Sunday, February 26, 2017 Last Sunday after the Epiphany Welcome to the Church of Christ the King! Whether you are a long-time member of the parish or are with us for the first time, we are very glad you are here! Please join us for refreshments and fellowship in the Undercroft following the service, and introduce yourself to someone you do not know. BCP page numbers refer to the red Book of Common Prayer; page numbers in parentheses refer to the German/English edition of the BCP available at the entrance. The service music (noted with “S” and found in the front part of the hymnal) and hymn numbers refer to the blue Hymnal 1982. For children (up to age 3), we have a crèche with adult supervision in a dedicated room downstairs in the Undercroft. If you wish to avail yourself of this crèche, one of our ushers will be happy to show you the way to it. Please feel free to participate in this service as you find best nurtures your faith in God. Different Christians find that various gestures, postures, silence, words, music and languages help them to be open to the presence of God, whom we know as our Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer. As you enter the church, please follow our practice of keeping silence to prepare our hearts for worship. To that end, please turn off all mobile electronic devices before the service. The Service of Holy Eucharist Gathering for Worship Prelude Praeambulum Primum Joseph Haydn Welcome Processional Hymn: Hymn 137 O wondrous type ! O vision fair The Liturgy of the Word Opening Acclamation All standing, the Presider says People Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen. Collect for Purity Still standing, all say together Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Still standing, all sing the Song of Praise and pray the Collect. Gloria Hymnal S-278 Collect of the Day Presider People Presider The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O God, who before the passion of your only begotten Son revealed his glory upon the holy mountain: Grant to us that we, beholding by faith the light of his countenance, may be strengthened to bear our cross, and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Please be seated. First Reading Exodus 24:12-18 The Lord said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain, and wait there; and I will give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction.” So Moses set out with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. To the elders he had said, “Wait here for us, until we come to you again; for Aaron and Hur are with you; whoever has a dispute may go to them.” Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. The glory of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the cloud. Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. Moses entered the cloud, and went up on the mountain. Moses was on the mountain for forty days and forty nights. Reader People The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please remain seated. Psalm (Choir) Psalm 99 See also see BCP, Page 728 The Lord is King, be the people never so unpatient: he sitteth between the cherubims, be the earth never so unquiet. The Lord is great in Sion: and high above all people. They shall give thanks unto thy Name: which is great, wonderful, and holy. The King's power loveth judgement; thou hast prepared equity: thou hast executed judgement and righteousness in Jacob. O magnify the Lord our God: and fall down before his footstool, for he is holy. Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among such as call upon his Name: these called upon the Lord, and he heard them. He spake unto them out of the cloudy pillar: for they kept his testimonies, and the law that he gave them. Thou heardest them, O Lord our God: thou forgavest them, O God, and punishedst their own inventions. O magnify the Lord our God, and worship him upon his holy hill: for the Lord our God is holy. Second Reading 2 Peter 1:16-21 We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain. So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Please stand. Gradual Hymn: Hymn 134 Holy Gospel Presider People O Light of Light, Love given birth Matthew 17:1-9 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!” When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Get up and do not be afraid.” And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, “Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.” Presider People The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sermon The Ven. Colin Williams Archdeacon of the Church of England Please stand. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and forever. Amen. The Blessing of the Season May the eternal, creative and life-giving Word of God enlighten your mind and enkindle your heart, so that God’s life and love shine through you as a light to the world; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you, and remain with you always. Amen. Parish Announcements Recessional Hymn: Hymn 135 Songs of thankfulness and praise Dismissal Presider People Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God. See Christoph Herpel or Rebecca Hübner for tickets or information – and come join the fun on Tuesday! Make a Great Start to a Holy Lent at our Ecumenical Ash Wednesday Evening ! This Wednesday, March 1 19:30 Service – Preceded by Soup Supper at the Church of Sweden (An der Wolfsweide 54, 60435 Frankfurt) This year, the Church of Sweden is hosting our bilingual (mostly English/some German) ecumenical service, beginning at 19:30. Our Swedish brothers and sisters invite you to come after 18:00, enjoy a bowl of soup and fresh bread to break your Ash Wednesday fast, and get to know their members. Our Choir members will join members of the choirs of the Church of Finland and the Church of Sweden for this service. Fr. John will assist The Rev. Torvild Evensson (Pastor of the Church of Sweden, presiding) and The Rev. Hanna Savukoski (Pastor of the Church of Finland, preaching). This Lent: Nurture Your Spiritual Life with God´s Love! Since we are “marked as Christ’s own” in Holy Baptism, what are the “marks of love” that characterize the Divine Life abiding and at work within us? The Brothers of the Episcopal Society of St. John the Evangelist – in partnership with the Virginia Theological Seminary – have designed this year´s Lenten program: “5 Marks of Love”. This program will help each of us to explore the 5 Anglican Marks of Mission, as we engage with the ways that God´s love expresses itself in and through us. This program has been designed to enable all our adult – and mature teen – members to participate, no matter how distant they live from our church building. To take part, all you have to do is to subscribe now to the free daily video email at this page: ssje.org/ssje/5marksoflove/. While you are at that website, you can also download the free workbook for “5 Marks of Love”. On your own schedule, you can watch these videos and meditate on their reflection questions. If you wish to meet and discuss them with fellow parishioners, Fr. John is happy to facilitate small-group conversations in our Chapel from 9:45 to 10:30 on the first three Sundays in Lent (March 5 th, 12th and 19th). To prepare, he needs to hear from you – no later than today – that you will take part. The Marks of Love are not simply a list of tasks to be checked off one after the other; they are signs that our life is rooted and grounded in the Being of God. The SSJE Brothers are drawing on their own monastic spirituality to help us balance action with contemplation, so that our words and deeds proceed from the deepest places of our hearts, where God dwells. This Lenten resource encourages us to reflect on how we may truly live.
