VISUAL ARTS 2nd ESO Lessons and Activities POINT (DOT) Conceptually, a POINT has NO dimension, you can't measure it. It is just a location into PLANE or SPACE. Graphically, we can get it crossing two lines: straight (A), straight and curve (B) or curve (C). In Visual Arts, POINT has been used as an ELEMENT with dimensions (height, widht and depth) adding it light and colour properties: now it is a DOT. So, a DOT can be: heavy or light, hard or soft, filled or empty, big or small, sad or happy, cold or warm,... It is used in Graphic Design to get new expression ways. Point, line, plane and texture 1 VISUAL ARTS 2nd ESO Lessons and Activities Point, line, plane and texture 2 VISUAL ARTS 2nd ESO Lessons and Activities DOT has been used in fine arts to get shapes, to theorize about color or to abstract or simplify (symbolic) reality. Point, line, plane and texture 6 VISUAL ARTS 2nd ESO Lessons and Activities LINE Conceptually, a LINE is made of COUNTLESS points aligned in one or several directions (straight or curved) and it has only ONE DIMENSION: LENGHT. STRAIGHT LINE CURVE MIXED LINE BROKEN LINE WINDING LINE WITH DIFFERENT THICKNESS DASHED or DOTTED LINE Point, line, plane and texture 7 VISUAL ARTS 2nd ESO Lessons and Activities These types of lines can have another qualities depending on their position into the sheet or depending on their relative position with another line: POSITION INTO THE SHEET VERTICAL HORIZONTAL DIAGONAL POSITION WITH ANOTHER LINE PERPENDICULAR PARALLEL INTERSECTING Like the dot, we can use the LINE as VALUE for HATCHING or CROSSHATCHING. A PLANE has TWO DIMENSIONS: LENGTH and WIDTH. We can ADD more POINTS to GET different SHAPES. All these POINTS determine the LINES of the SHAPE. These lines can be straight lines or curved lines. These lines are the CONTOUR or OUTLINE of our SHAPE. We can talk about different types of contours: OUTLINE: is the line we notice (perceive) as the drawing of the shape. Point, line, plane and texture 12 VISUAL ARTS 2nd ESO Lessons and Activities CROSS CONTOUR: points, lines and colours which are inside the shape. Cross contour can be used to explain the volume through shading/hatching or using a texture. SILHOUETTE: is a shape with no difference between its outline and its cross contour. It is like seeing an object in front of a bright light. It is the monochromatic shape of an object. Point, line, plane and texture 13 VISUAL ARTS 2nd ESO Lessons and Activities TEXTURE It is the feel, appearance, or consistency of a surface (material) or a substance. We have NATURAL textures that can be found in nature. We have ARTIFICIAL textures that are made by man.
