MASTER COURSE OUTLINE A. MEDA1150 Clinical Procedures for Medical Assistants B. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is the clinical core curriculum for medical assistant students. The fundamentals of the clinical aspect of medical assisting and performance of basic clinical skills is covered. Course content includes communication and professionalism, therapeutic communication, developmental and age appropriate care, medical asepsis, the medical assistant’s role in assisting the health care provider with medical exams and clinical procedures, appropriate documentation, surgical asepsis and sterile procedures, wound care, physical therapy; specialty care including obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, gastroenterology, urology, and male reproductive health are studied. The student performs specific skills related to the above areas of study. The basic principles of respiratory diagnostic testing, radiology, emergency preparedness, and medical coding are also covered. Review of first semester laboratory skills for externship preparation are also included. Prerequisites: It is recommended that HCCC1400 Body Structure, Function, and Applied Terminology as well as MEDA1301 Laboratory Procedures be taken before or concurrently with this class.
