This screen consists of 15 words for the child to pronounce. Each word has two sounds underlined, a beginning
sound and an ending or middle sound, each counting as one point. For instance, if the word is “spoon” and the child
says “poon”, the child scores 1 point (one point for the “n” sound, no points for the “sp” sound).
The screen starts with two sample words (with corresponding picture), “cake” and “dog,” which are not included in
the scoring. These words are only to help familiarize the child with the process.
The child does not lose points for not being able to name the picture.
Procedure:
Say to the child,” I am going to show you some pictures and I want you to tell me what they are called. Are you ready?”
Sample A: Show the child Sample A (cake), and say, “What is this?” If the child answers “cake”, say, “Yes, that’s a
picture of a cake”, and proceed to sample B. If the child uses another word to name the picture, say “What else could
you call this?” If the child does not come up with “cake,” say “That’s a picture of a cake; please say cake”, then proceed
to sample B. Follow the same procedure as sample A, then proceed to Item 1.
Use the same procedure as for the sample words and write the score for each word on the score sheet according to the
sounds the child produces. Total the columns, then add the two totals together to get the “Total Raw Score.” Cut-off
scores are included at the bottom of this page. Check “Pass,” “Rescreen” (see referral procedures), or “Refer.”
