New Ministry
31 Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my
disciples; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” 33 They answered him, “We are
descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, “You will be
made free?” 34 Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits a sin is a slave to sin. 35
The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. 36 So if the Son
makes you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are descendants of Abraham; yet you look for an
opportunity to kill me, because there is no place in you for my word. 38 I declare what I have seen in the
Father’s presence; as for you, you should do what you have heard from the Father.”- John 8:31-38
“Freedom Isn’t Freedom, Lord....”
I remember how confining and frustrating my first freshman semester of
college was. The rules of the dorm, roommates without any concern for others,
noise and the smell of pot wafting through the dorm ductwork were all too
much for me. At the end of that semester, three of us moved into our own
apartment. Freedom at last! It didn’t take long for me to see that one
roommate was a complete slob. Another became homesick. Plus the burden of
cooking, shopping and cleaning seemed to be falling on me all the time. My
vaunted “freedom” wasn’t what I had imagined. (v. 37) Even the newlyconverted Jews of Jesus’ day thought their definition of “freedom” was best.
Yet, the brand of Judaism practiced in those days was one of the most rigid,
oppressive and legally “bound up” in history. Isn’t it interesting how we can
turn our own definition of “freedom” into idolatry? (v. 31) Jesus knew better.
True freedom comes from “continuing in” Jesus’ teachings, his example and
his Spirit. One of the great paradoxes of Christianity is that freedom comes
from being “bound”...bound to the heart, mind and example of Christ. My

least stressful and most productive period in college came when I
finally gave up my stubborn insistence on being “free.” I moved
home where I didn’t have roommates, laundry, toilets to scrub and
shopping to do. I was free to be a student (v. 32) The simple truth
was that I was, by the grace of my parents, allowed to focus on
school and work. That’s how it is with God’s brand of freedom. If
we will just give in, go home and give up our own stubborn
insistence upon our own definition of freedom, it is then that we
find the truth: God’s plan for every person’s life is so much better
than anything we could plan for ourselves. Christianity is always
about homecoming. The initial steps home begin when we “do
what we have heard from the Father.” Shhhh! Can you hear him?

Heritage Sunday
April 24, 2016
Luncheon and Program
Featuring NM Conference
Archivist Will Steinsiek
We invite you to attend our annual
celebration of Heritage Sunday. We
will hear stories of how the Methodist
Circuit Riders of the 1800s and the
1900s impacted the churches of that era.
They were the traveling preachers who
ministered to the smaller churches that
didn’t have an assigned preacher, plus
caring
for
their
own
church
congregation. They were ministering to
the people on the western frontier and
braved many obstacles to do God’s
work.
A delicious meal will be prepared by Sandra Raygoza.
A $10.00 donation for her special lunch will be
gratefully appreciated! Join us for a fun time in
Fellowship Hall after Church! Thank you!

some mistakes in the inputting of the information. We also have received new
updated information from our members as well. We ask that you would please
make the corrections in your directories.

The Epistle//Breaking News & Graffiti
JOURNEY 10x10
16“For God so loved the world that he gave his only
Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not
perish but may have eternal life. 17“Indeed, God did not
send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but
in order that the world might be saved through him. –
John 3:16-17, NRSV
Sisters and brothers, when I hear "For God
so loved the world God gave his Son...” I
think of breaking news and graffiti.
Breaking news, like the alerts I get on my
smart phone. Breaking: God loves world!
Jesus sent as special envoy. God's love not
only for church or good people. Special benefits
offered: light for those in darkness, comfort not
condemnation, lives enlarged. When asked
for a comment, Jesus said, "Saving is who I
am."
Then there's graffiti. Jesus the graffiti artist
wrote something like God loves world on
the walls of Galilee. He certainly wrote
that on the hearts of the people he met
there: the liar, the cheat and the shunned.
Like the scrawling of a teenager madly in
love, you could feel the heat. Graffiti is
illicit; it defames and defies the status quo,
just like God's love.
Blessings on the Journey,
Pastor D
Fast 10 Times
“I humbled myself with fasting.” – Psalm 35:13
10 Powers of Fasting:
1. Fasting is a biblical way to truly humble yourself in the sight
of God so the Holy Spirit will stir our souls, awaken our
church, and heal our land.
2. The lord will give you fresh, new spiritual insights.
3. Fasting will lead to a more intimate relationship with Christ.
4. Fasting was an expected discipline in both the Old and New
Testaments.
5. Fasting enables the Holy Spirit to reveal your true spiritual
condition, resulting in brokenness, repentance, and a
transformed life.
6. Through fasting the Holy Spirit will quicken the word of God
in your heart and God’s truth will become more meaningful.
7. Fasting can transform your prayer life into a richer and more
personal experience.
8. Fasting can result in a dynamic revival in your own life and
make you a channel of revival to others.
9. Fasting is an act of worship.
10. Jesus implied that all of His followers should fast. For Him it
was a matter of when believers would fast, not if they would
do it.
Sisters and brothers it takes time to build your spiritual fasting
muscles. If you fail to make it through your first fast, do not be
discouraged. You may have tried to fast too long the first time out, or
you may need to strengthen your understanding and resolve. As soon
as possible, undertake another fast until you do succeed. God will
honor you for your faithfulness.
May God bless you on the fast this month.

accounts for net revenue over expenses for the month. 2016 foundation income has not been requested yet.
Housing allowance was requested and received in February 2016.
Expenses: We are pleased to inform the congregation that we paid our January 2016 shared ministries of $3,137.00.
This was paid in February 2016 and will be reflected in next month’s financial report. The Church’s payroll is biweekly and January 2016 had only 2 pay periods for the month. Monthly budget is for one month, so there are
some timing differences.

Jolly Elders//Spotlight Day School//Update
Jeff Lane// President
Jolly Elders was founded in the spring of 1957 to
serve the retired persons at the old Trinity
Methodist Church. Mrs. V. O. (Sybil) Johnson
founded Jolly Elders at the request of Pastor Dr.
Don Schooler. The church wanted to give retired
people an organization of their own for fellowship,
Christian study and service. Others from outside
Trinity began to hear about the group and asked to
join. Jolly Elders became open to all people and
remains so today. From about 40 charter members,
Jolly Elders grew until there were over 500
members on the mailing list and an average of 280
in attendance at the General Meetings in the late
1970's. By then, other churches had begun working
with the retired community. The city opened
senior centers and many Jolly Elders joined other
groups closer to their homes.
Letty Ruvalcaba// Director
“The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no
law.” Galatians 5:22-23
Lockdown//Download Remind APP
Recently we experienced a lockdown simulation. Through a
communication of a lockdown at EPCC, we continued
through our procedure to lockdown our school. After several
minutes, we were informed that the lockdown was actually
at another EPCC campus. However, it was great practice for
our children and teaching team. The procedure entails,
teachers staying in their classrooms, barricading the door,
and hiding. If you are on campus for a church event, please
follow accordingly. No one is allowed in or out of the facility
until the “All Clear” is communicated. You will be informed
through the REMIND APP. It is very important, especially
for these emergency alerts. The school code is 81010 and the
church family “class” code is @trinityfir.
Easter// Picnic
Even though our numbers are down, we still have
averaged at least 90 members the past few years.
We also have a good turnout averaging 50 people
for lunch for our Monthly meetings. We take 'day
trips' on the second Thursday of every month to see
new sights around El Paso, or visit old favorites.
Our February trip was to have lunch at Old Mesilla.
Jim Wade and Marylin "Cookie" Adams deserve
much credit for keeping Jolly Elders going for so
many years.
Also, most of the Trinity-First
members are steady volunteers, like George and
Lena Hughes, and Elizabeth Kerr, who deserve
thanks.
Who Knew?!
I saw an article in the Church paper from the early
1980s where Jolly Elders held a fundraiser to help
purchase a Van for Trinity-First. It was a Spaghetti
Supper, and the cost was $1.50 per plate!
Easter is around the corner and we will be making our plans
for our Easter Picnic family field trip. Check with your
child’s classroom to confirm which park your class will be
attending. It will also be mentioned in their class newsletter
only for Preschool –Kindergarten classrooms.

Music Ministry//Old is New Again
John Eby// Director
Over the years there have been various formats of our worship music. There have been two-page columns in the weekly
bulletin containing some personal anecdotes and information about hymns and anthems. There have been recognition of
people who have presented their talents to God through our worship experience. Then there were bits of information about
the anthem of the day and lyrics to aid in enjoyment and appreciation. We are now in transition to a new communications
pattern! Many of you have commented kindly about missing the musical tidbits that have been shared in the past. Music
Ministry will continue to fuse the new and old together as our congregation continues to morph and new families and
worshippers join us! Everything old seems new again! A huge thank you goes out to the choir members for their consistent
commitment and weekly service to our church. Each of you are appreciated!
Music Ministry’s goal is always to open up pathways into God’s presence through our music, whether it be an anthem, a
hymn, special music, praise team, or our wonderful keyboard and organ artist such as, Dr. Zeke Meza. We are not a
beginners’ choir, however, we always welcome new members into our midst and would like to hear from you! If you have
considered joining the Sanctuary Choir, please contact me at 915.355.1197 or at
[email protected].

Jerusalem Marketplace
Children’s Ministry would like to invite you, your children, your family, and friends to join us for a special Palm Sunday
event! Children will enjoy crafts and seek answers to the question, “Who is Jesus?” This free event will be held Sunday,
March 20th from 9:00 AM to 10:45 AM. There will be weaving, bakery, woodworking, stories, basket weaving, jewelry
making, a spice shop, and a sweet shop. Come join us and walk the footsteps Jesus walked.
Fill the Ark
Our Fill the Ark program is a giving bank that families fill with loose change for collection during Lenten season. We are
asking the children of the congregation to put their money together during this time to help be a part of the Heifer Project.
This project will help provide a cow, a pig or some chicks to end hunger for a family in need. You, your family, and your
congregation can make a difference in today’s world! Let’s help end hunger and poverty with this mission of giving just in
time for the Lenten season. For more information, please contact Mark at [email protected].
Thanks!

Featured Article//Women’s Work? More like Women Work!
Lanica Yu-Richardson// Communications Director
Some people assume that women’s rights is all about the 19th amendment allowing women to vote and
gain legal and social equality as their counter parts on August 18, 1920. Although this is true, women have
worked hard to help serve their community and improve others’ lives as well as their own. This month we
celebrate women’s history by reflecting the contributions and legacy the United Methodist Women have
upheld for the last 246 years. Some of the United Methodist Women throughout history have fought to be
strong leaders in their church, for their community, and to other women while promoting social justice,
equality for all, and spreading the gospel across stateliness and overseas.
The United Methodist Women have a strong and rich history of
women paving the way for others through their work in oversea
missions and being a part of the abolitionist movements that
were occurring in the 1800s. Some of the women who had a
huge impact on our history stated that they were “called in the
spirit” to traveled and spread the gospel as well as introduce
Methodism to the world.
Sojourner Truth, an ex-slave,
cofounded Kingston Methodist Church and well as traveled
throughout the United States to speak on ending slavery for all.
Sophronia Farrington and Ann Wilkins were appointed
missionaries to places such as Liberia. Marjorie Mathews was
the first woman to be elected bishop of the United Methodist
Church in 1980. Minerva Carcano is the first Hispanic woman to
be elected bishop. Leontine T.C. Kelly is the first AfricanAmerican woman to be elected bishop. Anne Howard and Anna
Oliver fought to secure their ordination rights in the 1870s. It is
important to acknowledge these certain points in time because of
the women then, we have women now who are working hard as
ordained preachers, appointed district superintendents,
ordained elders, elected bishops, community leaders, Nobel
Peace Prize winners, and President of Liberia!
United Methodist Women have done so much to encourage
young women to work hard and to serve hard so that others
may know Christ and women’s worth in our society. Keep up
the Great Work!
