Leadership Montgomery E-News Bi-weekly Page 1 of 12 2011-Volume V MAY "We graduate into the Leadership of Montgomery." ___________ from the Executive Director... Leadership Montgomery depends on your support in the form of dues to maintain our alumni program, to enable us to offer classes to new members and to help foster community service projects such as the school clean up campaign, the school supply drive, and our current project of assisting at risk high school students in locating tuition grants to attend technical schools and colleges. Some alumni adopt an attitude of graduating from the Leadership Montgomery program once their class is http://campaign.r20.constantcontact.com/render?llr=8lqnoncab&v=001OsO-C5786B0PXp... 5/16/2011 Leadership Montgomery E-News Bi-weekly Page 2 of 12 over. However, we encourage alumni to realize that they are actually graduating into the leadership of Montgomery, not out of it. The Leadership Montgomery organization then works within the community to find ways to engage the alumni in meaningful projects that enable alumni to continue to give back in a leadership capacity. This is the area in which your dues assists us most. I encourage each of you to support Leadership Montgomery by volunteering to serve in at least one area. A volunteer form can be found on the web page and also accompanies the dues invoice each year. I further challenge each of you to support the work Leadership Montgomery is doing by submitting your dues in one of the categories listed. We have tried to make it easy for you by enabling you to contribute on line via Visa, Master Card or American Express and by breaking your dues into installments. If there is anything else we can do to improve the program or further meet your needs, we want to hear your suggestions. This is your program, and we are here to serve you. Focus on the kind of relationship they want between our schools and community - not on individual complaints or demands. Begin working together in a new way to determine the future of our community and public schools. The Education Foundation and the Believe It process are independent of the Montgomery Public School System. School system leaders and the school board are ready to receive the outcome and report of this effort. After the conversations, Believe It will: Create a Community Agreement with the school system based on the community's collective voice. Serve as a mechanism for long-term accountability in reaching a shared vision for our students as described in the Community Agreement. Work with a collaborative structure of partners supporting public education. Involve as many community citizens as possible. Provide ongoing community engagement around improved performance for all students. Keep public education in the forefront of the community conversation. Why ? We believe in our children and their right to a quality education. We believe every citizen should have a voice in the long range plans of our school system We believe good things are happening in performance in some of our schools, but not all of our schools. We believe there are challenges that must be addressed. http://campaign.r20.constantcontact.com/render?llr=8lqnoncab&v=001OsO-C5786B0PXp... 5/16/2011 Leadership Montgomery E-News Bi-weekly Graduation Page 4 of 12 We believe that what happens in our schools affects EVERYONE in the community. Superintendent Thompson not only gave a brief synopsis of her perspective of recent events involving Montgomery Public Schools, but she also gave eager guests an exclusive preview of several proposals that she said she intends to present to the Board of Education in the near future. Mrs. Thompson spoke of her aspirations for a language emersion program at McKee Elementary School, a single-sex middle school to deter would-be male dropouts, on-line textbooks, and having BTW and Lamp share resources at the Sidney Lanier High School facility. After a Q&A session moderated by George Goodwyn of Class XVIII, Superintendent Thompson closed by reminding guests that early education, especially Pre-K, is the key to student retention and alleviating the dropout rate among our students. http://campaign.r20.constantcontact.com/render?llr=8lqnoncab&v=001OsO-C5786B0PXp... 5/16/2011 Leadership Montgomery E-News Bi-weekly Page 6 of 12 Baptist Health and the Institute for Patient Safety and Medical Simulation sponsored CLASS XXVII Health and Human Services Day ptist Health Institute for Patient Safety & Medical Simulation http://campaign.r20.constantcontact.com/render?llr=8lqnoncab&v=001OsO-C5786B0PXp... 5/16/2011 Leadership Montgomery E-News Bi-weekly Page 7 of 12 Judge Jimmy Pool listens to a simulated heart beat in a life-like mannequin at the simulation center during class day. The Test of a Leader: the "Nine Cs of Leadership by Lee Iacocca I've never been Commander in Chief, but I've been a CEO. I understand a few things about leadership at the top. I've figured out nine points-not ten (I don't want people accusing me of thinking I'm Moses). I call them the "Nine Cs of Leadership." They're not fancy or complicated. Just clear, obvious qualities that every true leader should have. So, here's my C list: A leader has to show CURIOSITY. He has to listen to people outside of the "Yes, sir" crowd in his inner circle. He has to read voraciously, because the world is a big, complicated place. Thomas Jefferson once said, "Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate for a moment to prefer the latter." If a leader never steps outside his comfort zone to hear different ideas, he grows stale. If he doesn't put his beliefs to the test, how does he know he's right? The inability to listen is a form of arrogance. It means either you think you already know it all, or you just don't care. A leader has to be CREATIVE, go out on a limb, be willing to try something different. You know, think outside the box. Leadership is all about managing change-whether you're leading a company or leading a country. Things change, and you get creative. You adapt. A leader has to COMMUNICATE. I'm not talking about running off at the mouth or spouting sound bites. I'm talking about facing reality and telling the truth. Communication http://campaign.r20.constantcontact.com/render?llr=8lqnoncab&v=001OsO-C5786B0PXp... 5/16/2011 Leadership Montgomery E-News Bi-weekly Page 10 of 12 has to start with telling the truth, even when it's painful. A leader has to be a person of CHARACTER. That means knowing the difference between right and wrong and having the guts to do the right thing. Abraham Lincoln once said, "If you want to test a man's character, give him power." A leader must have COURAGE. I'm talking about [guts]. (That even goes for female leaders.) Swagger isn't courage. Tough talk isn't courage. Courage in the twenty-first century doesn't mean posturing and bravado. Courage is a commitment to sit down at the negotiating table and talk. If you're a politician, courage means taking a position even when you know it will cost you votes. To be a leader you've got to have CONVICTION-a fire in your belly. You've got to have passion. You've got to really want to get something done. How do you measure fire in the belly? A leader should have CHARISMA. I'm not talking about being flashy. Charisma is the quality that makes people want to follow you. It's the ability to inspire. People follow a leader because they trust him. That's my definition of charisma. A leader has to be COMPETENT. That seems obvious, doesn't it? You've got to know what you're doing. More important than that, you've got to surround yourself with people who know what they're doing. A leader has to be a problem solver. You can't be a leader if you don't have COMMON SENSE. I call this Charlie Beacham's rule. When I was a young guy just starting out in the car business, one of my first jobs was as Ford's zone manager in WilkesBarre, Pennsylvania. My boss was a guy named Charlie Beacham, who was the East http://campaign.r20.constantcontact.com/render?llr=8lqnoncab&v=001OsO-C5786B0PXp... 5/16/2011 Leadership Montgomery E-News Bi-weekly Page 11 of 12 Coast regional manager. Charlie was a big Southerner, with a warm drawl, a huge smile, and a core of steel. Charlie used to tell me, "Remember, Lee, the only thing you've got going for you as a human being is your ability to reason and your common sense. If you don't know a dip of horseshit from a dip of vanilla ice cream, you'll never make it." http://campaign.r20.constantcontact.com/render?llr=8lqnoncab&v=001OsO-C5786B0PXp... 5/16/2011 Leadership Montgomery E-News Bi-weekly Page 12 of 12 Forward email This email was sent to [email protected] by [email protected] | Update Profile/Email Address | Instant removal with SafeUnsubscribeâ„¢ | Privacy Policy.
