Liturgy Notes
RECEPTION OF COMMUNION
AT ST. JOSEPH CHURCH
This year past year the Parish Liturgy Committee has been reviewing and updating the procedures for the various
liturgical ministries for Sunday masses at St. Joseph Church (eg. lectors, ushers, etc.). As part of those discussions, the
flow pattern of those coming forward to receive the Body and Blood of Christ was examined. As a result, we believe
that a shift in the flow pattern for the reception of Holy Communion will benefit our celebration of the Eucharist.
Below is a diagram that indicates the changes in the flow of the pattern that we will begin next weekend, February 25th
and 26th. Basically as the arrows indicate, we will be using three aisles for approaching the altar to receive the Body
and Blood of Christ and four aisles to return to our seats in the pews. Thus we will no longer have people processing up
and back in the same aisle. We ask that you follow the direction of the ushers next weekend as you come forward to
receive Holy Communion; and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation concerning this change.
Ash Wednesday is on March 1 ushering in the
season of Lent. In preparation for the celebration of
our Ash Wednesday liturgies parishioners once again
are invited to return blessed palm. This palm will be
burned and the ashes used for our liturgies on Ash
Wednesday. Receptacles will be available in both
churches and the parish office until Sunday,
February 26. Palm must be returned by this date. To
assist us in preparing to burn the palm, please remove
any staples, paperclips or rubber bands.
Ash Wednesday Liturgies are scheduled as indicated
below:
8:30 AM Mass in St. Joseph Church
Noon Liturgy of the Word & Distribution of Ashes
in St. Joseph Church
7:00 PM Mass in St. Joseph Church
7:00 PM Mass in St. Rose of Lima Church
LENTEN FAST AND ABSTINENCE
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are
obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for
Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent
are obligatory days of abstinence. When
fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full
meal on the specific day. Two smaller meals
may also be taken, but not equal to a full
meal. The rules of fasting are obligatory
only from age 18 until age 59. The
requirement to abstain from meat is binding
upon those 14 and older.
The Word in Our Lives:
Readings for February 26, 2017
8th Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading: Isaiah 49:14-15
Zion said, "The LORD has forsaken me; my LORD has forgotten me." Can a mother forget her infant, be
without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget you.
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 62:2-3, 6-7, 8-9
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 4:1-5
Brothers and sisters:
Thus should one regard us: as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Now it is of course
required of stewards that they be found trustworthy. It does not concern me in the least that I be judged by
you or any human tribunal; I do not even pass judgment on myself; I am not conscious of anything against
me, but I do not thereby stand acquitted; the one who judges me is the Lord. Therefore do not make any
judgment before the appointed time, until the Lord comes, for he will bring to light what is hidden in darkness
and will manifest the motives of our hearts, and then everyone will receive praise from God.
Gospel: Matthew 6:24-34
Jesus said to his disciples:
"No one can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise
the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you
will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than
clothing? Look at the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns, yet your
heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you more important than they? Can any of you by worrying add a single
moment to your life-span? Why are you anxious about clothes? Learn from the way the wild flowers grow.
They do not work or spin. But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of
them. If God so clothes the grass of the field, which grows today and is thrown into the oven tomorrow, will
he not much more provide for you, O you of little faith? So do not worry and say, 'What are we to eat?' or
'What are we to drink?'or 'What are we to wear?' All these things the pagans seek. Your heavenly Father
knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things
will be given you besides. Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a
day is its own evil."
La Palabra en Nuestra Vidas:
26 De Febrero De 2017
VIII Domingo Ordinario
¿Acaso no
¿Acaso no valen ustedes

"I establish my covenant with you." (Genesis 9:11)
God's covenant with Noah was a solemn promise. Talk
with your child today about what it means to make a
promise. Is it ever OK to break a promise?
MARRIAGE MOMENTS
A good marriage is not recognized by the absence of
conflict, but the presence of peacemaking. One sign of
a healthy marital relationship is the desire of a
husband and wife to seek unity when there are
disagreements and differences.

VOCATIONS REFLECTION
In today’s gospel reading, Jesus says to his disciples
“Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go
for two miles. Give to the one who asks of you.” What
if the One pressing you into service is God? Could He
be asking you to serve His people as a priest, a deacon,
or a religious sister or brother? If you think that might
be the case, feel welcome to contact Father Norm
Carroll, Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious
Vocations (302-573-3113, [email protected]).
Don’t forget to visit our website: www.cdow.org/
vocations!
ROSARY AT BROADMEADOW
The Rosary is prayed each Wednesday at 11:00 AM at
Broadmeadow Nursing Home. Any parishioner is
welcome to attend and participate. We are also in need
of people to lead the rosary. If you are able to help
please call Helen Gaden at 302-376-0711.
In the Gospel of Matthew we
find Jesus calling us to go
beyond the laws of the Old
Testament and into a greater
understanding of these laws. We all have heard the
phrase turn the other cheek, and for many of us we
have repeated this spreading Christ message to others.
But how many of us can say we have lived this and in
those moments of anger or frustration have been able
to truly turn the other cheek? This week contemplate
what it truly means to turn the other cheek and to love
your enemy. How can you apply this teaching in a
practical manner? Brainstorm some ideas because
while the theory is simple the application is difficult.
