancerous and suppresses the formation and growth
of tumors. In addition, it lowers the bad LDL cholesterol, while keeping the helpful HDL up. Tea
also lowers blood pressure and reduces the risk of stroke by making blood platelets less sticky
and damaging arteries without the risks associated with aspirin and other blood thinners.
It even encourages bowel regularity and reduces constipation.

Gymnema Plus
Indications: (with appropriate presentation) high blood glucose levels, carbohydrate and
sugar cravings, diabetes mellitus
Western Therapeutic Effects
1. Lowers blood glucose levels
2. Lowers cholesterol and tryglyceride levels
Chinese Therapeutic Effects
1. Tonifies the Qi and Strengthens the Spleen
2. Moves stagnant Liver Qi
Suggested Dosage: Take 2-3 capsules 3 times a day between meals or as needed.
Cautions & Contraindications: Patients should not abruptly stop using drug therapy as
there is a risk of hyperglycemia or diabetic ketoacidosis. Herbal and drug therapy should
overlap for several weeks before tapering off drug therapy with the advise of their physician.
Formula Notes: The king herb in the formula, Gymnema Sylvestre, has been widely used in
Indian, Japanese, Vietnamese and Australian folk medicine for centuries. It is best known for
its ability to lower blood sugar levels. Clinical studies have shown that it works in several ways
to help control both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. First, the acids in Gymnema decrease the
amounts of sugar that are absorbed from foods. As a result, blood sugar levels do not increase
as much as usual after meals. Secondly, it promotes the production of insulin by the body. It is
possible that Gymnema may even prompt the pancreas to develop more beta cells – the
source of insulin. It also makes the bodies cells more responsive to insulin, thereby reversing
insulin resistance. In studies of animals with diabetes, Gymnema reduced body weight, blood
cholesterol, and triglyceride levels. Although the exact reasons are not clear, it is believed that
it blocks the absorption of dietary fats into the bloodstream.
In human and animal clinical studies, the Chinese herbs Bai Zhu, Xi Yang Shen, Yu Jin, Sheng
Jiang, as well as Nettles, have been shown to decrease blood glucose levels. Pu Gong Yin
contains a compound which traps glucose molecules and prevents them from reaching high
concentrations in the bloodstream. Dandelion also acts directly on the pancreas to increase
insulin production. Ci Wu Jia has a regulatory effect on the endocrine system, treating
hyperglycemia among other disorders.

Huperzine A
Indications: (with appropriate presentation): impaired mental acuity, concentration, short and
log-term memory, prevention of Alzheimer‘s and other neurodegenerative disorders
Western Therapeutic Effects
1. Inhibits cholinesterase
2. Increases norepinephrine and dopamine
3. Marked anti-oxidant and neuro-protective properties
4. Slows the breakdown of acetylcholine, a process that accelerates with aging
5. Improves cognitive function by enhancing message delivery between neurons in the brain.
Chinese Therapeutic Effects
1. Invigorates blood stagnation and removes statis
2. Opens the sensory orifices
Suggested Dosage: Take 1 capsule 3 times a day between meals for the first month, then
reduce to 1 capsule twice daily for longer term usage.
Cautions & Contraindications: Use of Huperzine A along with the acetylcholinesterase
inhibitors donepezil or tacrine may produce additive effects, including additive adverse effects. Other
acetylcholinesterase inhibitors include neostigmine, physostigmine and pyridostigmine, and use of these
agents along with Huperzine A may produce additive effects, including additive adverse effects. Use of
Huperzine A along with cholinergic drugs, such as bethanechol, may produce additive effects, including
additive adverse effects.
Formula Notes: Huperzine A is an extract from a club moss that has been used for centuries in
Chinese Herbalism. Huperzine's action has been attributed to its ability to strongly inhibit acetylcholinesterase, the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine in the synaptic cleft. Acetylcholine is involved in
memory and learning. By inhibiting the enzyme that breaks it down, more acetylcholine becomes
available to stimulate neurons. Alzheimer‘s Disease is a condition where there‘s a relative
shortage of acetycholine. Several studies in China and the United States have shown that Huperzine A
is many times more effective and selective than tacrine (a cholinesterase-inhibiting pharmaceutical drug)
in inhibiting cholinesterase. Huperzine A seems to have not only beneficial effects on improvement of
general cognitive function, but also global clinical status, behavioral disturbance and functional
performance, with no obvious serious adverse events for patients with AD.
Yin Go Ye (Ginkgo) oxygenates the blood, increases circulation and strengthens blood vessels. In
recent studies, Yin Guo Ye has been shown to partially reverse memory deficit. The researchers
concluded that Ginkgo can protect the brain against beta-amyloid and the resulting changes that lead to
memory impairment. The study authors believe Ginkgo exerts its benefits through its ability to liberate
acetylcholine. And in study at UCLA, researchers found significant improvement in verbal recall among a
group of people with age-associated memory impairment who took ginkgo for six months, compared to a
group that received a placebo pill. Shan Zha helps to break down fatty deposits in the blood stream,
and along with Dan Shen dilates blood vessels in the brain which has the smallest vessels in the body.

Radiance to create a formula which cleanses and builds the Blood for healthy skin and
luminous complexion. Traditionally, Zhen Zhu or Pearl is said to promote healing and generate
flesh, soften and cool the Liver, and promote the smooth flow of the Blood. It has been used
for centuries in China for its ability to accelerate the regeneration of new skin cells, thus
helping creating a smooth, radiant complexion. Zhen Zhu is a valuable mineral source,
contributing calcium, magnesium, zinc, strontium, selenium and copper, which aid in
supplementing skin and bone vitality. It also contains dozens of amino acids that are
necessary for maintaining health, including eight that cannot be produced by the body.
Clinical Studies have shown that Zhen Zhu promotes the activities of the important natural
antioxidant enzyme SOD, aiding in the prevention of development of melanin which can cause
freckles, dark patches and blemishes on the skin, including pimples and boils. And because
SOD eliminates free radicals, skin aging and wrinkles thus can be partially prevented.
Zhen Zhu also tranquilizes the nerves, and improves sleep,
The variety of fresh flowers used in this formulation have traditional properties that assist in the
skins balance regarding moisture, tone and elasticity. White Peach Flower moistens the lungs,
which in turn hydrates the skin, its natural color and benefiting overall skin luster. Lotus Flower
clears heat and cools the liver, heart, and lungs, which aids in tissue regeneration; hydrates
the skin; helps relieve skin discoloration, uneven pigmentation, and blemishes. White Rose
flower restores liver function by allowing the smooth flow of Liver Qi, aiding in tissue
regeneration and proper hormonal balance. Snow Flower is cool in nature; relieves uneven
skin pigmentation and balances skin tone and moisture.

Red Rice Yeast Plus
Indications: (with appropriate presentation) elevated LDL cholesterol levels, elevated
triglyceride levels
Western Therapeutic Effects
1. Antihyperlipidemic effect to inhibit cholesterol biosynthesis
2. Increase HDL-cholesterol (the ―good‖ cholesterol) levels
3. Reduces triglyceride levels
4. Lowers blood pressure
Chinese Therapeutic Effects
1. Strengthens the Spleen and Stomach to promote digestion
2. Invigorates Blood and eliminates Statis
Suggested Dosage: Take 2-3 capsules in the AM and 4 before bedtime.
Cautions & Contraindications: Active liver disease; Regular use of Red Rice Yeast Plus
should be supplemented with 60 to 90 mg of daily intake of CO Q10 as all statins, including
herbal ones, block CO Q10 metabolism.
Formula Notes: Red Rice Yeast Plus is a combination of herbs that numerous studies have shown
lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels as effectively as the statin drugs, but without the side effects
common to statins. For centuries, Red Rice Yeast (Hong Qu) has been used in China as both a food
and herbal medicine. Following ingestion, monascolin (lovastatin) is converted in the body to
beta
-hydroxy acid, which is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor. This compound inhibits cholesterol
biosynthesis, leading to reduced levels of plasma total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol
(LDL), very-low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL, and triglycerides. In addition, it may produce a
slight increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL), the ―good‖ cholesterol.
Clinical studies have also shown Jiao Gu Lan‘s ability to lower serum cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL
(bad cholesterol), while increasing HDL (good cholesterol). Crude Gypenosides were tested for their
effect on lipid metabolism in rats fed with high-sugar, high-fat diets. It was found that Gypenosides
reduced levels of serum triglycerides, total cholesterol, phospholipids and lipid peroxidation.
In laboratory studies, He Shou Wu increases HDL and lowers LDL and triglycerides. Shan Zha has also
shown marked effectiveness for reduction of plasma cholesterol levels. Dan Shen and Chuan Xiong
dilate blood vessels and lower blood pressure. Dan Shen also exhibits a marked hepatoprotective effect
by lowering liver enzyme levels, due in part to its effect at improving blood circulation and promoting
regeneration of liver cells.

Formula Notes: Thermogen simultaneously addresses the combination of middle jiao deficiency and

and standardized extracts of Zhi Shi (Citrus Aurantium), activates ‗thermogenisis‘, that is, the body‘s
ability to produce heat in the BAT (brown adipose tissue) to burn up excess dietary and stored calories.
It works similarly to Ma Huang, but without any of the harsh side effects. It is assisted here by Rou Gui,
Lu Cha and Sheng Jiang.
Huang Qi, Fu Ling, Bai Zhu and Ci Wu Jia improve the strength and efficiency of the digestive function.
Ci Wu Jia also has a regulatory effect on the endocrine system, specifically the adrenal glands, thyroid
and pancreas. Sha Ren and Hou Po address stagnation of Qi in the middle jiao, while Shan Zha and
Shen Qu dissolve food stagnation. Yu Jin moves stagnant Liver Qi and Pu Gong Yin helps eliminate
toxins released from the adipose tissue during weight loss. Yuan Zhi is added to reduce anxiety and
stress all too common in many cases of unwanted weight gain.

4. Nourishes the Heart and Calms the Shen
Suggested Dosage: Take 2-3 capsules 3 times a day in between meals.
Cautions & Contraindications: None
Formula Notes: Ultimate Replenishment is the ‗ultimate‘ tonic formula for reversing signs of
premature aging as well as promoting longevity. In addition to the herbs in Replenishment, this
formula adds standardized extracts Ling Zhi, He Shou Wu and Gou Qi Zi, and a raw powder of
Dong Chong Xia Cao (Cordyceps). As usual in Blue Dragon formulas, standardized extracts
are used together with the traditional 5 to 10:1 extracts in a base of the whole, ground raw
herb. This ensures that all naturally occurring compounds and volatile oils in the raw herbs are
present in the final product, while considerably enhancing the functions of the formula.
Ling Zhi, called the ‗Mushroom of Immortality‘, has been revered in China and Japan for
centuries. Shen Nong, ranked Ling Zhi as the number one herb for achieving radiant health
and long life. It tonifies Qi, nourishes Blood and calms Shen. Numerous studies have shown
that it enhances immune function, lowers blood pressure and protects the liver.
Dong Chong Xia Cao (Cordyceps) tonifies Kidney Yang and augments JIng. It is famous for its
use by the Chinese Olympians to increase physical strength and endurance. It has both renal
and liver protective effects and strongly enhances immune function. Cordyceps is so effective
because it strengthens the body and Mind at a fundamental level, increasing the primary
motive force for life activities. It replenishes Jing, thus restoring the deep energy expended by
excessive exertion, adapting to stress or from aging.
He Shou Wu treats Blood and Jing deficiencies that result in such signs of premature and
―normal‖ aging as graying hair, declining vision, weak low back and knees, impotence and
lowered sperm count and motility. It is considered one of the best sexual and fertility tonics for
both men and women. He Shou Wu contains many powerful anti-oxidants. It is widely believed
that the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity of He Shou Wu is responsible for its renowned
anti-aging abilities. SOD is an enzyme that repairs cells and reduces the damage done to them
by superoxide, the most common free radical in the body. Studies have shown that SOD acts
as both an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory in the body, neutralizing the free radicals that can
lead to wrinkles and precancerous cell changes. Researchers are currently studying the
potential of superoxide dismutase as an anti-aging treatment, since it is now known that SOD
levels drop while free radical levels increase as we age.

Gou Qi Zi nourishes Kidney and Liver Yin and brightens the eyes. In addition to its traditional
Chinese therapeutic functions, Gou Qi Zi, studies have shown that it lowers blood lipid levels,
lowers blood pressure, raises testosterone levels, prevents fatty liver and improves white blood
cell counts during chemotherapy. It also improves non-specific immunity, increasing phagocytic
activity of the macrophages and the total number of T cells.
