REFLECTIONS FROM THE REV…….
Rev. Marijke Rossi
May is such a blessed time with Mother’s Day, honoring those who
teach our children and those who provide beautiful music for
worship. I would say that May is a month of gratitude. In this
Easter time let us be in a time of peaceful gratitude. We can look
forward to the joy of summer. Let’s invite our friends and
neighbors to join with us on this journey of faith. Let’s pray for the
vision of who we are as a church and where we are going and
invite into our hearts and church life all that God has planned for
us to grow and fulfil God’s mission for this sacred space.
Give thanks to the Lord for God is good. God’s love endures
forever. Psalm 107:1

ANNUAL MEETING
The 152nd Annual Meeting of First
Congregational Church of Salt Lake City will
be held on June 4, 2017 in the sanctuary
following the worship service. The purpose of
the meeting will be the presentation and
approval of the budget, receipt of reports from boards,
moderator, and minister, and election of board members and
officers for the coming year and other issues needing
consideration by the membership of the church. Please plan on
attending. Thank You.
FROM THE CLEANING CREW
The bathrooms get cleaned mid-week and the
building also usually gets vacuumed mid-week as well.
Please be aware of this cleaning schedule, the cleaning
crew comes only once a week. During the summer months coming
up we get ants if food is left on the floor. If using the fireside
room after the building has been cleaned please sweep up the
floors and be sure the trash is out and new liners are put in cans
also check the bathrooms. Please leave the building how you
found it so it can be nice and clean for Sunday. Leave No Trace!
Parish Nurse Health Tip - New Guidelines For Prostate
Cancer Screening From the US Preventative Services Task Force*
Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer among
men in the US; nearly 13% will be diagnosed with it over the course
of their lifetimes, according to the National Cancer Institute.
The latest data show that over 180,000 men were diagnosed with
prostate cancer in 2016, but there were only 26,000 deaths from it.
Prostate cancer accounted for 4.4% of all cancer deaths in the
United States last year.
Prostate cancer can raise levels of PSA, a protein produced by the
prostate gland -- but this doesn't happen in all cases. PSA can also
go up for other reasons, such as infections or benign enlargement of
the prostate. Because the test is imperfect, there are a number of
missed cancers, false alarms, and false positives.
The risk of potential harm of over-diagnosis has led to confusing
recommendations for screening. Treatment for prostate cancer,
including removal of the prostate and radiation, is associated with
incontinence and erectile dysfunction.
Now on the flip side, the recommendations not to screen for prostate
cancer likely resulted in deaths that could have been avoided.
The New Recommendations:
The new recommendations for PSA tests say men ages 55 to 69
should "make an individualized decision about prostate cancer
screening with their clinician."
Those older than 70 shouldn't undergo PSA screening, the task force
said.
PSA is a simple blood test and an elevated PSA can be a sign of
prostate cancer.
Other Considerations:
Your health care provider may want to consider not only the level
of PSA, but is there a change over time.
Some providers may want a baseline level.
Do you have prostate cancer in your family history?
Ethnicity? African-Americans are at a higher risk.
False positives can lead to unnecessary further testing or treatment,
and many cases of prostate cancer are slow-moving and require
watchful waiting rather than immediate treatment.
Data shows about 35 per 1,000 men are over-diagnosed.
The recommendations say nothing about men under 55, for whom
some groups do recommend screening in some circumstances. Actor
Ben Stiller last year divulged that he was diagnosed with prostate
cancer after receiving a "baseline" PSA test at age 46, crediting the
test with saving his life.
Well, isn’t this a can of worms! For now, the task force's recommendation?
Talk with your clinician!
*The US Preventative Services Task Force, created in 1984, is an
independent advisory group of national experts in prevention and
evidence based medicine that works to improve the health of
Americans by making recommendations about clinical preventative
services, such as screenings.

MAY OUTREACH - Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep
The financial recipient of donations during the month of May will
be Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep. Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep
(NILMDTS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was founded
in 2005 by a photographer and a mother who had experienced
the loss of her six-day old infant due to an inherited
neuromuscular condition. This organization provides professional
photography services to families experiencing the loss of an
infant thereby helping families with the healing process by
creating images of remembrance. Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep
serves over 3,500 families worldwide each year. NILMDTS
reaches every state in the United States and has been or is
present in 40 countries worldwide. This massive effort takes funds
to continue this mission.
GARDEN OF GRACE - Spring Recap
A heart-felt thank you to all those who helped. They included:
Staci, Dean & Blake Broderick, Wendy and Scott Haupt, Ron
Sawdey and Cissy Wolff, Scott and Ryan Hansen. A special
thanks to Yarka Pala who came early and returned on
Wednesday to help us finish up. With everyone’s help we
trimmed bushes and plants, planted Daffodils, ground cover, and
tree starts, swept the stone pavers. Enjoy the Garden
FROM THE DEACONS
A heart-felt thanks to all who participated in our Lenten Activities.
The season was a special one because of this participation. We
look ahead to the last months of our church year. On May 14, we
will be celebrating Mother’s Day by honoring all women of the
church and hearing from any graduating seniors. We will also
show our appreciation to the Sunday School Program. On May
21, we will show our appreciation to the choir and music provided
throughout the year. We hope everyone will join us in these
celebrations.
The Board of Deacons would love to have volunteers from the
congregation to do the liturgy on Sunday mornings. This is an
opportunity to participate in the worship service at convenient
times for you. Please talk to any of the Deacons or Marijke if you
would like to learn more about this opportunity.
As our nominating committee works to fill boards and other church
positions, the Deacons invite you to volunteer for this board. It is a
wonderful and important way to serve the church and help
provide a meaningful time of worship.
Join us in worship to celebrate our faith and commitment to First
Congregational Church.
