Repel (verb)
Hindi Translation: विकर्षण करना
Meaning: Drive something away
Memory Tip: Mosquito Repellent repels (drives away) mosquitoes
Use in Sentence: She was repelled by his chauvinist attitude and decided to break
off the engagement.
Clench (noun, verb)
Hindi translation: जकड़ना
Meaning: Tightly grab hold of something OR Make something tight
Memory Tip: Clench (rhymes with clutch) → Before you hit the sudden
brake, you will clench the clutch of the car with your foot.
Use in Sentence: The second Jiten saw Ramu walk his way, he became so angry
that he clenched his fist to start punching Ramu.
Tepid (adjective)
Hindi translation: गुनगुना OR उत्साहहीन
Meaning: Lukewarm (not too hot, not cold) OR Showing little enthusiasm
Memory Tip: Te + Pid → Tea + Dip → You can dip your hand in the tea
only if it is not too hot i.e. if it is tepid.
Use in Sentence: The director’s big budget movie, while not a complete flop, only
received a tepid response from the fans.
Abate (verb)
Hindi translation: न्यून होना
Meaning: Reduce or make something less intense
Memory Tip: Ab + Ate → अब जब (Now that) I ate, my hunger did abate.
Use in Sentence: I really wanted to go to Khandala this weekend, but the rains just
wouldn’t abate.
Clock (verb)
Hindi translation: दजष करना
Meaning: Attain or register (a specified time, distance or speed)
Memory Tip: A clock registers time. So when you clock 12 hours of sleep,
that means you slept for 12 hours of sleep.
Use in Sentence: The worker was given a gold-plated watch for clocking up fifty
years of dedicated service.
