Adult learning can improve employability and income, which is a key pathway to realising a range of other benefits. About Knox Learning Alliance What is the KLA? The Knox Learning Alliance has been established by the five Neighbourhood Houses and Learning Centres in Knox to provide a collaborative response to the adult learning needs of the Knox Community. The Knox Learning Alliance provides a range of services and programs; • Government funded pre accredited training • Careers guidance and advice services • Accredited training with government funding for eligible students • Adult literacy and numeracy • VCAL and Adult VCE • Fee for service and government funded training for local employers • Short courses for recreation, personal development and hobbies • Advice on navigating the training environment Pre accredited training The Knox Learning Alliance members are funded via the Adult Community and Further Education Board to provide a range of Pre-accredited programs to the Knox community. These programs are short modular courses designed for learners to gain confidence and skills. They focus on creating pathways to nationally accredited training or employment. Due to the government funding they are very affordable. Pre-accredited training addresses the particular needs of those adults who have experienced barriers to education in the past and find it difficult to undertake accredited programs as their first step back into education and training. • Employment Skills - Training in basic skills to support work or further learning, such as communications, teamwork and problem solving, job search skills. • Vocational Programs - Vocational education that assists people with skills acquisition required for specific occupations to start work, return to work or to change jobs. • Adult Literacy and Numeracy - Training in literacy and numeracy skills including teaching English language to people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, for example English as an Additional Language (EAL). Accredited training Two members of the Knox Learning Alliance, Mountain District Learning Centre and Coonara Community House are Registered Training Organisations delivering nationally accredited training with funding from the Victorian Training Guarantee. The Victorian Training Guarantee makes vocational training more accessible to people who do not hold a post-school qualification, or who want to gain a higher level qualification than they already hold. In 2015 you are eligible for a government-subsidised training place if you are: • an Australian citizen or • an Australian Permanent Resident (holder of a permanent visa) or • a New Zealand citizen • and are either of the following: • under 20 years of age or • 20 years and older and ‘upskilling’ by seeking to enrol in a course at a higher level than your existing qualification Adult literacy and numeracy Adults who are looking to improve their levels of literacy and numeracy can enrol at MDLC or through the Outer Eastern Literacy Program (OELP). Everyday Learning Programs help build skills in English and Maths. Classes at OELP are suitable for people who may have English as a second language and others who want to improve reading, writing, spelling, conversation and speaking skills. Alternative secondary education MDLC offers a secondary education program for students who are looking for an alternative setting to mainstream school education or have had an interrupted education and are looking to re-connect and successfully complete their secondary education. Students can study the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) at Foundation (Yr 10), Intermediate (Yr 11) and Senior (Yr 12) levels. VCAL provides a pathway to further vocational training at a TAFE or other training organisation. The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) is available for young people and adult learners who are looking to achieve this important educational milestone. The VCE is a pathway to tertiary study and further education. What is a neighbourhood house?
