Changing Perspectives
Dear Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana,
Thank you. Being matched with my Big Brother over 16 years ago is the main reason why I am in the
position to be a mentor today. When I reflect on the impact this program has had on my life, I can’t help
but go back to the year 1995 on my mother’s black and white couch where it all began. I was blessed to
have been paired with Dennis Bland (President, Center for Leadership Development) from age ten until I
was eighteen - I still have the photo from our match introduction! From attending Indiana Pacers games
and Indianapolis Colts games, to the annual Big Brothers Big Sisters SummerFest picnic, having the
companionship of an adult role model did wonders for what I thought about my future.
Now a Big Brother myself, my Little Brother Kaleb and I recently celebrated one year of being matched
together. In that year, I observed a significant amount of growth in his academics, behavior in school,
and his respect toward others. The growth that Kaleb has exhibited over this past year can be attributed
to core values that were instilled in me when I was a Little Brother. It is my hope that I am around to
witness the kind of man that Kaleb will become.
We tend to focus on the benefits a child receives from having a mentor, but one rarely realizes all of the
benefits an adult receives from serving in the role of a mentor. Since being matched, I view the world
with a different perspective. I have become a more patient person and I have made sure to make an
effort in portraying the kind of man that Kaleb can model after and become greater than. It is my hope
that someday, my Little Brother Kaleb will benefit from the effects of being a mentor by doing the same
for another child in need of a positive relationship.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is a program that truly has the ability to promote change in the lives of many in
the community. More than just being a part of it, I believe in the vision of it. I am a product of the vision.
I was fortunate to have had a Big Brother of my own and I am most proud of my biggest investment,
giving another deserving kid in central Indiana an opportunity to experience the friendship, support,
love, and time that all kids are entitled to. The greatest thing about this investment is that there is a
return on it; I’ll receive mine the day I get an email with a picture of Kaleb and his Little Brother.
Sincerely,
Michael E. James, Jr.

Changing Lives
1995: Dennis & Michael
Michael James was ten years old when his mother enrolled him in the Big Brothers Big
Sisters program. Michael had very little contact with his father and wanted a positive
male role model who would help him develop the self-confidence he needed to succeed.
In 1995, he was matched with his Big Brother, Dennis Bland, and both of their lives were
changed forever. Dennis was instrumental in Michael’s life, regularly spending time with
him and always modeling the importance of family, hard work, education, and serving
others. Dennis, along with Michael’s mother, served as a constant support system for
Michael, and their relationship did not end when he turned eighteen. Michael shares,
“Dennis attended my high school and college graduations, wedding, and helped me land my
first job as a fourth grade teacher. Dennis was always there when I needed him and helped
shape me into the man I have become today.”
2012: Michael & Kaleb
In 2012, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana introduced Michael to his Little Brother
Kaleb at his home where he also met Kaleb’s mother, Asheli, and his grandmother. As they
began to spend time together, Michael noticed that Kaleb struggled with many of the same
issues that he had as a young boy and shared, “Every opportunity that Kaleb and I get to
connect is an opportunity for me to learn from him, and many times as he is talking, it feels as if
I’m looking at myself sixteen years ago. The experience is truly humbling.” In the year and a half
since they were matched, Kaleb has demonstrated a great deal of growth in his attitude
toward school and behavior toward others. According to Kaleb’s mother, “My son has
changed so much academically and behaviorally since he has had a Big Brother in his life. He is
a normal ten year old, and he does make bad choices from time to time, but the difference now
is that he realizes the consequences of those choices. Kaleb is discovering his potential and I am
truly grateful for Michael’s presence in his life.”
The Big Impact of Mentoring
“While it is difficult to summarize my experience as a Big Brother, I can say without question that
investing in Michael’s development has enriched my own life in many ways. Michael has made
me better. To observe Michael move from a young, inquisitive, wide-eyed child to an
outstanding young man who is thriving personally, academically and professionally is
immeasurably fulfilling and rewarding. However, to witness Michael become a successful young
man who decided to in turn become a Big Brother to Kaleb is beyond my imagination. Because
I have had the benefit of watching Michael grow, become successful and make the commitment
to invest in others, I am confident my time as Big Brother has been a wonderful investment.
Kaleb is in excellent hands. My deepest gratitude goes to Big Brothers Big Sisters for playing a
role in enriching my life, and in return, the lives of many others.” - Dennis Bland, Big Brother to

Letter from the Board President & CEO
Dear Friend of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana,
Do you remember what it meant to have someone who encouraged you to believe in yourself, to work
hard in school and in life to achieve your full potential? Stories like the one between Big Brother Dennis
Bland, Big Brother & Little Brother Michael James, and Little Brother Kaleb remind us of the
transformative power of strong and enduring mentoring relationships. While we often recognize the
impact of mentoring on a child’s life, we often forget the significant impact one mentoring relationship
can have on a volunteer, a parent/caregiver and family, a school, and so many others in our community.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana truly appreciates the many individuals and organizations
that joined us in our mission to invest in our youth and our community this past year. With the help of
many, we are proud to have made and supported 1,203 mentoring relationships. New partnerships
were formed to expand the depth and scale of our service. Innovative program enhancements resulted
in longer, stronger mentoring relationships. Generous support enabled ground-breaking research
through local, statewide, and national projects. We also celebrated our largest graduating class of Bigs
and Littles, with most having been matched for seven years or longer and establishing bonds that will
last a lifetime.
Relationships like those of Dennis, Michael, and Kaleb are changing lives and transforming our
community. We recognize the importance of our mission and are grateful for the opportunity to serve
so many amazing girls and boys with the support of so many generous people. On behalf of
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana, thank you for your continued investment, and we are
honored to share our successes with you in this Annual Report.
Sincerely,
Todd Ryden 2012-2014 Board President Darcey Palmer-Shultz
Chief Executive Officer

Agency Overview
Our vision is that all children achieve success in life.
The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana is to provide children
facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported 1-to-1
relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana, a United Way agency, partners with parents/guardians,
volunteers and others in the community to hold ourselves accountable for each child in our program
achieving: educational success, avoidance of risky behaviors and higher aspirations, greater confidence
and better relationships.
In 2013, BBBSCI served 1,203 children between the ages of 8 and 18 in Marion,
Hamilton, and Johnson Counties.
Following a thorough volunteer screening process, adult volunteers (Bigs) are matched with youth
(Littles). Volunteers meet with their Littles two to four times a month for 12 months or longer. Each
“match” receives continuing support, training and coaching through their professionally trained Match
Support Specialist. The agency also provides youth development opportunities, educational activities,
and discounts throughout the relationship.
Big Brothers Big Sisters produces proven results.
Big Brothers Big Sisters measures youth progress through the Youth Outcome Survey, with 95% of
youth maintaining or improving in four or more of the following significant outcome areas after one
year of BBBS mentoring:
Social Acceptance
Scholastic Competence
Educational Expectations
Attitudes Toward Risky Behaviors
Parental Trust
Special Adult
Youth progress in these areas is linked to longer-term outcomes, such as high school graduation,
avoidance of juvenile delinquency and college or job readiness.

2013 Giving Sum Partner
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana was the recipient of the 2013 Giving Sum
grant to support a partnership with the Youth Philanthropy Initiative of Indiana
(YPII). The goal of this partnership is to engage Bigs and Littles in philanthropy and
service learning activities using a philanthropy toolkit while fostering deeper
relationships between Bigs and Littles. Big Brother Brian Richmond and Little
Brother Matt were the first match to receive the “Phil and his Family’s Adventures
in Giving” philanthropy toolkit.
“The philanthropy toolkit helped Brian and I start a new relationship and sealed the
deal for a long bond between us. We have learned that there are many ways to serve
your own community and a lot of fun options for matches to give back while spending
time together!” - Matt, Little Brother

“Match Mentors” Offers Unique Experience for Matches & Donors
David and Jessica Lindsey, who founded and lead DEFENDER Direct, and their three children – sponsored
“Match Mentors” – a series of activities for a group of Bigs and Littles. Big Brother Michael Cranfill and Little
Brother Henry, matched three years, have participated in “Match Mentors,” including an event at Meridian
Hills Country Club, a dinner and performance of
the Yuletide Celebration at Hilbert Circle Theater,
and an event hosted at the Lindsey family’s home.
“This program continuously introduces Henry and
myself to new experiences that we share together,
and with other Bigs and Littles. We have made new
friends and every event has focused on the
importance of giving back to your community,
as well as, living a morally sound and well-rounded
life.” - Michael Cranfill, Big Brother

Take Your Little to Work Day
On January 28, 2013, Littles joined their Bigs at 26
different companies for “Take Your Little to Work Day.”
The event is designed as a career exploration day for
Littles and an opportunity for Bigs’ co-workers to
experience the friendship and learning that takes
place between a Big and a Little. Little Brother
Kameron spent the day at DEFENDER Direct with Big
Couple, Ian and Amanda Ereces.
“While spending the day with my Big Couple at the place
where they work, I learned to never stop listening and
growing in the work place and the small changes that
you make can have a big impact. I can’t wait until the
day I get a job!” - Kameron, Little Brother

2012 Mike’s Mentors Kids
On August 18, 2012, Mike’s Carwash donated over $51,000 to Big Brothers
Big Sisters of Central Indiana for the fourth annual “Mike’s Mentors Kids.” This
one-day event involves Bigs, Littles, local media personalities, and the team
at every Mike’s Carwash location selling “the Works” carwashes to raise money
for BBBS agencies throughout Indiana and Ohio.
“The Mike’s Mentors Kids event is much more than an opportunity to give back to
our community; it’s a chance to witness Bigs and Littles in action and to see their
commitment toward each other - it is so inspiring for our team and truly one of
our favorite days of the year at Mike’s!” - Bill Dahm, CEO,
Mike’s

2013 Celebrate Mentoring!
38 Bigs and Littles graduated from the Big Brothers Big Sisters program during the Celebrate Mentoring!
graduation event sponsored by Taco Bell. Over $25,000 in scholarships were awarded, Charles “Charlie” W.
Brown was recognized with the 2013 Community Mentor Award, and the agency honored Annette Perry
with the inaugural Charles W. Brown Distinguished Staff Award. For the third year in a row, Nordstrom
provided professional outfits for all of the 2013 graduating matches to wear during the event.
“The event highlights the impact of mentoring relationships in our community and
allows us to celebrate the achievements and dedication of our volunteers and youth.
I was honored to be a part of recognizing the 38 Bigs and Littles who graduated from
our program this year. It was meaningful to hear the testimonials from my friends,
colleagues, and in particular the Big Brothers Big Sisters staff when receiving the
Community Mentor Award – an award that came about because of my friend, Larry
Sablosky, an individual who demonstrates a passion for developing the potential of
others.” – Charlie Brown, Past Board President & friend of the agency

Class of 2013: Match Spotlight
Big Brother Walter Hankins and Little Brother Kameron, just one of 38
graduating matches, were matched in 2006. During their seven years
together, Walter has witnessed Kameron overcome adversity to grow
into a confident young man with a positive vision for his future.
“Through this program, I have recognized a calling to positively affect the
lives of youth. I intend to study social work and education at Kentucky
State University this fall as a way or repaying the debt I owe to my Big
Brother and so many people who helped place a young boy on a path for
success. My ultimate goal is to be able to save the lives of children who
face some sort of daily struggle.” - Kameron, Little Brother

Stronger Bonds Between Big Sisters, Little Sisters & Moms
The Women’s Fund of Central Indiana supported a program
to strengthen the bond between Big Sisters, Little Sisters, and
mothers as the relationship between Bigs and moms is critical
to the match’s duration. Big Sister Jo Ann Wallis, Little Sister
Kennedy, and Kennedy’s mother LaTasha, have participated in
two of the activities in 2013.
“Since participating in these events with my daughter and her
Big Sister, I feel a connection that has made a world of difference
in our relationship with each other. Spending time together has
built a strong bond of trust between the three of us. It’s a blessing
for Kennedy to have a Big Sister, but it is even more amazing to
be able to spend time with someone who loves Kennedy just as
much as I do.” - LaTasha Keith, Mother

Enhancements Result in Longer, Stronger Relationships

to launch a Six Sigma Project focused on efforts to improve intentionality of the match relationship.
