Contentment: “To be free from care because of satisfaction with what
is already one's own. The Hebrew means simply "to be pleased." The
Greek brings out the full force of the word in 1 Timothy 6:8; Hebrews
13:5. Contentment (1 Timothy 6:6) is more inward than satisfaction;
the former is a habit or permanent state of mind, the latter has to do
with some particular occurrence or object. (Bible Tools Dictionary)

I believe that we all search for and desire contentment in our lives. To
be at a place where we are happy, satisfied, and/or pleased is a very
good goal for our lives. But, the $1,000,000 question is how do I get there? (Hint: it is not in
having a $1,000,000 like many think that bring happiness and contentment.)

Martin Thielen says in his book “Searching for Happiness: How Generosity, Faith, and Other
Spiritual Habits Can lead to a Full Life” that there are nine attitudes and behaviors that make
people content:
Contented people use trials as growth opportunities.
Contented people cultivate optimism.
Contented people focus on the present.
Contented people practice forgiveness.

Contented people express gratitude.
Contented people care for their bodies.
Contented people care for their souls.
—Martin Thielen, Searching for Happiness: How Generosity, Faith, and Other Spiritual Habits Can Lead to a
Full Life (Westminster John Knox, 2016), 17.
I find it interesting that all nine of these happiness traits are taught in the Bible. Yet, in honesty, I should not be surprised at this fact because the Bible is a constant source of inspiration
and wisdom for life. As Dorothy in the “Wizard of OZ” comments when asked if she learned
anything from her adventure, “If I ever go looking for my heart's desire again, I won't look any
further than my own back yard.” (or maybe in my Bible). Not bad advice.
Maybe this year at Thanksgiving, we need to add another word of thanks to God. We thank
God for all the “things” we have been blessed with: family, home, job, country, gadgets, etc.
But, rarely do we remember to thank God for an attitude, the attitude of contentment. Not
only be thankful, but put this attitude to work in our lives. For this kind of contentment leads
to much thanksgiving!

M-CARDS
In an unfamiliar place; in an unexpected circumstance
We started this program to raise money to help with our church's debt five years ago. This program allows
you to purchase cards to places that you normally shop and gives back to our church a certain percentage of
your purchase. Along with this program, you will receive a tax deduction for the percentage that is given to
the church for each card. This is a wonderful, easy way to invest in your church.
The cards that we have on hand each week range in the amounts from $10-$100. We have several cards
for restaurants, grocery and department stores, Amazon, I Tunes, gas cards and more. We also have a vendor list with over700 vendors that you can order from. The holiday season is approaching quickly. Let us help
you with your gift giving needs. Gift cards make great presents!
If you need them sooner, please let us know at the time of your order. If you need cards during the week
contact Kevin Sell at 812-230-8295, Vicki Bailey at 812-236-9010, Sandy Sell at 812-230-2407 or Missy Wilcox
at 812-201-8206. Happy Thanksgiving! May you be blessed with many wonderful blessings this season.
I was in unfamiliar territory away from the church building, so I had nowhere to seek refuge or solace as I
waited. The wedding ceremony was to begin at 3:30 p.m. I arrived at 2:45 p.m. in case there were any questions and, to receive information on the sound and being mic'd for the event.
Then, crisis arose: Was it the Bride-to-Be? The Mother-of-the-Bride? An exhausted flower girl or ring bearer?
NO!
The crisis was in the Men's department: They noticed their wedding vests had Button Holes, and the Buttons,
though included in the bag, were NOT sewn onto the wedding vests.
You could hear the men, panicked, but not sure of what to do. They began this "call": Anyone know how to
sew? Anyone know someone who can sew?
There was a lot of silence in the lobby at this request. So, I asked the question: "What needs sewn? A hem? A
seam?"
No. Just buttons. Like, a lot of buttons.
I responded, "I can do buttons."
So, I follow one of the Groomsmen to assist with buttons.
Many are used to weddings starting late because the Bride is not ready, or the photographer takes too long.
BUT, this day, it was strange: Where is the Pastor? It's 3:30 p.m. -- I could hear responses and began smiling
to myself, as it was uncanny and humourous. She's in the men's dressing room sewing on buttons!
First, the Sound Tech came and found me to give me the microphone. Then, the Mother of the Groom came to
me. I was down to one more vest. No one was disappointed (Thanks be to God).
About 3:50 p.m., I'm finally robed and mic'd and in my place as the Groom says to me: "I don't have my
speech." I said to him, "Run and get it."
What it made for, is a great memory for this wedding, and a little joy in my own weekend as I was able to busy
myself in this unfamiliar setting, in an unexpected circumstance.
The ceremony was serious, sacred, and even side-splitting at times as the Groom realized he forgot something
special he wanted to do in the ceremony; as the children taking part in the Sand Ceremony realized that the picture in the frame was NOT them (yet); and as the pastor had to remind the couple to look at one another, as
they recited their vows to one another.
May we look for ways to create fun memories; to find joy in the moment; to sow
into others, in unexpected moments, in unexpecting ways -- to bring peace, happiness, and hope.

In case you missed it. The M-Card program presented a check in the amount of
$3000.00 to the church in October. That brings the total money generated from the
program to $20,000.00.
“Two Little Copper Coins”
“Two Little Copper Coins” will be the theme of the 2016 Annual Stewardship Campaign for Memorial UMC
church. “Two Little Copper Coins” is a Steward Program based upon the scripture from Luke 12:41-44. Often
known as the “Widow’s Mite”, it is a reminder that the size of the gift is not as important as the size of the
faith making the gift.
Vivienne Stapleton offers these insights into the Widow’s Mite: What did Jesus notice? Of course we
don't know for sure, but here are some possibilities.
The widow's courage I imagine it took quite a bit of courage for her to make her gift alongside the rich
with their fistfuls of coins. The trumpet shaped receptacles clanged loudly, tellingly, for those who threw
in more coins. I can’t imagine the courage required to let the last remains of security to leave her hand
and face any future with hope.
The widow’s dignity. Surely she had to steel herself when widowhood reduced her worth to nothing in
the eyes of society. A person marked expendable even in the Temple she loved.
The widow’s great faith. In the face of all the evidence piled up around her, she believed her tiny gift
had value in God's eyes.
Letters and estimate of giving cards will arrive in your mailbox early in November. We will have a member
share his giving story on November 6th with the Stewardship Sermon on November 13th. We would like for
the Estimate of Giving Cards to be turned back in to the church office by Friday, November 18th so they can be
included in the Service of Dedication on November 20th.
Stewardship Campaigns are only seen in terms of finances. While finances are, of course, important, how we
give back to God in a number of ways can be just as important. Please begin thinking and prayerfully considering your gift to Memorial Church for 2017.

On behalf of our family we would like to thank Memorial church for all of the donations and prayers we received
for the LIGHT THE NIGHT WALK we participated in. The event was held in Indianapolis. We walked from Victory
Field to White River Park along with about 3000 other walkers. Our team #familystrong raised $1366.00. The total
donations for the walk is over $540,000.00. FYI - donations are still being accepted. You can go to http://
www.lightthenight.org/in/localchapter/locations/Indianapolis to make your donation.

Join Scouting and Soles4Souls in Wearing Out Poverty
Scouting is not only about campfires and merit badges. Scouting provides the
opportunity to participate in adventures, build character, understand responsibility and much more – even the concepts of thriftiness and “helping others
at all times.”
The Crossroads of America Council BSA has partnered with Soles4Souls to
collect 25,000 pairs of shoes in hopes of changing 25,000 lives. In partnering
with Soles4Souls, we are showing youth that by collecting shoes, oppressed
lives can gain relief or confidence and even aid in the building and management of self-sustainable micro-enterprises.
Crew 920 and Troop 24 will be collecting shoes from Oct 30 to Nov 18. Any type (eg, flip flops, boots,
heels, etc) of footwear in new or decent used condition may be placed in the designated collection bin in
the Narthex.

A SIXTH YEAR FOR SANTA’S STORE
TRIPLE “F”
For the last five years the United Methodist Women sponsored an event where every child participating in the
after school program at 14th and Chestnut was able to choose a gift for his/her teacher, for his/her home (parent
or family) and for himself/herself, a total of at least 250 presents. Our congregation and friends were generous
and each child who wanted to participate chose presents from donated items we provided for “Santa’s Store”.
Christmas is a wonderful season for sharing and we are not asking you to buy new items. We are asking you
to look through your dresser drawers, the foot of your closets, the Christmas items you may not use to decorate
your home and tree this year and your jewelry box for anything you no longer wear or never wore. Do you have
neck scarves you do not wear or knick-knacks you are tired of looking at? Do you have gifts you received but have
never taken out of the box? Let’s repurpose some of our wonderful “male and female stuff for Christmas and daily
use” that is no longer a high priority item in our lives but would make a child happy to be able to choose, wrap
and present to his/her teacher or family member.
If you have nothing you want to re-gift then think about gift cards from our MCARD stock. Financial donations
also will help with the expense of gift bags, cards, ribbons, bows, tape, markers, etc. (if these items are not donated) so the children can have the fun of decorating each package. The practice the United Methodist Women
have of filling Christmas mugs and Christmas dishes with candy and Christmas trinkets would certainly be appropriate. Purchase the candy (or repurpose Halloween candy) and send in a mug or we will fill one already donated
or the dishes and small baskets others donate. We hope you find a shopping bag full of treasures in your home
that will mean a great deal to a child who wants to give to others.
Shanda Johnson is heading this church activity. If you have questions about the project please call her at 812249-6980 or 812-243-1483. During the month of November and early December there will be a tote marked
“SANTA’S STORE--CHRISTMAS PRESENT PROJECT FOR 14th AND CHESTNUT” next to the always present grocery
cart for food donations. Please put your donated re-gift items in the tote. You can also call Shanda and she will
pick up any items you are unable to bring to church.
She needs friends from Memorial to help transport the items from church to 14th and Chestnut on Monday, December 12th beginning at 10:00 a.m. We will set up the “Santa Store” on Monday morning, December 12th beginning at 10:30 a.m. until it is done. We will need helpers on December 13th and 14th from 3:00 P.M. to 5:00
P.M. when the children choose and wrap their gifts. Let Shanda
know if she can count on you being at the Center and helping set
up or assist the children.
Thank you for your participation in this project. We know
from the last five years the children will be excited to be able to
choose special presents for their teachers, the special men and
women in their lives and for themselves.
This next meeting of the Triple F Monthly Fellowship will be on Friday, November 18th at 11:45 a.m. The
menu will be Turkey and roll. You are asked to bring…

ANNUAL CHARGE CONFERENCE
The Charge Conference will be a district charge conference this year. There will be a number of churches from
around the West District that will gather together on this afternoon. Our charge conference will be on Sunday,
November 6 at 2:00 p.m. at Brazil Union UMC. The charge conference meets by rule of the Book of Discipline
to elect Trustees, set salaries, and report on our Vital Signs goals. All members and friends of the church are
invited to attend and members of the Administrative Board are expected to attend. If you have any questions,
please contact Rev. Johnson.
WELCOME - Carter Ammerman, Youth Director
Carter grew up in Nappanee, Indiana where he graduated from NorthWood High
School. After high school he went on to graduate from Bethel College in Mishawaka, IN with his B.A. in Youth Ministry and Masters in Ministry. During his time at
Bethel College he was both a thrower on the track team as well as a Graduate Assistant track coach during his Masters program. Carter met his wife, Abby, in college and they got married in June 2015. They enjoy playing sports, hiking, drinking
coffee, playing games, and traveling. Carter has spent the past nearly ten years
working with youth, both inside and out of the church setting. He tries to be as
much of a student as possible and is constantly trying to learn new things; be
those facts and information or a new skill. He still remains a big kid at heart and
still enjoys collecting vinyl records and comic books, playing board games, and
anything Batman related. Fun fact, when Carter was growing up he wanted to be
an architect and still hopes to design and build a house someday.
United Methodist Men (from David Peter)
Quick reminders from the Memorial United Methodist Men. Saturday, November 12, 2016 is our Monthly Breakfast and Devotion. We will meet at Cackleberries. If you’re not receiving email from me, [email protected],
send me an email and I will add you to the list! Boy the time you read this, the 5th Sunday Potato Bar will be
completed … thank you for your continued support in the activities of the Memorial United Methodist Men. I am
continuing to study the life of Paul, and how he is an example of leadership, even for the church today. Take a
look at 2 Timothy 4:1-22 as rules for Christian Leadership … we are all familiar with verses 1-8. I’d ask you to
look at this chapter in a different light. As leaders, we are often faced with challenges … so, what can you learn
from 2 Timothy 4:1-22 that will make us all better leaders? See you soon!

Mission Moments – November 2016
Advent Offering - The Advent season is here and as we have done in recent years, the
Advent offering (November and December) is for the support of 14th & Chestnut Community
Center. The poverty levels throughout the Wabash Valley remain high, but they are much higher
in the neighborhood of the Center. Many long-time supporters are experiencing reduced
incomes so they cannot be as generous as past years. By sharing our many Thanksgiving and
Christmas blessings with the Center they can continue their good work for the children and
families of the surrounding community. During 2015 Advent season MUMC donated nearly
$16,000 to 14th & Chestnut.
You can support the 14th & Chestnut Community Center mission programs in several different ways.
The Angel Tree will enable you to support the Grumbling Tummies after-school meals program throughout the school year.
You can donate to this program in the honor of a particular child whose photograph you will find in the narthex.
The envelopes in the offering plate will be used for operating expenses (such as utilities, food pantry, maintenance, and salaries) of 14th & Chestnut.
Donation of food supplies to Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, the food pantry operated by 14th & Chestnut Community Center.
Volunteers are always welcome for a variety of tasks, kitchen help with food preparation and serving and staffing in the food
pantry are always needed.
Please be generous in your support of this vital mission work here in Terre Haute. As John Wesley said, “give as much as you can,
to all that you can, …forever as long as you can.”
2nd Mile Support in Oct (2015) – Sep (2016) – Thanks for your continued support for our many mission projects. You are an outrageously generous congregation!
October (2015) – Purdue Christian Campus House – Mallory Manning. - $2073.
Advent (November/December2015) – 14th & Chestnut – Angel Tree $6700 & Offering $9085 = $15785.
January – Emergency Outreach Fund (AKA Christmas in July) - $982.
Lenten (February/March) – IOP - $6813.
April – Middle School Church Camp – $1117.
May – Midwest Mission Distribution Center - $1029.
June – WILL Center - $663.
July – Habitat for Humanity $700 and Drinkable Book - $820.
August – Flood Buckets (MMDC) - $1367.
September – MUMC Preschool & Kids Hope - $ 1,051.
IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER IS NOW PERMANENT
(from Community Foundation newsletter, written by Pamela Jones Davidson)
Incredible news for those of you 70 ½ and older, the provisions of the IRA Charitable Rollover were made permanent by Congress in late 2015. That Act, first passed in 2006, lets donors of that age contact their IRA plan
administrator and ask that administrator to prepare a check of a certain amount to a non-profit like Memorial
UMC. Those direct distributions from the IRA to the charity count towards or perhaps even satisfy the plan
owner's IRA required minimum annual distribution for that year. Most importantly, the distribution is not included in the donor's taxable income, so maybe a lower income tax bracket. A key to this Act is that the check
be issued the IRA administrator and not the donor, though some donors deliver those checks personally.
A huge plus of this Act is the ability of older donors who do not anticipate needing their IRA, to as much as
$100,000 per year from their IRA to a public charity. There is no tax deduction for this gift to charity, but not
including that IRA distribution in taxable income is a far greater advantage since a deduction is only as valuable
the donor's income tax bracket. That donor can witness their generosity during life and see how their gift is being used, so meaningful and even better when with the tax advantage of less taxable income. Both a husband
and wife can each give up to $100,000 from an IRA to a public charity each year, but an advisor should be consulted before such action is taken. If you have questions about this and other ways to give to Memorial, contact
the church office or John Perry, Endowment Chairperson.

MEMORIAL PRESCHOOL NEWS
Be sure to drop by and shop at the Memorial Preschool craft/bake sale table at the UMW
Craft Fair during the Chili Supper on November 4 from 4pm to 7pm.
Fall Parent-Teacher conferences will be held on Thursday, November 3. There will be no
classes on this day. The Preschool Board will be meeting on Monday, November 14 at
6:30 pm. The Pre-K students will be going to Dobbs Park on Thursday, November 10.
November will be filled with learning about Thanksgiving and Native Americans. We will have a school wide day
on Thursday, November 17 where everyone is to dress either like a Pilgrim or a Native American. Thanksgiving
break will be Monday, November 21 thru Friday, November 25.
The Youth and parents fellowshipped together out-of-doors at the Graham
Farm! Roasting Weinies, throwing things into the fire, and enjoying a fun
game where one of the youth was left "unsought". God finds us....where we
are; even when we don't want to be found. With the youth busy schedules,
some at sports practice at 6:00 a.m.!, down time to laugh, wander, and not
focus on school or "serious" conversations is Oh-So-Welcome. When you see
someone standing alone, don't assume they want to be alone and fail to offer a greeting. Offer the greeting, then, if you do gather they are just observing, offer space. But first,
offer a greeting. God does the same with you.
We will be collecting money the week of November 7 for a scholarship for an Illula Orphan Program child. The
last two years we were able to sponsor a little girl. This is a way we can encourage our students to make a difference in another child’s life. We ask that our students do a chore and make money to give toward the scholarship. Our goal is to raise $150 so we can again sponsor a child. Education is the best way to help others reach
their goals and make the world a better place.
We wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving!
In ministry together,

Hard to believe, but Christmas is coming! That means the much-anticipated Kids Hope Christmas Party is
right around the corner. The party, to be held this year on December 7th, will be two hours of action-packed fun
and chaos (you remember if you’ve partied with us before!), and lots of special one-on-one time with the children
and both their mentors and prayer partners.
Sunday, November 13, the youth will have their Annual Thanksgiving Potluck Family Dinner!
THANK YOU
A Thank You note was received from the Jack All Family. They wanted to thank everyone for the beautiful service. They also want to thank everyone who helped with the luncheon.
Midwest Mission Distribution Center sent a thank you note for the $275.00 that was donated to them.
But it requires lots of items to make it successful – cookies and the supplies to decorate them, craft supplies, and
most important, lots of small gifts that the kids will choose for giving to another child in the Kids Hope program.
Janet Ring Pierson sent in two thank you notes. Janet thanks everyone you sent get well cards and letters of
encouragement. Janet is doing well and mentioned that Jim is now in a care facility in Jasonville.
Want to be part of the fun? Here’s how you can help:
~ Visit the Kids Hope bulletin board in the narthex.
~ Choose one or more of the slips of paper and purchase those items.
~ Return the items (unwrapped) to the Kids Hope Christmas box in the narthex.
UM Women appreciate you helping us to "Kick Hunger in the Can" during the month of October. All donations to
the 14th and Chestnut, Mother Hubbard's Cupboard are appreciated. Thank You!!
We’re happy to have cash donations if you’d like us to do the shopping for you!
See Carmen or Paula.
A letter from 14th & Chestnut was received thanking Memorial for the monetary donation of $765.00 to help pay
utilities and for all the hard work on the ramp.
United Campus Ministries sent in a letter thanking us for our generous monetary donation.
Thank you in advance for helping to make this year’s Kids Hope Christmas party
a happy experience for these children. Enjoy your shopping!
Lorraine Randall (Chiyona’s mother), wants to thank Memorial for their prayers and the comforter (provided by
the yarn ministry).
From Rev. Chiyona.
Thank you so much for all the well wishes, cards and prayers while I
recovered from surgery due to my broken foot. I have a great, loving
church family. Christy Cresgy
Thank you for the tokens of Appreciation during October, "Pastor Appreciation Month". Many may think that Pastoral Life is "easy"...Yet, it's no magic bubble. We still have families; experience death, sadness, uncertainly, and
even conflict. It's great, when the place we offer grace, acceptance, forgiveness, and hope, also acknowledges
that we still need the same.
