Southern Districts Agricultural Society
celebrates 156 years of the Busselton Show
Your Society, whichis responsible for the Busselton Show,is 156 years old thisyear.
We wouldlike to takealittleofyour time to tell youthe history of the BusseltonShow.
The Southern Districts AgriculturalSociety has grown from a very smallbeginningin the
year 1861 to be one of the major showsin this vast state of ours.
The settlers of the 1860’s were still‘breakingin’ newlandbutthis agriculturalsociety that
they formed was set onvery firm foundations.
Theinitial shows wereacombination of agricultureand horticultural displays and was mainly
stagedtopay outbounties for fox tails and cockatoos.
The first show was heldonland on the site of theoldCouncil Chambers at thecorner of
Adelaideand Queen Streets(where Jacksons Art Supplies now stands).
It was probably a modest affair and there was no‘gate’ due to the absenceof fences of any
kind. In the followingyears, the show moved to where thelibrary now stands.
During the 1920’ and 1930’s themerry-go rounds and other rides, the favourite haunts of the
young people, were set up on what was thenknownas Barnard’s Yard, opposite the
Commercial Hotel, as there wasinsufficient room for them on the show grounds.
Finallyin 1946 the show was transferred to Churchill Park, its presentsite. In the ensuing
years this has been transformedby hardworkingcommitteesinto one of the most attractive
country show groundsin the state.
