K THE LEGEND OF ROBIN HOOD:
Robin Hood is famous for stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. In fact his name is so well-known it has been
adopted into popular culture as a term for someone that supposedly does this. Who was the original Robin Hood?
Tales about an English outlaw named Robin Hood have been told for centuries.
While the actual identity of Robin Hood has been lost in the mists of time, there is ample evidence that the character
is based on a real man, or perhaps different men contributing various qualities to the legend over a period of time.
From at least as early as the year 1228, the names Robinhood, Robehod, Rabunhod, or Hobbehod were used by English
justices as terms for fugitives or outlaws. At least by the fifteenth century, the exploits of an outlaw named Robin
Hood began to be celebrated in song and story.
Over the years Robin Hood has been identified with various historical figures, living in various places and times. For
example, some believe that the character is based on Robert the Earl of Huntington, who lived in the first half of the
thirteenth century. Other tales say that he was a commoner.
Here underneath this little stone
Lies Robert Earl of Huntington
Never archer there as he so good
And people called him Robin Hood
Such outlaws as him and his men
Will England never see again.
(This inscription also appears on a grave in the grounds of Kirklees Priory near Kirklees Hall, which it is said to be the final resting place)
The Robin Hood most commonly known today was a good man unjustly wronged by the Sherriff of Nottingham
(working with wicked Prince John). He surrounded himself with other good but unfairly treated men. He was loyal
to King Richard and was trying to protect the common people until Richard’s return from the crusades. One way
he did this was by robbing from the rich and corrupt and giving back to the poor and mistreated. He and his men
lived in Sherwood Forest, feasting daily on venison and other good things. He had a keen sense of humour and,
k3k
although he was highly skilled with the longbow, he was humble and could laugh at himself. Although he was a
noble, he treated his men as equals, almost as brothers. He was courageous, generous, intelligent, and charismatic.
These qualities have made him (or at least this romanticized, idealized concept of Robin Hood), a hero to generations
around the world, children and adults alike. In this sense, it doesn’t matter whether there was ever a real Robin Hood,
or what he was like.
K PLOT
The evil and greedy Sheriff of Nottingham arrests Robert, Earl of Huntington, on his wedding day with Lady Marian
and takes away his castle, land and title. Robert escapes to Sherwood Forest and, with the help of Little John and
Friar Tuck, starts a fight against the Sheriff. Robert becomes a leader to all England and changes his name to Robin
Hood. From the darkness, they steal from the rich to give to the poor in order to make justice. Tired of chasing Robin
Hood around, the Sheriff finally decides to kidnap Lady Marian so he can capture him. Robin Hood and Little John
go to Nottingham to rescue Lady Marian. Robin Hood and the Sheriff face each other in a fight, but Robin showing
his handy skills, defeats him. At the same time, Friar Tuck announces the good news that King Richard has returned
from the crusades and has recovered his kingdom and declared that the Sheriff must go to jail. Finally, Robin Hood
and Lady Marian get married.

LITTLE JOHN: Fine! What happened?
FRIAR TUCK: The Sheriff kidnapped Lady Marian.
LITTLE JOHN: How can that be? Who knew about her hiding place?
FRIAR TUCK: That’s the strange thing. I was the only one who knew. And I haven’t said a word to anyone.
LITTLE JOHN: Then maybe someone heard you. Have you spoke to anyone about this?
FRIAR TUCK: No that I remember. (Thinks) Oh, yes. I talked to Robin.
LITTLE JOHN: To Robin?
FRIAR TUCK: Yes, I told him exactly where she was.
LITTLE JOHN: Let’s ask him. Robin!
ROBIN: Ahhh! You scared me! What’s the matter with you?!
LITTLE JOHN: Friar Tuck is here. He said Lady Marian was kidnapped by the Sheriff.
ROBIN: Kidnapped?
LITTLE JOHN: Yes. And he says he told you about where she was.
ROBIN: Me? No! I haven´t spoke to him. (To Friar) Friar, explain me the news.
FRIAR TUCK: Who are you?
ROBIN: Me! Robin!
FRIAR TUCK: Robin, Lady Marian is in trouble! Didn’t you go to see her? I told you where she was.

thought you were dead! After the wedding, when they took you, I thought the worst…
ROBIN: Fortunately I could escape.
MARIAN: And what about the Sheriff? He must be chasing you!
ROBIN: He runs after me all the time. Don’t worry about him, he’s is a clumsy fool!
MARIAN: Yes, but he stole our lands and now we have to pay taxes for anything we do.
ROBIN: Yes, I know. People are suffering, but there´s not much we can do now, but resist.
MARIAN: Robin, I’ve missed you so much. I don’t want to leave you again.
ROBIN: And you won’t. Listen. Now I live in Sherwood Forest. Why don’t you come with me?
MARIAN: I can’t, even less now that things are complicated. I have my family here. I must stay with
them.
ROBIN: All right, but if you have any trouble you know how to find me.
MARIAN: I will.
ROBIN: I promise that when this ends we will finish what we started. And we will get married!
MARIAN: I’m looking forward to that.
