“The Golden Kite, the Silver Wind” is a story by Ray Bradbury that details a competition between
two villages in ancient China, specifically seeing who can build a better, more symbolic wall. The theme of “The
Golden Kite, the Silver Wind” is that it is better to work together than to compete because the two villages in the
story fell apart economically, people began to die, and when the two villages worked together they flourished.
First, the two villages fell apart economically because all of the townspeople were working on rebuilding the
walls and no one was tending to their businesses or farmland. Second, people began to die as a result of the
competition. People had nothing to eat since they were not tending to their farms, and constant working resulted
in people falling ill and dying. Third, when the cities resolved their conflict and began working together, they
become beautiful. When the two cities decided to end the competition they became healthier, and were able to put
effort back toward their businesses and farms. When the two cities competed they fell apart, however when they
work together to support each other they flourish.
