Bob’s Babblings
Strangers in a foreign land. That is what Mary Ann and I felt like recently. We both wanted to
get some pinstriping done on our motorcycles. I wanted flames and Mary Ann wanted her
feathers and dream catchers and an eagle nicknamed “Shorty”. Ask her about it. The best guy
we have met is now living in North Carolina. He still gets back in the Midwest and we checked
out his schedule and saw that he was set to be in Richland Center, Wisconsin at the end of July.
He was working out of a Honda and Yamaha dealer. He said he can stripe any bike and to come
on down. We had 9am appointments on a Saturday morning so we went the Friday before and
stayed in a motel so we didn’t have to get up early and ride 3 hours and then have to clean up the
bikes. It was this dealers “rendezvous” weekend for former customers. When we checked in
and cleaned the bikes I went back out to get something out of my bike. There were several bikes
and people in the lot and usually all bikers chat about where we are from and things like that.
They literally turned their backs to me. I wasn’t even trying to sell them raffle tickets. I told
Mary Ann how rude they were.
The next morning at the dealer we
heard comments about what the
heck are Harleys doing in the
service area getting striped. The
people who work at the dealer
were very nice. They even
offered up Gold Wings for test
rides. Mary Ann ran like a
vampire when someone makes a
cross. I took one out and was not
very impressed. For one thing the
horn is where the turn signal
should be and when I went to pull
out and blew the horn I pretended
to wave to someone so I didn’t look too stupid. I’ll stick with my Harley. Some of the older

folks on Honda trikes were very nice but most “wingers” were not. We were sitting having
lunch and I was watching some enterprising young girls wash bikes and serve chicken wings (I
think they were from a wildlife refuge named after owls) and a Harley rolled in to get washed.
Someone at our table said very loudly that they should be allowed to refuse to wash bikes like
that. We couldn’t wait to get out of there. Mary Ann was rapping her pipes very loudly going
through the lot when we were leaving and I asked her what she was doing. She said let them
hear what a real bike sounds like. We were glad to get out without me smarting off to them.

August 2010 Meeting Minutes
The meeting was called to order by Bob Anderson, Director.
The pledge of allegiance was led by Randy Fay.
Patches are available at the front table. Large ones are $32 and small ones are $15.
Bob announced that all of the raffle tickets are out. Bob will be contacting everyone who still
has books out for an update on your progress. The drawing is coming up quick.

Meet Other HOG Members
By Jeff Williams
This month, we meet Frank Fawcett.
Frank Fawcett (in his own
words)
You got to get to know me!
I was raised in a hardware store
for the most part. My dad
bought different stores so I
went to seven different schools
for the first seven grades. Being
a red head freckled face boy
with the name Fawcett taught
me how to meet people. If you
knew me in high school,
college or Marshall MN you would call me 'Paco'.
I lived mostly in Minnesota but did some short stints in Iowa and North Dakota. After college I
bought a hardware store in Slayton, MN and then 10 months later one in Int'l Falls which we
owned for 20 years [finally settled down]. My wife Cindy and I raised three girls there. We lived
on Rainy Lake until the girls got so busy in school / sports that we moved into town. Rainy Lake
will always be my favorite spot in MN. We currently have six grandkids that keep life
interesting. Two in Montana, which gives us a good excuse for a long bike, ride. We sold the
store in 93' when Merrill Lynch wanted me to join their firm. I left Merrill Lynch about three
years ago to join RBC Wealth Management, which is a Minnesota based company. I'm a
Portfolio Manager / Financial Consultant that manages discretionary strategies for my clients.
My hobbies are woodworking, fishing, golfing, hockey twice a week, and riding. Recently riding
has dominated all other hobbies.
The first bike I rode was a Heritage Special,
which I traded for a Ultra Classic which was a
better fit for what Cindy and I wanted to do. I
also own a Road King called "Currency
Exchange" (see picture) that I modified or
customized. I love the Ultra for long trips but the
Road King puts a smile on my face just sitting
on it in the garage. I love the freedoms that
biking brings to me. I've met so many nice
people in our club and on the road. It's an
adventure each time you ride. The best ride I've

taken was the trip Cindy and I took to Montana and Yellowstone because it was our maiden
voyage plus I got to see our granddaughter in Three Forks. The trip this year to the Smokey
Mountains ranks very high also. I'm definitely going back!
The most stupid thing that I did on a bike is a growing list! When you have a low IQ like mine it
is never just one thing. I try to follow an old airplane rule and make all your landings equal your
takeoffs. The list:
1. Didn't get the kickstand locked while showing the neighbors my new Ultra
2. I never rode a bike until the first time I drove the Heritage Special home. I practiced at
HD around the buildings while Judy watched. I only did left hand turns there so when I
came to a right hand turn and could not steer the thing around the corner and had to brake
before running in to a car waiting to turn. Nobody told me you had to push to steer.
3. Dumped it in the HD parking lot for our very first HOG ride and I wasn't the first one
there. Slow right turn while applying the front brake! Ahaa.
4. Raced two bikers down I-90 on the way to Sturgis this year because they pissed me off.
The most irritating thing that I came across biking was when those 2 bikers pulled along side of
me while I was passing a Semi. Sure glad I had the "Currency Exchange" with the modified
engine when I decided to leave their company as they tried to stay with me!
If you think this letter is
long, try talking to me! Take
Care, God Bless.
Frank also included a
picture of Laura Klock, the
world's fastest women on a
bagger bike, sitting on
Frank’s bike. She and her
two daughters have all set
world records.

Circle Tour 2010
We left for our Circle Tour on August 1st at around 8:00 a.m. The “we” included Bob, Mary
Ann, Jeff, Julie and Gary. The weather was beautiful as we started out on our journey. Once we
got past the cities we encountered a bit of rain. (Bob stopped to put on rain gear – imagine that).
It only rained for a little while and about 20 minutes later we stopped again to remove our rain
gear. We wanted to by-pass the heart of Duluth due to the Tall Ships exhibit and construction in
town. Thanks to Dean Anderson for the great directions on how to avoid the traffic and
construction. We stopped in Two Harbors for lunch and then ended up in Grand Marais for the
night. We donned our rain gear once again in Grand Marais and went out for dinner. That was
the extent of us wearing our rain
gear. Day 2 we rode from Grand
Marais to Marathon, Ontario.
We crossed the border into
Canada which was a breeze.
The border patrol person didn’t
even ask for everyone’s
passport. He asked Mary Ann if
she had any guns, weapons or
mace. She said no and then he
asked what she was doing. She
said going around Lake Superior
and he just waived her through.
We stopped at Thunder Bay
Harley Davidson which to our
surprise they had remodeled and
expanded. It is really nice in there now. We
enjoyed the scenery on our way to Marathon.
The black bear on the side of the road was a bit
hairy. He looked at us and I think he gave us a
thumbs up before he scampered into the woods
proclaiming “hey Boo Boo – where’s the pic-anic basket”? We ended up staying at the
Travelodge in Marathon. We were all tired and
decided to just eat at the hotel. BIG MISTAKE.
It took forever to get served and the meal was
not very good. Day 3 we left Marathon and had
great weather. Our first stop was in White
River, Ontario Canada which is the birth place of
Winnie the Pooh. The scenery in Canada is
breathtaking. Each curve showed a more
panoramic view of lakes and woods. We did see
several deer which luckily stayed off the road.
The bridge to cross back into the U.S. at Sault
Ste. Marie only took us an hour and forty five
minutes. Bob went through first and took so
long we were sure he was trying to sell the
border patrol guy a raffle ticket. It was a little

disheartening to see our U.S. flag flying all
tattered and torn. Maybe they should use
some of that toll money we paid to buy a
new flag. Once we crossed we decided to
ride to Munising. We rode through the
White Fish Bay Scenic Byway which is
very heavily wooded. The clouds started
rolling in and we had a quick rain shower
which actually felt good. We continued
on our way in sunshine, however as we
started getting closer to our hotel the
clouds started forming again. The race
was on as to whether we would make it to
the hotel first or if the sky would open up
on us. Bob reverted back into Chicago driving mode and we rolled heavily on our throttles. We
Won. We pulled into the hotel lot and parked under the canopy. The guys went in to register
and the wind really picked up and the rain started to come down in sheets. This only lasted a few
minutes but we really would have been soaked if we would have been riding in it. Day 4 we left
Munising for Ashland, WI by way of Copper Harbor. They were doing construction on all the
roads leading to Copper Harbor but we decided to go anyway. The scenery once again was
spectacular. We were headed out of Copper Harbor and Bob heard on the local radio station that
the bridge between Houghton and Hancock was stuck in the up position. We found out that this
is the only bridge off of the Peninsula. The locals reacted like Chicken Little proclaiming that it
could be hours if not days until the bridge re-opened. Well – after sitting for a couple of hours
we began to believe them. We were just in the process of cancelling our reservations in Ashland
when the bridge reopened. We all hopped on our bikes as quick as possible and made it to the
other side. Of course by us being delayed, we were caught in a rain shower about 10 minutes
from our hotel. (Notice a pattern here?). When we got to the hotel folks that were already there
told us it hadn’t even sprinkled there. Day 5 was our day to see eagles. There was one in a tree
right across from our hotel. We saw 2 more along the side of the road. One took off (luckily in
the other direction). What a magnificent site that was. We were hoping to not have any more
delays on bridges, however as we were going to cross over from Nelson to Wabasha we were
delayed by construction. It was a really good trip. What other things happened along the way
stay along the way – however there was that soap and toothbrush incident.
