Mayor’s Message
I was elected to the position of Mayor in
2007 after serving on the City Council
since 2003. A long time resident of Clawson, I am a licensed social worker with a
Master’s Degree through Eastern Michigan University. Prior to becoming an elected official of the City, I served as a member of the Zoning
Board of Appeals. I have five children and nine grandchildren. I am on the committees for Youth Assistance, Optimist
Club, Farmers Market, Coalition, 4th of July, theater and
scouting. I love our city of collaboration where our community, business and churches celebrate together.
You are invited to join me and City Council Members
for the 2017 State of the City Address on Wednesday March
15, 8-10 am. Cost is $20, includes breakfast and seating is
limited. For those wishing to hear the speech by not joining in
the breakfast, you may attend at 8:45am. You will also be
able to hear the State of the Schools, State of the Chamber
Address and the Awards Ceremony Thank you to the
Clawson Chamber for sponsoring this annual event. Diversified Credit Union, Rotary Club, Healthchoice of Michigan, C &
G newspapers and Gateway Country Day School and Childcare are co-sponsors of the event.
Our master plan is scheduled for approval in June
2017. I hope you had an opportunity to complete a survey or
talk with council or staff about your vision for Clawson. We
love to hear your idea’s. Clawson is not just a community of
houses but a community of homes. It’s where we live. We do
love to live, work and play within our 2.2 square mile City.
We are working on our budget and capital improvement plan. The next public budget meetings are April 11, 19
and 25, 7pm at City Hall.
A little free library is coming to Clawson. The book
box, donated by Paperback Trade In (145 E. 14 Mile) is available now with books for you to take, read and share. Look for
the little library. Help share the power of reading, building
community, sparking creativity and inspiring readers.

Clawson Fire Department Reminders
Pets in the Park
Don’t forget these important details this winter!
Dogs are welcome, though it is important that pet owners
take measures to ensure the safety and welfare of both their
animals and the public. We want to remind residents to:
■ Please protect your dog from harm and respect your neighbor’s rights by always leashing your dog. It is unlawful for pets
to be on any public property without an adequate leash; and
■ Please be aware that it is your responsibility to pick-up after
your dog and dispose of waste properly. Always carry a receptacle for clean-up, such as a plastic bag, to discard litter. Our
goal is to keep our parks clean and maintain a pleasant environment for both dog owners and others.
■ The Clawson Fire Department recommends that you check
smoke and carbon monoxide alarms periodically and
change batteries when you change your clocks to ensure
proper operation. Any smoke alarm older than ten (10)
years old should be replaced with a new one. Carbon
Monoxide alarms older than seven (7) years should be
replaced.
■ The Clawson Fire Department would like to remind
residents that in the event of a fire response on your street,
our firefighters may park their personal vehicles in your
driveway for a short time. We do this to keep the street
clear for additional emergency vehicles or the repositioning
of our apparatus. Should you have an issue and need to get
out of your driveway, please contact the officer in charge
and we will move the vehicle as soon as possible.
■ Spring is a prime time for storms that may affect the
power lines. We ask all residents to be careful around
downed or arcing wires. In the event of a down or arcing
power line please notify the fire department immediately,
stay away and keep pets inside.
Change Your Clocks—And Your Batteries!
Spring forward on Sunday, March 12! The Clawson Fire
Department would like to remind you that this is a great
time to test the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon
monoxide detectors. Always remember to check the
manufacture date and replace any units that are
more than 10 years old!

Severe Weather Awareness Week
Thunderstorms, windstorms, floods and tornadoes are all
forms of severe weather, and each pose a threat to the safety
and well-being of Michigan citizens.
Because of this, Governor Rick Snyder and County
Executive L. Brooks Patterson have declared the
week of April 16-22 as Severe Weather Awareness Week!
In an effort to promote tornado safety preparedness, Clawson
will conduct a special test and activation of the outdoor
warning system on Wednesday, April 19 at 1pm.

Spanish Immersion Montessori Preschool & Daycare - Ages 3 months-6 years
Hunter Community Center
Founder & Director: Maria Van Dyke
(248) 597-9932 / (248) 797-6947 / www.spanishfortoddlers.com
Spanish for Toddlers is a Spanish immersion program that uses the Montessori philosophy. It is one of a few schools in the
USA that combines the Montessori philosophy of education with language immersion schooling, and has been enjoying steady
growth since February 2002.
■ The Spanish environment surrounding our activities enables your child to develop a functional use of Spanish at the
same time as practicing early childhood educational concepts. The curriculum also incorporates group activities to
reinforce the fun of Spanish language in song, movement and games.
■ This program is designed for children who have no previous knowledge of Spanish as well as for those who already
speak the language.
A minimum of 2 days attendance is required for infant room and preschool. School runs Mon – Fri 7:30am – 6:00pm. Class
hours are 9:00am – 12:00pm, and extended care is available. Preschool runs from September 7, 2016 to June 8, 2017.
Applications are accepted throughout the year. Open during summer as well.
After School Program – Ages 6-10 years old
This program will be a fun way for your children to reinforce and practice their Spanish skills and learn new vocabulary
after school. The class is taught in a play-based method by a native Spanish speaker who will make a fun class for the
students. This class is still forming, so call us to inquire about schedule and pricing.
Summer Camp 2017 – June 19-August 25
This is a fantastic opportunity for children to enjoy camp and Latin culture, and to experience an introduction to our preschool.

SNAG Golf Program - Ages 5 to 10
Skyhawks Golf focuses on building the confidence of young
athletes through proper technique and refining the essential
skills of the game. To assist in this training, Skyhawks has
adopted the SNAG (Starting New At Golf) system which uses
modified equipment to its curriculum developed by PGA professionals, SNAG is specifically designed for the entry-level
player; SNAG simplifies instruction so that young players can
make an easy & effective transition onto the golf course. No
need to bring your own clubs, all equipment is provided. For
safety reasons we keep the instructor to camper ratio for
this program very low, resulting in limited ability. Campers
should wear appropriate clothing and golf shoes (or
comfortable athletic shoes), and bring sunscreen, two
snacks & water bottle.

Know The Buzz About West Nile Virus
West Nile Virus (WNV) is a potentially serious illness.
Experts believe it is established as a seasonal epidemic in
North America that flares up in the summer and continues
into the fall. It can infect humans, birds, horses and some
other mammals. In a small number of people infected by
the virus, the disease can be serious, even fatal.
WNV is most often spread to humans by the bite of an
infected mosquito that gets infected by biting a bird
that carries the virus. Horses and other mammals bitten
by mosquitoes that carry the virus can also become
infected. Whenever mosquitoes are active there is a risk
of getting WNV. The risk is highest from late July
through September.
The best way to avoid WNV infection is to prevent mosquito bites:
■ Use insect repellent. The Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) recommends the use of insect repellents
containing active ingredients registered with the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
■ Always follow manufacturer’s directions carefully, especially
when using on children.
■ Wear protective clothing such as long sleeved shirts and pants.
■ Limit outdoor activity between dusk and dawn when
mosquitoes are most active.
■ Avoid areas where mosquitoes may be present (i.e. shaded
and wooded areas).
■ Maintain window and door screens to keep mosquitoes out of
buildings.
■ Get rid of mosquito breeding sites by emptying standing water
that collects in birdbaths, boats, buckets, tires, unused pools,
roof gutters and other containers.
