Early Literacy Activities:
Talk about the word “snowman”. Sound out the different parts of the word “snow”
and “man”. Say them separately and then together again, first slowly and then faster.
Clap once for each syllable.
Help your child think of words that rhyme with snow. Some words that would work are: go,
blow, toe, show. Do the same with man...can, fan, tan, and plan. Make up silly rhymes that
use these words.
On three cards, draw simple weather pictures: bright yellow sun, dark grey clouds and raindrops, a snowman and snowflakes. Prepare three piles of clothing to match these weather
conditions (either actual clothes or pictures): a bathing suit and sunglasses, an umbrella
and boots, mittens hat and scarf. Show your child one of the weather pictures and discuss.
Then your child to choose the right clothes for that kind of weather. If you decided to get
out actual clothing, help your child dress up in these items and act out appropriate weather
related activities.

Songs and fingerplays to share:
The Snowman
Roll the snow into some balls.
Make a snowman, oh so tall.
Place a hat upon his head.
Give him buttons that are red.
Use some coal to make his eyes.
You can do it if you try!
Next, he needs a carrot nose.
Where will we get one of those?
Make a mouth and he'll be done.
Making snowmen is such fun!
My Snowman
I have fun when it snows.
I can make a snowman as round as a ________.
I can make a face for my snowman with _______.
I can make arms for my snowman with_________.
I know my snowman is happy because _________.
I am going to name my snowman __________.
My snowman is my friend.
I Will Build a Snowman
I will build a snowman (pretend to build a snowman)
make him big and tall (pretend to pile snow on top)
See if you can hit him with a big snowball (pretend to throw snowballs..)
Snowman Hokey Pokey (to the tune of the Hokey pokey).
You put your snowman up, you put your snowman down,
You put your snowman up and you shake him all around.
You do the snowman pokey and you turn your self around,
Two stomps on the ground.
You put your snowman in front
You put your snowman in back,
You put your snowman in front and you give your knee a whack.
You do the snowman pokey and you turn your self around,
Two stomps on the ground.
You touch your snowman to your head,
You touch your snowman to your toe,
You touch your snowman to your head and you shake it to and fro,
You do the snowman pokey and your turn your self around,
Two stomps on the ground.

Let's make a tiny snowball
(make a small circle with hands)
Till it gets big and round;
(Make a large circle)
Let's roll it through the snowdrifts--(Pretend to push through the snow)
It doesn't make a sound!
(Whisper these words)
Give snowman head and eyes
(Point to head and eyes)
A broom for him to hold
(Pretend to hold broom)

(Point to each)
So snowman won't get cold!
(Pretend to shiver)

A chubby little snowman (circle arms out wide)
With a carrot nose (point to nose)
Along came a rabbit (hold up 2 fingers like ears and “hop” hand around)
And what do you suppose?
That hungry little rabbit (rub tummy)
Looking for his lunch (pretend to look around)
Ate that little snowman’s nose (point to nose)
Nibble, nibble, CRUNCH! (make nibbling motion with hands and then clap
loudly on CRUNCH)
Five Little Snowmen Riding on a Sled
Five little snowmen riding on a sled (hold up five fingers – lay them on
your palm “sled”)
One fell off and bumped his head (one finger falls off – rub head)

“No more snowmen riding on a sled!” (shake finger “no”)
Four little snowmen ….
End with…
Tell those snowmen it’s time to freeze (or melt) instead! (pretend to
freeze / melt)
You Are My Snowman
(Tune: You Are My Sunshine)
You are my snowman,
My only snowman.
You make me happy,
On days of gray.
And when the sun's out,
You'll hear us all shout.
Please don't take our snowman away!
