Summer 1
Year 4 visited the Ashmolean Museum,
Oxford. The boys had a chance to see some important work by Barbara Hepworth and learn about
sculptures. Then in the Western Galleries
they studied impressionist paintings using sketchbooks to record their observations. We also walked
through the Young Art Oxford exhibition to see
our young artists work on show.

Year 4 visited the RSC in Stratford to take part in a
workshop based around Shakespeare’s play
‘Twelfth Night’. We had lots of fun learning about
the theatre in Shakespeare’s time. We explored
some of the important characters in the play and
acted out the scene where Malvolio shows Olivia
his yellow tights with cross garters. Everyone got
in role and the instructor was impressed by all the
budding actors we have in

Mr Tom Farrell visited Year 3 to
talk about his experiences as a
World War Two evacuee and
read extracts from his book,
‘Tim Oliver, Evacuee!’ He described in wonderful detail the
reality of being a child during the
war and what it was like moving
from a city to the countryside.
His rendition of collecting shrapnel was an episode that had the
whole school gripped. To read
more of these exciting tales head
down to the library where there
are several copies.

3E’s class assembly was on Thursday 9 May, and they
enjoyed telling the rest of the school about how they
had turned into world-saving superheroes! In class,
we even managed to help save the world by growing
our own food (cress!) and feeding it to
Podge the hamster!
In preparation for their Science topic after half term on
Helping Plants Grow Well, Year 3 have been planting
potatoes in the school garden. We are looking forward
to harvesting them!

Summer 1
As part of the CDT curriculum, Architecture Workshop once again visited the school to work with boys in Years 2, 4 and
6. The aim of the 3D workshop was to give the boys some open ended problem solving, where group work was encouraged to construct some large scale structures.
Year 4 studied the structure of bridges and used wooden dowel and rubber bands to make trusses. Whether a suspension
bridge or a simple beam bridge, the boys had to display their group work for others to admire. The results were spectacular with some structures reaching to a great height. Other more intricate designs were built on a smaller scale but all were
proud of their achievements. Working as a team was crucial to the success of the project and incorporating and valuing
ideas and opinions proved a challenge in itself!
Year 4 have since studied the structure of the school footbridge and designed their own model bridge. Excellent examples
made of wood and acrylic will be displayed in the main corridor after Half Term. The creativity and originality of the
work is most impressive with many safety features being taken into account. Well done!
Summer 1
Children’s Day is a Japanese National Holiday, celebrated on 5 May. It is more widely known as Boys’ day since there is
also a Girls’ day later in the year. In the run-up to the 5th, houses and apartments around Japan display koi carp streamers
outside their front doors. On Friday 3 May, Year 3 enjoyed a Creative Day based around the theme of Children’s Day.
They took part in a variety of activities including report writing, origami, writing their names in Japanese characters,
discussing the formation of Mount Fuji and making Koi Carp kites using batik. We were fortunate that Akemi Wedmore
offered to come in and share her expertise. The morning finished with the boys trying traditional Japanese treats which
the Wedmores kindly brought in for us all. All the boys had a wonderful time trying the different activities on offer and
we’d like to thank all those involved with the day.
