By Laura Mijares Book Nook Remember, it is important to keep reading even during the holiday break. Please don't forget to return your overdue library books so that you can take a new book home to read over the break. Thanks! I s s u e 4 P a g e 3 History Hullaballoo Arthur Knox and Laura Mijares Our sixth grade is learning about the Mayan civilization, which flourished in Mesoamerica from around 300 B.C. until the Spanish came to the Americas. An interesting aspect of Mayan culture is mythology. By studying the myths, we have learned that the Maya developed their own variation of multitheism (multiple gods and goddess) to explain the universe. Our tribute to Mayan myth and art is located in the middle school’s trophy cases across from the student restrooms. Please come visit the newly established showcase. You will be amazed. In addition to their study of New Mexico History, the 7th grade class is in the process of writing a bill which the New Mexico legislature will take under consideration during the next legislative session. With the help of UNM’s Wild Friends program, the 7th graders are researching the problem of animal-vehicle collisions and writing a bill which would require motorists to slow down in wildlife crossing zones. In addition to writing the bill, the 7th graders will be writing letters to their representatives and taking a field trip to Santa Fe in early March to personally lobby for the bill in the Roundhouse. Some of our 8th graders have begun reading The Fifth of March, a Story of the Boston Massacre written by Ann Rinaldi. We are learning that historical events aren't as neat and tidy as they appear in history books, nor are they dissimilar from our own 8 th grade lives. This researched historical fiction is told by a 14 year old servant in the home of John and Abigail Adams. This book allows us insight into the young Americans that thought for themselves and took a stand during the American Revolution. As always, our classrooms are always open. Please join us in a historical adventure. Wow, how time fly's when your busy! This event is free to all visitors. What a lovely opportunity to see the historic ruins. Be sure to attend the Jemez Valley Fine Arts Night where students will be performing various holiday songs and perhaps a skit or two. Each student will have a work of art displayed as well. I have saved the majority of the work students have created this year so that we could choose the best piece to place in this display. Once the art has been chosen, the remainder of the work will be sent home. Enjoy these last few weeks of 2010 and have a wonderful holiday season!
