Spring Edition Best 5th Grade Memories By: Izzy Nikruto, Nora Carpenter, and Camdyn Gliem
We asked a few students from 5th grade what their favorite memory was before us 5th graders leave Lake Street! We also asked the 5th grade teachers. Here was the outcome: In Mrs. Hochbaum’ s class: Kaitlyn LOVED the field trip that we’ve taken as a class… it was the Nutcracker! Also in that same class, Harris liked all the friends he made during the year! He also loved Mrs. Hochbaum being there for him always! And all together­ Mrs. Hochbaum loved the ‘punny jokes’ and the laughs we have had all as a class. “It was amazing!” Real statement from the Queen of Hochbaumia. (Inside Joke) Molly favored the fact that her whole class got to eat lunch in the classroom with Mrs. Collier. Jack loved having Mrs. Collier this year, he says that she is an amazing teacher. Mrs. Collier adored her class and their great sense of humor. Dirt Bikes and Quads in the Mud by: Jackson Long, Samantha Dunlap, and Mikayla Vandergast Have you ever driven a dirt bike or a quad in the mud? Driving dirt bikes or quads in the mud is a lot of fun! If you are looking for a new hobby, you should try it out! It is really fun because you get a whole bunch of mud all over you. 5th Grade Is Right Around the Corner Lake Street by: Mikayla Coffey and Hailey Reichelt
5th grade is right around the corner! We are so excited summer is here! That means no homework, no teachers, no school! When we come back, we will be big 5th graders in the highest grade in the school! How do you feel about 5th grade, fourth graders? You probably feel the same way Mikayla and I feel about 5th grade.We feel scared, and we also feel nervous, but we think it might be okay. You get to learn more stuff, and meet a new teacher. It might be easier than we all think. You can get smarter and smarter. You make a ton of new friends, and as new kids move in during a new year, you can make them feel at home.You are going to feel better once you get to the new grade, I bet you that you are going to love it.There’s also more activities you can join! Like Student Council, NEHS, Girls On the Run,and more! 5th grade will not be that hard if you put your 100 percent best into things that you do! So think about it! It won’t be as tough as you think it is. Construction of the Crown Point Library by: Lauryn Bradley, Raegyn Bradley, and Lila Joppek Hello Dazzling Dolphins!! We are here to tell you about Lake Street Elementary School. If you didn’t know, our school is one of the 4 Star Schools. Lake Street was built in 1966. Did you know that the art room, music room, and gym were built in 1995? Kenneth E. Knight was the president, Carroll O. Holley was the secretary, Glenn R. Cooper was treasurer, and Robert J. Brannock was the superintendent! We are writing this to inform new students or anyone who wants to know about Lake Street. Lake Street is a very fun and educating place. Some new students might want to know about Lake Street because maybe they don’t know when it was built or what star our school is. When you get four star school, the Indiana Department of Education recognizes schools that perform in the upper 25th percentile of schools in performance on ISTEP+ and ECA state exams. Lake Street is special because we have run club, Girls on the Run, Science Olympiad, Math Bowl, Newspaper, Stem Club, National Honor Society, Talent Show, Field Day, Daddy/ Daughter Dance, Mother/ Son Night, Spell Bowl, Kids Fun Night, and so much more. Well… Taylor O’Toole, Noha Tebry, and Mackenzie Williams are here to tell you about their interview with a girl named Angel that works with the company that built the Crown Point library. Here are some facts about it. It took over a year to design the library. It took 6 to 8 months to build the library. The most difficult part of the library was the location. It’s on the Crown Point square so there is a lot of traffic, which made it difficult to bring construction materials to the job site. The library is everything that they have it imagined it would be, it adds many community programs to the city of Crown Point. During construction, there was a signing ceremony on the steel beams at all four corners of the building that included many members of the city of Crown Point, police officers, firefighters, and the construction crew. The city of Crown Point wanted the company to make a new library because the one before was too small, and didn’t accommodate the needs for the community. Isn’t that awesome? One Legend by: Jonathan Zimmerman There is one huge legend that retired during 2015 and 2016. This legend has played crazy during their career. The legend is Kobe Bryant.Kobe Bryant entered the NBA directly from high school. Although Kobe played his entire career on the Lakers he was drafted on the Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets almost immediately traded him to the Lakers. Bryant was voted a starter for the 1998 All­Star game, becoming at 19 the youngest All­Star in NBA history.Kobe Bryant had 5 championship rings(a championship ring is when you win the NBA championship). 3 of his rings are from a three peat(three peat is when you do something three times in a row)with Shaquille O’Neal 2000,2001, and 2002. The other 2 rings were from 2009 and 2010. Kobe sadly will not get another ring to tie with Michael Jordan. Kobe Bryant won the 2008 MVP. Although later seasons were lots of injuries passed Michael Jordan for third place on the NBA all time scoring list in December 2014. Although the Laker struggled after O’Neal left in 2004 they still won championships. He scored 81 points against the Toronto Raptors in January 2006. Bryant played on both 2008 and 2012 U.S. Olympic teams, winning consecutive gold medals with teammates Kevin Durant, Lebron James, and Carmelo Anthony, among several other top players. After suffering a torn Achilles tendon in April 2013 worked hard to return to the court. Just 6 games into the 2013­14 season he fractured his knee. The legend surpassed Hall of Famer, Michael Jordan for third all time on the NBA scoring list in December 2014. Suddenly, Kobe’s season ended due to an injury for the third straight year! He sustained a torn rotator cuff in January 2015. Although Kobe returned for the start of the 2015­16 season he struggled with his young teammates on the Lakers. In November 2015, he announced that he would retire at the end of the season. He said "This season is all I have left to give" He also said "My heart can take the pounding. My mind can handle the grind but my body knows it's time to say goodbye." During the season the Lakers struggled and only got 16 wins until the very last game of Kobe’s career. The cheapest tickets to see his last game was $700! On April 13, 2016, Bryant dazzled a sold­out crowd at the Staples Center. Kobe scored 60 points and led the Lakers to a win against the Utah Jazz. Only Kobe’s sixth 60 point game. After the game Kobe spoke to the crowd. "I can't believe how fast 20 years went by . . .,” he said. "This is absolutely crazy . . . and to be standing at center court with you guys, my teammates behind me, appreciating the journey that we've been on — we've been through our ups, been through our downs. I think the most important part is we all stayed together throughout." Kobe Bryant played in the NBA for 20 years. He has changed the game of ball ever since he stepped on the court and will always be remembered as a legend. He is one of the best basketball players to play ball. And will always be remembered. Animals Need Homes by: Viviana Alvarez
Have you seen a lot of construction lately? Have you ever wondered what will happen if we continue building? I will tell you. The outdoor animals will lose their homes! Have you ever thought about homeless animals? It would be awful if you haven’t. We can help though. If you see a worker who is building near by, stand up and tell that worker “STOP! If you keep building, animals will not have homes and they will die! Don’t you want animals to live?” I think animals are no different from people. We need to respect nature the way it is. Influence people to stop building. Join nature now and stand up for our poor animals.Nature is nice! If you build outside buildings, think about all of the animals who will need homes. For example, baby birds. Think of them! So cute and innocent plus cuddly. Where would they live if we keep cutting down the trees? The world is filled with animals that are going extinct! You need to choose. Either you let the animals go extinct or you let them live. If your building homes for people I understand, but not in a giant field. By my house they’re use to be really tall weeds that animals used to live in. Now there’s houses and the weeds and animals are gone! This goes for you too water explorers! If you want to build a water base or something related to that, think about dolphins and how they need space down there! What about the whole sea! The fish are everywhere in oceans! They need homes. Animals are cool, colorful,and adorable. Every summer I go to the zoo and learn how animals are very important to this world! All animals have a role to play in our ecosystem which makes them important. Be one with nature everybody! Don’t be a hater! Be a lover! Animals have reasons to live. Book Review by: Alex Achtzehn There is a book that was written last year that many people would like to call their favorite. It is called Moving Target. It is about a girl named Cassie who discovers that she is a descendant of an ancient bloodline that enables her to use the spear of destiny. Although, a group called the Hastati will do whatever it takes get the spear for themselves. If the spear falls into the wrong hands the world could be in great danger. On a dangerous journey with only her friends Simone and Asher to help her, they have to stay one step ahead of the Hastati at all costs. Well we’ll show you different games. Minecraft and Terraria: Minecraft and Terraria are two different, but fun games. They both have zombies, mining, blocks, swords, and other stuff to use. Minecraft is a fun game for Kids 10+. It also has creepers that explode, Enderman, Ghasts in the wither, And the EnderDragon in the end. Terraria is a fun flying game. It is like minecraft, but more creative. These games are the same and are different. 2. Tom Clancy’s The Division, And Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege: These games are both made by Tom Clancys. The Division is a open world third person video game developed by UbiSoft Massive and published by UbiSoft, with assistance from “Red Storm Entertainment.” This game is for MicroSoft Windows, PS4, And Xbox One. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege is a First person video game, developed by UbiSoft Montreal and Published by UbiSoft.These games are alike by some ways. Both were published by UbiSoft. The only difference between these games are they are First person and Third person perspective. 3. Madden NFL 16 and NBA 2K16: Madden NFL 16 is a American Football sports video game based on the National FootBall League and published by EA Sports. For the consoles such as PS4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360. NBA 2K16 is a basketball simulation video game developed by Visual Concepts and Published by 2K Sports, It is the 17th installment in the NBA 2K franchise and is the successor to NBA 2K15. The fastest year of my life started this fall!One of my favorite things about Lake Street is how all of the students and teachers can get involved in afterschool activities! Newspaper was a lot of work, but I am so happy that I got to sponsor it! Newspaper let me spend time with some of the most talented third, fourth, and fifth grade students.Our writers produced a lot of really good content; I hope that many Lake Street Dolphins get to check out our articles!
