HELPING PEOPLE HELP THEMSELVES SPRING 2017 FROM A NEW BATTERY TO A NEW HOME … THROUGH A RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS D uring the first week of January, Medford experienced the worst snowstorm and hard freezing temperatures since 1919. Disabled veteran Derell and his girlfriend, Jen, had been living in and out of motel rooms for over nine months. When the coldest months of the year hit, they found themselves living out of his truck. To make matters worse, the battery went out in his truck, and Derell could not afford a new one. With the truck being their only source of warmth and transportation, his girlfriend suggested he contact the ACCESS Support Services for Veterans Families (SSVF) Program. This is where they connected with ACCESS Community Support Specialist Dave Fulton. Derell had already been in touch with St. Vincent de Paul and Rogue Valley Veterans & Community Outreach (RVVCO) for housing, but he needed immediate Another Bountiful Year in 2016 T assistance. Although Dave was unable to instantly house the couple, as a veteran himself, he felt it was imperative he pursue all possible resources to help them. “It is truly important to me that the community is able to see how easy it is to help a veteran or anyone in need,” says Dave. Continues on page 5 HIGHLIGHTS THIS ISSUE •• Notes from Executive Director he Food Share Gardens continue to exemplify the extraordinary bounty that can grow out of many individual seeds of kindness. In 2016, garden managers, supervisors, and helpers maintained four beautiful gardens, contributing over 2,300 hours of their labor and love to grow 29,511 pounds of organic produce for our Food Share Pantries. We benefited from an additional 396 hours of help from the Mormon Elders, AT&T/Direct TV employees, Amy’s Kitchen employees, Rogue Adventist Academy students, UTurn4Christ participants, Marriott Towne Place Suite employees, North Medford Campus Life youth, Regence employees, Rogue Credit Union employees, and St. Mary’s School students. We are inspired by the enthusiasm of our volunteers and are deeply grateful to everyone willing to get their hands dirty this past year! •• New Coordinator for Rogue Valley Food System Network The gardens also flourished thanks to generous donations of materials and supplies from Brad Youngs Construction, Nan King, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Demmer, Rogue Compost, WalMart, and Chris Cline. It is an honor to be able to thank our donors, who have continually shown support for the community we serve. I am moved by their expression of kindness through such strong financial support of the organization. We could not do what we do without that generosity and ongoing commitment to people in need. It has also been an honor to collaborate with and get to know the amazing ACCESS team and engaged board members, all of whom work together to help those we serve. I am filled with gratitude and awe at being part of this wonderful cause. I also see an opportunity to make ACCESS an employer of choice for our team members by ensuring our culture is the best it can be. We strive to efficiently offer services within our mission, helping as many people in our community as possible. I welcome this opportunity to make a difference going forward and to help run this organization effectively. Together, we aim to be the best stewards of our grants and donors’ generous gifts. As we envision the future of ACCESS, we look forward to working collaboratively with our community partners, engaging in dialogue on how to best offer services, and advocating at the state and federal levels to ensure we have the necessary funding to offer the best possible care to this region. I look forward to partnering with YOU to make all of this happen. Please call me at (541) 779-6691 if you want to help make a difference in the lives of those we serve. I look forward to talking with you! ACCESS Executive Director FOOD SYSTEM PARTNERSHIP APPOINTS NEW COORDINATOR T he Rogue Valley Food System Network (RVFSN) has appointed Regan Emmons as its new coordinator. This group comprises local individuals, organizations, and businesses in Jackson and Josephine Counties who collaborate to strengthen our regional food system. ACCESS has been the fiscal sponsor and a major partner in the network since its formation in 2013. Regan’s responsibilities include connecting with partners and community members throughout the Rogue Valley. She is also involved in ACCESS Nutrition programs such as the Cooking Skills program and Mobile Healthy Food Pantry. Regan is already working with the Josephine County Food Bank to establish a new Cooking Skills program for the Josephine County food pantries. Prior to making the Rogue Valley her new home, Regan spent seven years performing food system work in Flagstaff, Arizona. She obtained a master’s degree at Northern Arizona University, where she explored the economics of affordable backyard gardening. Regan also managed a Community Supported Agriculture project; conducted research on farmers and ranches; implemented school garden education and planning; and worked for a variety of other volunteer organizations interested in making sure healthy food was available to the whole community. Welcome, Regan! MEDICAL EQUIPMENT HELPS WOMAN LIVE LIFE WITH DIGNITY A few years ago, local resident Margaret Dials realized her mother-in-Law, Edna Hauser, was beginning to experience physical problems. In her mid-eighties at the time, Edna suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, which rapidly worsened and made daily activities difficult. She was highly independent and did not want help, nor could she afford medical equipment. Unfortunately, Edna started falling regularly, and she would have to wait until her family could drive from Gold Hill to her Medford home to help her. An optimistic woman, Edna was not about to give up! Margaret knew Edna needed medical equipment but faced the challenge of convincing Edna to accept it. Margaret explains, “Hospice would normally order the items my mother-in-law needed, but she wasn’t ready for hospice yet.” ACCESS was able to loan Edna a wheelchair, shower chair, and commode. Edna was thankful to learn she could use the equipment as long as necessary—for FREE! A complicated situation turned into a positive experience. “It made the end of her life easier for the entire family. We returned the equipment to ACCESS, plus donated more after she eventually had to go through hospice,” Margaret notes. If you or a loved one is in need of medical equipment or would like to donate durable medical equipment (see our website for current list), please call (541) 779-6691, ext. 305. Cash donations are also extremely helpful for supplementing needs and maintaining the equipment. As a member of Soroptimist International of North Valley, Margaret has been attending meetings at the Olsrud Family Nutrition Building at ACCESS for over eleven years. She recalled hearing about our free Medical Equipment Program, which got her thinking about another way to help her mother-in-law. “When I called ACCESS’s Medical Equipment office, the process was very simple,” Margaret says. “I explained the situation and provided my contact information. The employee was very friendly and knowledgeable. He knew what we needed before we did!” THE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT PROGR AM is open Monday through Friday from noon to 4 pm. ACCESS is located at 3630 Aviation Way in Medford (behind Costco). 3 ACCESS Down Payment Assistance Helps New Homeowners L ast year, ACCESS administered funding to thirty-six first-time homebuyers to be used toward the purchase of their homes—at a total of over $260,000 in funding! This could not have occurred without our generous donors and their programs, which include: Wells Fargo: Welcome Home Down Payment Assistance Program Oregon Association of Realtors/Rogue Valley Association of Realtors: HOME Foundation First-Time Homebuyers Assistance Program Oregon Housing and Community Services Homeownership Down Payment Assistance Program All grants are used toward down payment and closing costs. One grateful recipient shares, “Buying this home ranks as one of my life’s biggest challenges, and I could not have done it without ACCESS. I would not be where I am today—in this warm and comfortable home—were it not for the support and hard work of many individuals who helped me along my path to homeownership. ACCESS played an essential role in this endeavor. I owe a wealth of gratitude to ACCESS.” —Kelly G. For more information, call Elisha Boyle at (541) 774-4305 or email at [email protected]. “Supporting the Welcome Home Down Payment Assistance Program allows Wells Fargo to support and give back to our community, the community that my team members live and work in. This assistance program allows people to purchase a home when they might otherwise be unable to do so. I treasure the awesome relationship that we have built with ACCESS and the impact together that we are having on helping people purchase their homes!!!” —Kim Katic, Community Banking District Manager GREYSTONE COURT FOOD DRIVE HELPS FEED THE HUNGRY D uring the winter, it is easy to get wrapped up in our own holiday rush and forget it is sometimes the smallest of gifts—like having food on the table— that mean so much. Thank you to everyone who came by to see the beautiful light displays at Greystone Court and brought a donation of food or cash to help hungry families. Thanks to a $5,000 matching gift from Asante, we raised $12,263 and received 6,450 pounds of food. 4 “We can’t thank the residents of Greystone Court (and Santa, too) enough for all they do for us, including standing outside on those cold, wet nights to greet visitors and collect donations. The donations received will help provide more than 56,400 meals for those facing hunger across Jackson County,” says ACCESS Nutrition Director Philip Yates. We also want to extend a special thank-you to Radio Medford for their live remotes and promotional support as well as to The Human Bean for the hot chocolate. See you next year! SHOEBOX DONATIONS BRING HOLIDAY JOY T his holiday season, ACCESS delivered more than 1,750 wrapped shoeboxes to seniors and people with disabilities in Jackson County— surpassing last year’s record of more than 1,400! Each recipient got a specially wrapped box full of household or personal items during the week of Christmas. At least fifty volunteers and staff helped deliver the boxes all the way up until Christmas Eve. Rogue Valley Association of Realtors exceeded their personal goal by donating 288 shoeboxes this year. Way to go! “I think I get more out of delivering the presents than the recipients do when I see their smiles,” says one volunteer. A special thank-you goes out to all of the donors, volunteers, local businesses, churches, and organizations that made this project such a success. Thanks go to Cub Scout Pack 41 (Griffin Creek and Oak Grove elementary school students). FROM A NEW BATTERY TO A NEW HOME … THROUGH A RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS Continued from page 1. “Unfortunately, there is a bit of a process to find housing in Jackson County. The biggest issue we face is landlords with available, affordable units,” explains Dave. Unable to use SSVF funds to pay for a new car battery, Dave reached out to local battery companies to ask if they would be willing to donate a battery for this veteran. His last call was to Batteries Plus Bulbs, where he found an employee who went above and beyond to help Derell and Jen. Although the company was unable to donate a battery, the employee had just pulled out a newer battery from his own vehicle, which ended up being the same make and model as the veteran’s. Dave picked up the battery and delivered it as quickly as possible. “I had faith,” says Derell. “I could feel Dave really wanted to help me get the battery for my truck. I knew he would go out of his way because the truck was our only home and transportation.” The Value of Community is Reflected in What We Do to Care for Those Who Need It Most. Within a month, the couple found housing. They are thankful to the individuals and community resources for all of the support. Dave recalls, “It was a proud moment for me as a veteran, and I am blessed to be able to help.” One act of kindness really can make a difference. If you are a landlord and would like more information on how you can help end veteran homelessness in Jackson County, please call (541) 774-4307. 5 FOOD SHARE GARDENS Passing the Pitchfork: Nan King Retires After seven years of coordinating the Food Share Gardens, Nan King is stepping into a well-deserved retirement. With her boundless energy, Nan brought our vision for the gardens to life, engaging hundreds of volunteers to help develop the program into seven highly productive gardens throughout the county. With Nan’s oversight, the gardens have reliably produced fresh, nutritious food for thousands of people who would not otherwise have had access to such high-quality organic vegetables. Nan has also created a community for our volunteers, whose lives are enriched by time spent in the gardens. We are grateful for all Nan has done to promote health, reduce hunger, and build community relationships. We will miss Nan at the center of the program, but we are lucky that she will continue to volunteer as the manager for the Medford garden. ACCESS welcomes Kim Barnes as the new coordinator of the Food Share Gardens. Kim brings a decade of experience in vegetable production and education on small organic farms. Passionate about the transformative power of gardens, she is excited to work with this community to make fresh organic produce accessible to all. Left to right: Philip Yates, Nan King, & Kim Barnes Thank You to Our 2016 Land Hosts! First Presbyterian Church, Central Point Rogue Valley Christian Church, Medford Lampman Baptist Church, Gold Hill Mr. and Mrs. George Kile, Rogue River Rogue Recycling Center, White City Seeking New Garden Sites The ACCESS Food Share Gardens would not be possible without the generosity of our land hosts, who provide the program with land and water at no cost. This year, because of a transfer of land ownership in both Rogue River and Gold Hill, we are seeking to relocate two garden sites in those towns. Tended by a dedicated team of volunteers, these gardens have been providing their communities with thousands of pounds of produce each year. Rogue River Garden Are you the next land host for this amazing community resource? A good garden site is a minimum of 60 by 160 feet and has well-drained soil, good sun exposure, and access to water. Water use is minimal as the gardens are irrigated with a drip system. If you have land to offer in Gold Hill or Rogue River, please contact Kim Barnes at (541) 779-6691, ext. 309.
