Thursday, August 15, 2013 • Brooklyn Daily Eagle • 1 eview and Comment RDecline in Marriage – It’s the Economy Love and marriage. They’re hitched together, traditionally. But more and more today they’re being forced to lead separate lives. A good marriage can yield all kinds of emotional benefits, including happiness, companionship, and even better health, according to some studies. Marriage also can serve as a strong economic foundation, with each partner supporting the other’s efforts to provide for the family. But a new study suggests another, more detrimental link between money and marriage: Joblessness or other economic insecurity leads to fewer marriages. That not only deprives those individuals of the benefits of marriage, but in a broader context, it deprives society of the benefits of marriage as well. The disappearance of well-paying jobs for America’s working class – those with no more than a high school education – is taking a toll on marriage, a new study says. “Working-class people with insecure work and few resources, little stability, and no ability to plan for a foreseeable future become concerned with their own survival and often become unable to imagine being able to provide materially and emotionally for others,” says Sarah Corse, the study’s lead author. The study, “Intimate Inequalities: Love and Work in a Post-Industrial Landscape,” was presented at a meeting of the American Sociological Association in New York City on Tuesday. Well-paying jobs with benefits and pensions continue to vanish for those who lack college degrees or other post-high school educations as manufacturing jobs fly overseas to lower-wage countries. The recent furor over the low wages paid at fast-food restaurants is a direct result of these missing jobs: Positions that were meant to be staffed by high-schoolers looking for part-time work now are being snapped up by adults trying to feed a family. These minimum-wage jobs provide a kind of low-nutrition, “fast-food income” – enough to fill your stomach for a day or two, but not what you’d want to live on month after month. The trend lines are clear: Marriage is becoming a luxury reserved for the wealthy and well educated. While some 60 percent of U.S. women with a bachelor’s degree are married, for example, less than 30 percent of those who never graduated from high school are. Though U.S. poverty is often associated with minorities, the largest number of poor people in the U.S. are white. “Poverty is no longer an issue of ‘them,’ it’s an issue of ‘us,’” says Mark Rank, a professor at Washington University in St. Louis who has looked at the numbers. “Only when poverty is thought of as a mainstream event, rather than a fringe experience that just affects blacks and Hispanics, can we really begin to build broader support for programs that lift people in need.” The “Love and Work” study also shows that efforts to better educate youths should pay off: Educated middle-class workers were better able to weather the effects of periods of joblessness, the study says. Next week President Obama will continue his summer road trip, taking his message on how to kick start the economy on a bus trip through New York and Pennsylvania. He’s expected to promote, among other proposals, spending on infrastructure, such as roads and bridges, that would boost economic growth and produce middle-class jobs. Republicans will be countering with their own ideas. As the fall debate over how to revive the economy heats up, it’s important to understand everything that’s at stake. Effective efforts to boost the economy can have a less obvious benefit: They will strengthen marriage and, in turn, stabilize society. —The Christian Science Monitor’s Editorial Board Is published daily except Saturdays, Sundays and Federal Holidays by Everything Brooklyn Media, LLC (USPS 971380), located at 16 Court Street, Suite 1208, Brooklyn, NY 11241. The sweeping change, which would put New York at the forefront of a growing national debate over use of the drug, calls for recreational marijuana to be regulated and taxed like alcohol and tobacco. Liu, the city’s top financial officer who is also running for mayor, commissioned a report that finds that New York City has a $1.65 billion marijuana market. If a 20 percent excise tax and the standard 8.875 percent city sales tax is imposed on the pot sales, it would yield $400 million annually in revenue, Liu believes. Another $31 million could be saved a year in law enforcement and court costs. “It is economically and socially just to tax it,” Liu told the Associated Press in an interview Tuesday. “We can eliminate some of the criminal nature that surrounds the drug and obtain revenue from it.” The comptroller’s plan, which likely faces stiff opposition from state lawmakers who would have to authorize it, calls for the state to oversee private businesses selling pot. Licenses would be required, fees would be charged, and using the drug in public or while driving would be prohibited. Liu’s team calculated that 900,000 city pot smokers spend about $2,000 a year on the drug. He is calling for the revenue surge to be used to reduce tuition at the City University of New York for city residents. Twenty states and the District Young Brooklyn Politician... Delegates from 42 states took part in this year’s convention, where participants heard speeches from Julian and Joaquin Castro, twin brothers who are considered rising stars in the Democratic Party. Joaquin is a congressman from Texas, while his twin brother is the mayor of San Antonio. The delegates also elected a slate of officers, including a new president, Atima Omara-Alwala of Virginia, who is the first African-American woman to lead the organization. A New Yorker, Benjamin Yee, was elected first vice president. In addition to the elections, the convention featured floor speeches and workshops, Carroll said. “And there was also a lot of networking,” he said. As a district leader, Carroll is a party official in the Democratic Party in New York State. His official title is state committeeman, meaning that he is a member of the party’s state committee. He was elected to his post two years ago. His fellow convention delegates told him they were impressed by the fact that he was able to get elected to a party position at the age of 24 and asked him many questions about his career in politics. He gladly offered tips on how to run political campaigns. Carroll also brought a unique perspective to the meetings of the convention’s Northeast regional caucus. “People tend to think of New York as strictly a Democratic state. Officials in both states predicted that the change would be create a surge in revenue — up to $60 million annually in Colorado alone, according to supporters there. But while it is too soon to evaluate the exact economic ramifications in those states, experts do believe that the city budget would be bolstered by a similar measure. “Now, people selling the product are doing it under the table and aren’t paying any taxes on it,” said Carl Davis, Senior Analyst at the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy. “That would change. And, it stands to reason, people would also start legally producing it locally, so there would be economic benefits there too.” One of the nation’s leading Grimm (R-C-Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Staten Island). “We have a Republican congressman, but Barack Obama won the district in 2012. I told people that if we could get more Democrats to come to New York to help us campaign, we could get a Democrat elected to that congressional seat.” On the convention floor, the two topics of conversation that generated the most buzz were same-sex marriage and the Trayvon Martin tragedy. “I don’t know if it’s a generational thing, but there was a great deal of support for marriage equality among the delegates. I think young people have moved this issue to the forefront in our country. We talked about the importance of working for marriage equality in all 50 states,” Carroll said. When he wasn’t busy with convention-related activities, Carroll went sightseeing in San Antonio, visiting the Alamo and strolling along the city’s River Walk. ‘It’s a nice city, but it can’t compare to New York,” he said. FROM THE ORIGINAL EAGLE AND OTHER SOURCES BETHEL, NY — A “Technicolor, mud-splattered reflection of the 1960s,” as folk singer Joan Baez called it, the Woodstock Music and Art Fair was the youth movement’s seminal event, representative in many ways of the decade itself — at once defiant, innocent, optimistic, and indulgent. More than 400,000 young people flocked to the three-day festival — August 15 to17, 1969 — on a farm in upstate New York, and despite torrential rains, insufficient facilities, and countless drug mishaps, most took away memories that would achieve the status of near-myth. The brainchild of a group of young promoters and investors who called themselves Woodstock Ventures, Inc., the event (it actually occurred in the town of Bethel, not Woodstock) was billed as “three days of peace and music.” Among the folk and rock heroes who played with Baez were Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; The Who; Janis Joplin; Jimi Hendrix; Sly and the Family Stone; Jefferson Airplane; and Santana. Brooklyn-born Arlo Guthrie was there too. All that filmmaker Michael Wadleigh had to do was circulate his massive camera crew around the field to create a documentary with the epic sweep of social history. The shootings were edited by Martin Scorsese in the 184-minute Woodstock. The film caught the spirit of the thing and won the Oscar for 1970’s Best Documentary. For many of the student activists, leftists, pot heads, professors, hippies, and Yippies who made the trip to Max Yasgu’s farm (rented for the occasion), Woodstock was “a coming together of all the tribes,” an overtly political event. Later, as the legend grew, it assumed ever richer meaning. At the “Chicago 8” trial for conspiracy to incite a riot at the 1968 Democratic Convention, defendant Abby Hoffman told the judge he was not an American — he was a member of the Woodstock Nation, “a nation of alienated young people.” By the time “Woodstock ‘94” was held 25 years later (50 miles from the original site), the event had been transmuted into certifiable baby-boom legend. The Cyclones’ left-hander reliever yielded two runs, including a game-tying solo homer, in the bottom of the ninth inning Tuesday night at Norwich’s Dodd Stadium as the NL All-Stars suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to their AL rivals in the New York-Penn League’s annual Late-Summer Classic. Mazzilli, the son of former Mets great Lee Mazzilli and a Connecticut native, had helped spark the junior circuit to a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth inning. New York’s 2013 fourth-round pick out of the University of Connecticut reached first on an error with two out in the eighth before rounding the bases with the tying run on a series of wild pitches by Staten Island reliever Stefan Lopez. Batavia’s Felix Munoz followed with a clutch RBI single later in the frame as the NL jumped in front. Jamestown set-up man Roberto Espinosa tossed a 1-2-3 eighth, setting the stage for Mincone, Brooklyn’s All-Star southpaw, to close out the win for the NL, which would have given the senior circuit a 5-4 lead in the alltime series. Clearly flustered, Mincone then uncorked a wild pitch to move the runners to second and third before catching a break when Williamsport’s Zach Green fielded a grounder and fired home to nail Verlander, temporarily quelling the AL’s winning rally. Hudson Valley’s Oscar Hernandez hit a potential double-play grounder to short that Valera pitched to Mazzilli for the second out of the inning, but the former Huskie and future Met couldn’t turn two as Bautista came racing home for the walk-off win and ensuing celebration. Mazzilli, who didn’t start the game, gushed prior to the game about what a circuitous rout his budding career has taken. Hynes on Wednesday announced the indictment of Cornell Poyser, 40, an assistant manager of a TJ Maxx outlet in Oceanside, Long Island, who allegedly stole merchandise from the store after it was closed. Investigators found that Poyser was renting a store in East Flatbush, where he unloaded, displayed and sold what he had stolen from the national chainstore. The Brooklyn store featured clothing, luggage, shoes perfume and other goods, all from TJ Maxx, according to the indictment. Even the knock-off store’s display racks were from the large retailer. “Many people dream of starting their own business, but almost all realize that this takes time, hard work and money for inventory. But Cornell Poyser, an assistant manager at a TJ Maxx outlet located in Oceanside in Nassau County, didn’t want to wait. So he found a quicker way,” said Hynes. Poyser’s alleged theft came to light earlier this year, when TJ Maxx conducted an audit that revealed the Oceanside store’s sales volume was far below the inventory being shipped to the store. TJ Maxx assigned their internal investigators to look into the matter. Store security videos from May 2013 showed Poyser removing boxes and bags of merchandise from the back of the store, according to the D.A.’s Office. Over the next few weeks, the investigators CORNELL POYSER, CHARGED WITH GRAND larceny and related crimes. conducted surveillance and reportedly observed Poyser taking more items out of the backdoor of the Oceanside TJ Maxx and placing them into a minivan. Investigators said they followed Poyser as he allegedly drove his minivan to a store located at 5324 Church Ave. in East Flatbush and then unloaded the stolen merchandise. According to the indictment, the defendant had been renting the store for about one year. Poyser reportedly sold the stolen goods at a large discount. According to the indictment, a pair of shoes with a TJ Maxx price sticker of $129.99 was sold in Poyser’s store for $50. Detectives executed a search warrant at the store in East Flatbush on the morning of Aug. 9. During a search of the basement, investigators found items that had TJ Maxx security tags attached, which required a special device to remove. The device, which was missing from the Oceanside store, was found in the basement of the Brooklyn store. It is estimated that the merchandise found in the minivan and in the Brooklyn store totaled $130,000, according to the D.A.’s Office. In addition, a preliminary investigation revealed that no Certificate of Authority, which would alert the state of the store’s existence for the purpose of collecting sales tax, was filed with New York state. Poyser is charged with grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property and related crimes. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison. Brooklyn Supreme Court Interns Participate in Mock Trial By Charisma L. Miller, Esq. Brooklyn Daily Eagle The attorneys filed into the courtroom followed by their clients, witnesses and spectators. All rose when Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Gloria Dabiri entered the courtroom and took her seat that on the bench. It was a seemingly normal day in the Brooklyn courtroom except the lawyers, the clients and the witness — all players in the trial — were student interns taking part in a simulated or mock trial exercise. It was clear that the students took the exercise seriously and had prepared their arguments and rebuttals. The issue at hand was bullying, and the case questioned whether or not a public school is liable for the over-aggressive taunting of one student. Student attorneys questioned school rules and parties’ motivations and tackled expert witnesses. The students were able to grasp complicated evidentiary issues, such as hearsay objections and exceptions. For concepts they were unclear of, Justice Dabiri gently explained the rule and guided them as they applied the rule to the argument being presented to the court. The students’ hard work and preparation clearly paid off. 320 Jay St., Brooklyn Hon. Goldberg pretrial, attempted murder ∆Elijah Foster-Bey Hon. Miller, Esq. Brooklyn Daily Eagle Manhattan attorney Yves-Merry Telemaque, 49, has been accused of stealing funds from the elderly ward whose interest she was charged to protect. The Queens District Attorney’s Office has charged Telemaque with grand larceny for allegedly stealing over $50,000 in real estate proceeds from Cleo Veal, the ward whom Telemaque was responsible for. Telemaque, a graduate of Brooklyn Law School, was appointed as Veal’s guardian in 2007. When Veal died in November 2008, Telemaque was ordered to place the $311,597 in proceeds from the sale of Veal’s real estate into her Interest on Lawyer Account (IOLA) — a fund whereby the interest earned on attorney accounts is given to financially support legal aid societies and other organizations that provide legal services to the underprivileged. The D.A.’s Office alleges Telemaque made a number of impermissible withdrawals from the IOLA account in excess of $50,000. “[Telemaque] was appointed by the court to look after the financial affairs of a person incapable of doing so for herself,” said Queens D.A. Richard Brown. “It is unacceptable that [Telemaque] then allegedly took the deceased’s money for her own use.” Telemaque, represented by the firm Clinton Calhoun of Calhoun & Lawrence of White Plains, was arraigned in Queens Criminal Court in Kew Gardens. She faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
