Moosecalac 2013 – The Super Bowl Party from Hell

Moosecalac 2013 – The Super Bowl Party from Hell
By the time most people are reading this, the kick off for Moosecalac 2013 will be less than two weeks away.
The “Kick Off” analogy is somewhat appropriate because as I write this article, I have just returned from a
Super Bowl Party hosted by former Newfie Bullets and current AV Terrace Bay GM Mikko Koivisto (more about
that somewhat torturous evening a little later). The weekend schedule is all but complete and will be on the
website this weekend. As always there are plenty of activities for all ages. Of course with any Winter Carnival
comes lots of food concessions and Moosecalac is no different. Things get started on Friday night with the
French Canadian Supper and Moosecalac Bazaar. A new event that was added a few years ago is the Longlac
Sno-Club Spaghetti Supper at the curling club on Sunday night. This is a great way to wind down with a great
supper and an evening of entertainment. Of course the canteen services at the arena provided by Derek and
the TNT crew are second to none and they’re open all weekend. So if it’s 4:00 AM and you can’t sleep and are
dreaming of a double bacon cheese burger drop by the arena. There’s a good chance that you can see Curtis
Forbes and his Longlac Pizzeria team in action.
The action around the hockey tournament is heating up as usual. The topic on most peoples’ minds of course is
the hockey schedule. The big question is whether the Newfie Bullets streak will continue. It defies all known
laws of probability but as most of you are aware, the Newfie Bullets have not played a late night or early
morning game in 19 years. Well that’s not exactly true, there was one year when they had game at 11:00 on
Saturday morning. Considering that everything is done completely randomly makes this streak even more
unbelievable. Please note that due the actions of Dalton McGuinty against us hard done by teachers, I have
decided to change things up a little bit this year. I am open to bribes or gifts of persuasion of any kind (Just
keep it quiet, I don’t want everybody to know). Be creative, I have many needs.
More on the night from hell (other wise known as Mikko’s Super Bowl party) with Mikko and the Albert
brothers (Pat and Jeremy). These guys take their over the hill beer league hockey pretty seriously. Believe me, I
heard it all that night, line match-ups, power play, penalty kill, no sex before games (some were in favour, some
weren’t, and some have no choice). As nauseating as the conversations was, I couldn’t help but eavesdrop in
my never ending search for juicy gossip. Most notable among the concerns of Mikko, Pat, and Jeremy was
whether their fellow teammates were up for the challenge. I mean not everyone is plugged full of testosterone
like these guys and some actually just enjoy participating. They are particularly concerned about how “battle
ready” the Garon brothers (Steph and Francis) are. Too old, too slow, too soft, lost their edge were some of the
things I heard (Actually I didn’t hear anything but it’s very late so I had to make something up). Pat “Fluffy”
Albert wants to make a trade with the Longlac Pizzeria for his idol, Kevin Lemieux but Mikko and Jeremy aren’t
prepared to share the glory with anyone else, let alone someone so much better than they are. The deal is not
finalized although some reports say they are close. I figure split the difference and make the deal, what’s an
extra roll of Duct Tape between friends. The other interesting thing I heard was how efficient this team plans to
be. Pat is adamant that shifts should be about 30 seconds and no longer than 45 seconds. Mikko kind of floats
so he’s in favour of 2 or 3 minute shifts so he can fix his hair, straighten his jersey, and have time to check out
who’s in the stands. Either way, it’s none of my business but if I was only going to get 2 or 3 shifts a game, I’d
deep six the 30 second thing and pull a Ron Miron. Once I got on the ice, I’d be stayin’ there until someone
dragged me off.
That’s about it from here. Stay tuned for more news and notes next week. We’ll have some news are our fund
raising objectives.
