President Bob - State of the Nation address
Bob was born and schooled in Adelaide. He
began work in the whitegoods industry after
leaving school and eventually joined the family
business manufacturing sporting goods. He was
studying at Adelaide Uni resulting in an economics
degree and membership as a CPA. Oliver sporting
goods moved into a new factory in 1968 and was
subsequently bought out by a top US company. In
its height the company sold around 97,000 rackets
per year. Bob continued to work for the company
for 12 years before the parent company closed the
factory during a worldwide downturn. Bob and
Joan subsequently purchased parts of the original
business and continued importing and selling
sporting goods until 2003 when they sold their
business and moved to the South East. Bob and
Joan have 2 daughters , one in Adelaide and one
in Bali and 5 grandchildren.
Bob told of his early sports career which was
replaced by his fishing interests and memberships
in Game fishing associations in SA and Pt
McDonnell.
Bob joined the Rotary Club of Adelaide West in
1968 and became President in 1973/1974. Bob
has served as Assistant Governor, District
Vocational Services Committee and the Bridging
Gap training organisation,
Bob has been in Lakes Rotary for more than 12
years and is also a member of Beef Steak and
Burgandy, Secretary of the UFS chemist. He
enjoys reading, gardening and travel.
Bob outlined his hopes for lakes rotary continuing
committee meetings on the 1st Monday of the
month followed by board meeting the following
week. Club Assemblies are planned quarterly and
he aims for our meeting to start and finish on time.
Induction meetings should be notified to members
to allow partners/spouses to attend.
In true accountant terms Bob discussed about
balancing the clubs budgets. Excluding the Fun
Run, Carols and Aussie Day breakfast our level of
annual donations needs to match the funds raised
by the club. Committees need to prioritize their
expenditure and identify was to raise funds.
