WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
Warm clothes, gloves, and long pants are
essential. Tall socks that cover the ankle must be
worn with rental skates. Helmets are strongly
recommended for beginner skaters.
WHERE DO I GO BEFORE CLASS?
Please arrive 30 minutes before class time to
check in and put skates on. On the first day of
class, you’ll be given your enrollment card, firstday class sticker, and further information.
Snowplow 1, Basic 1, and Adult 1 please attend
Newcomer Orientation 30 minutes before first
class! Each week thereafter, check in with your
enrollment card at the cashier counter, and pick
up sticker for class attendance. Skaters without
stickers or with stickers from previous classes will
be asked to leave the ice to obtain the appropriate
class sticker.
WHEN DO I GRADUATE?
Skaters are tested at the end of each 8-week
session to determine future class levels. Some
skills take more than 8 weeks to master.
Completion of a session does not guarantee
promotion to next class level. Promotion is based
on proficiency of required skills to help ensure
safety and preparedness to learn new skills.
FAQs
DO I HAVE TO BUY MY OWN SKATES?
Rental skates are fine for beginners, but as you
advance, the support and consistency of your own
skates will enhance your progress. We
recommend purchasing your own skates at the
Basic 3-4/Adult 2-3 level. The elements learned at
those levels and beyond require more support and
edge control than rental skates usually provide.
Our pro shop is ready to help you buy your own
skates. If your fitting demands special attention,
custom fitting is available for $20 (applicable to
the purchase of skates from Chaparral). Skaters in
Pre-Free Skate and above and On-Ice Specialty
Classes must be in their own skates!
SHOULD I PRACTICE OR TAKE PRIVATES?
Skaters who practice regularly outside of class
progress faster! Practice is even more effective
when spread throughout the week, rather than all
on class day. We strongly encourage skaters to
take advantage of passes and discounts to come
practice on our daily public sessions.
Private lessons are a great idea for skaters who
may be having trouble mastering skills or who
desire to compete. For more information, contact
Kathy Goeke, Figure Skating Program Manager, at
512-252-5800 ext. 125, [email protected].
