Captains News - August 2016
Dear fellow Nomads,
Monthly Game at Bushman Sands Golf Club
Game Four of the current playing year was held at Bushman
Sands, which was a brand new addition to the Eastern Cape
Nomads' playing Calendar! This inclusion was necessitated
as a result of the very successful Special Game that was hosted there towards
the end of last year. As a pillar of Nomads is the “Furtherance of Golf” I felt that it
was necessary to give our support to Barry Harmer and his small Team in their
efforts in keeping this Course open. Their passion, drive and commitment in this
regard are exemplary despite having very limited financial and other resources
available to them.
The day began with a very well organised, provisioned and enthusiastically
supported bus trip. Leon Coetzee must be congratulated for his hard work which
ensured that this initiative was again a great success for all concerned. The
weather throughout the day turned out to be fantastic although quite hot, which
was probably the reason for the wind picking up later in the day. The golf course
overall was in great condition despite the lack of water and played extremely well.
It presented the field of 34 x Eastern Cape Nomads, a prospective member and a
guest with a challenging and very interesting golfing experience.
Our thanks to Leon Coetzee
for a well organised Bus Trip!!

Captains News - August 2016
As Barry had elected to rather focus his attentions on
ensuring it was a successful day rather than playing, I was
paired with Stuart McLeod and we squared up against Leon
“Chicken or Beef” Coetzee and a prospective Nomad – Justin
“Thor” Kleinenberg. Although we had money on the game we
instead seemed to focus on our own games throughout the afternoon. Stuart
played a great and consistent overall game and Justin was very impressive with
his “stand and deliver” approach. Some of his tee shots in particular were worthy
of the professional tour! When the final puts were done and everything was
tallied, it was a great surprise to me that we actually ended up taking them by 6 x
points. It was certainly not a good day for me in particular and so Stuart was to
thank for this ……….. Thanks gents for the great day.
Prize-giving started earlier than normal due to the smaller than normal field, and
the Ladies' normal efficiency ably assisted by Ian Gooden. Martin Kunhardt
conducted proceedings again in his very efficient and professional manner.
Thanks also to Cobus Van Biljon for setting up the Altar and sponsor material
timeously despite the added pressure of travelling to the venue on the bus.
A definite highlight and honour for me was the handing over of a 30 Year Award to
our Match Secretary - Jeanne Newman! This is an incredible achievement and
Jeanne must be thanked and congratulated on her commitment and service to
Eastern Cape Nomads! I was also privileged to be able to hand over a 100 x
Game Badge to Ian Gooden. Here's too many many more rounds to come
…………..
From a playing perspective the highlight and also the “Best Player for the Day”
had to be Rob Falkner's 40 x Pointer off a 20 Handicap. He was closely followed
in by Donovan Oosthuizen (37 x points off 20) and Tim Mason (36 x points off 15).
I was humbled after the heights achieved at the last monthly game at Humewood
with a mere 23 x point, which after a count-out was enough to qualify me for my
first Teddy Bear!
It was widely commented on and agreed that this event was a worthy addition to
the playing calendar. Barry and his Team went out of their way to make the
Eastern Cape Nomads welcome and ensure we had a great golfing experience.
The course and layout was very enjoyable and playable, and the fact that the
average score on the day was 30,1 x points would bear this out. I am very
confident that this monthly game will quickly grow in stature and support in years
to come.
Upcoming Games and Events

and pure enjoyment value of this event, we were able to
field a 28 x member strong team against Border, Southern
Cape, Western Province and Boland. The Seaboard
Trophy proper was held on Saturday 5th August at Goose
Valley Golf Club in picture perfect conditions, and we
ended up coming 3rd with Western Province taking the Honours. An individual
highlight for E/Cape was the 38 x points scored by Roger Smith.
The second leg of this event on the following day was the S/Cape Monthly Game
that took place at Plettenberg Bay Golf Club again in ideal conditions. The
scoring came in a little lower overall than the previous day's play, but
notwithstanding Neil Webster came in with a creditable 38 x points to take the A
Division accolades! Just to balance things out we also had a distinguished
member who was the deserving recipient of the “Matchbox” award with 17 x
points which I had to receive on his behalf………. You know who you are!
I will shortly be honoured to represent E/Cape Nomads at the Botswana 16th
Nationals Tournament taking place during 9 & 10th September at the
Phakalane Golf Estate & Hotel Resort. This is my very first away Nationals
and I am really looking forward to this unique and exciting experience!
Shortly thereafter Cobus Van Biljon and I will be attending Lowveld's 20th
Anniversary celebration at White River Country Club on 24 / 25th September.
This weekend will also incorporate the 121st National Management Meeting
(NMM) and we will be sure to report back to members on any important
matters tabled on our return.
By now you may have received the Entry Form for the Special Game that Cobus
has arranged for Tuesday 27th September at Little Walmer / Walmer Golf Club.
Early indications would already suggest that this will be a well-supported game
and we therefore look forward to seeing a good field there.
Another event to look forward to is the reintroduced South-Easter Challenge,
which will take place at St. Francis Links and St. Francis Bay courses (monthly
game) over the weekend of 12 / 13th November. We will be taking on our
Southern Cape neighbours and we are sure that this is going to be very
enthusiastically supported and competed for by both Clubs. Watch out for more
details in the next few weeks!
Nick Koumpan has already started to receive entries for the 52nd Nomads
National Tournament (Jock Nationals 2017) which is being staged at Nelspruit
Golf Club over the week 11 – 17th March 2017. The deadline for entries and initial
payment is 31st October 2016, and despite the tight economic climate we are
hoping to take up our full 18 x player allocation. The Qualifying Criteria to be
applied if we are over-subscribed have recently been published, which I believe
are relevant, fair and balanced towards all E/Cape Members. Let's make sure we

send through a full strength Team otherwise our allocations
will be reviewed for the following year which will more than
likely be hosted in Cape Town!
Next Monthly Game at Port Elizabeth Golf Club
Our next monthly game is scheduled for Sunday 18th September and will also
incorporate a Club visit by our current Nomads National Chairman - Mr. Vic
Hall! Planning has already been done and action items are being executed to
ensure that this is a memorable visit for all concerned.
I would appeal to all members to make sure they enter for this important
game. It is also imperative that we adhere strictly to our dress codes both on
and off the course, and that the behaviour of all concerned is exemplary and
above reproach at all times.
Yours in Nomads.

Fellow Nomads
Thank you to those who supported our trip to Bushman
Sands this month, I'm sure that those in attendance would
agree that it made for a great day out. Further thanks should
be extended to Barry and his team, who always make the
Nomad's feel very welcome and go out of their way to make the day a
success for us as a group. To Leon Coetzee, your efforts with regards to
organising the bus for the day are greatly appreciated, any bus trip always
adds a lot to the enjoyment and camaraderie on the day. Taking the above
into account I feel very confident in adding this game to our playing
calendar for the following year and hopefully even increasing the number
of players!
From an AMT perspective, it has been a relatively quiet month as I have
taken the decision to move the AMT Golf Day to a later date, namely 30
October 2016. The reason this was decided was twofold, firstly the initial
date would have fallen on the same day as our National Chairman's visit,
which in itself causes the game to be a bit more hectic than usual. Secondly
after discussing the date with some of our potential sponsors it was felt
that the later date would allow them some breathing room from our
previous event, which they said would be greatly appreciated. Planning will
thus begin in earnest again very shortly and I will provide you all with
further details as we approach the event and the finer details are ironed out
Have a great month and I look forward to seeing you all at Port Elizabeth
Golf Club for our next monthly game and our visit from the National
Chairman. It would be fantastic to see as many of you as possible at the
game to show the National Executive that Nomad's Golf is alive and well in
the Eastern Cape!
Until next time…….

Junior Vice Captains News
August 2016
Fellow Nomads
I would like to thank all those who were involved in
making the Bushman Sands monthly game the great
success that it was. For the Nomads that were not there you Gents
definitely missed out on a great day !!
I was recently reading the Nomads Diary and the Club Constitution and
found it very interesting. I believe that there are certain clauses therein that
we as Nomads need to take to heart again. I think that we are sometimes
missing the point of being Nomads.
I would therefore like to highlight a Paragraph from our Constitution :
Aim and Objectives
Sub Para 4.1
“To encounter and promote, foster and support the game of golf and in
particular to provide a source of service as may be used for the benefit of
golf in Southern Africa”
Coming back to the game itself, I hope that our deserving Captain has
found a nice spot on his bed for his newly acquired Teddy Bear ! To those
that won their respective divisions congratulations and well done,
especially Rob Falkner who came in with his first 40 pointer !
I hope to see more E/Cape Nomads at the next monthly game at PE Golf
Club and remember the “Nash” will also be visiting us and playing in this
game !
Golfing greetings and see you again
shortly..

The “Rules Box” - August 2016
Fellow Nomads
As of this month we've decided to change things up a little
bit.
Instead of the hidden bottle the Rules Box will now offer
you an opportunity to win a bottle of Glenbrynth. The
concept behind this will be very simple. Every month the
rules box will feature a question surrounding the rules of golf. Simply email
your answer to Ian Gooden and all the correct entries received will go into
the draw. This will continue over a three-month period and if you
participate every month this will give you three “tickets” in the draw. The
draw takes place quarterly at the corresponding monthly Nomads game.
Due to the nature of the questions, however, please note that only one entry
per person will be allowed, so if your first entry is incorrect, you will have
wasted your chance for that month.
NOTE: The last bottle is still hidden in this months magazine and your last
chance to be entered into the draw, which will be done at the PEGC on 18th
September.
This week's question: A player's ball strikes his caddie and comes to rest out of bounds. The
player incurs a penalty of one stroke and must drop the ball in bounds at
the spot where it struck his caddie.
A - TRUE
B – FALSE
Remember to email your answer to [email protected] for a
chance to win the bottle of Glenbrynth.
The answer to this question with
explanation and the new month's
question will be published in the
next e-mag.
