Commencement Commentary
The procedure followed for the awarding of degrees at UNO and most other American
universities is based on a practice developed at the University of Paris almost 800 years
ago. In those days the Bishop of Paris, like every other bishop, was responsible for local
educational curricula and degree-granting. His authority in these matters, however, soon
came to be disputed by the teachers. They asserted that only they could be the proper
judges of the qualifications of their students.
This threatened impasse was resolved by a compromise, under which the teachers, or
masters, judged the merits of the students and then recommended them to the Bishop
for their degrees. Today’s ceremony includes a secularized version of that procedure. Each
dean, as a representative of the faculty, certifies that the student candidates are qualified
to receive their degrees. The President or other representative of the Board of Supervisors
then awards the degrees.
Academic Costumes
The caps and gowns worn by graduates and faculty are based on costumes used in
universities of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, particularly at Oxford and Cambridge
in England. This academic dress has been used in the United States from colonial times
and was standardized by an Intercollegiate Code in 1895. Like military of medieval times
with its pages, squires, and knights, the academic world has long had three basic grades of
dignity and achievement. These are undergraduates, bachelors, and masters (or doctors).
The distinction between masters and doctors is comparatively recent; both imply the right
to teach.
Black is the most common color for academic gowns. There is no trimming on the
gowns for the bachelor’s or master’s degrees. For the doctoral degree, the gown is faced
down the front with black or colored velvet and with three bars of the same across the
sleeves. The color in the master’s costume is restricted to the hood worn around the neck
and down the back. This is lined with silk of a color which indicates the subject area
of the degree received. Thus the master’s hood from The University of New Orleans is
black, lined in silver with a blue chevron and edged in white velvet for Arts, Letters, and
Humanities, copper for Accounting, drab for Business, light blue for Education, orange for
Engineering, brown for Fine Arts and Urban and Regional Planning, sage green for Health
and Physical Education, pink for Music, dark blue for Philosophy, peacock blue for Public
Administration, and golden yellow for Sciences.
Doctors have a larger and more open hood which, like the masters’ hood, is lined with
the colors of the degree-granting institution and trimmed with the color of the subject
area of the degree received. As noted above, gowns have black or colored velvet on the
sleeves and the front. A Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry, for example, will have a black
velvet-edged gown and a hood trimmed in golden yellow. Usually doctors will wear a gold
tassel on their cap. In recent years, some universities have broken away from the traditional
scheme and allowed their doctors to wear brighter, more original costumes; for instance,
Yale’s blue with black trim and Harvard’s crimson and black.
Hoods are not worn by candidates for bachelor’s degrees at UNO.
Candidates who are members of certain select honors societies have been granted official
permission to wear specified emblems of their organizations. No other ornamentation is
permitted.

Academic Ceremonies
Many factors — such as the nature of the institution, the size of the graduating class, the
weather, and the place of ceremony (indoors or outdoors) — affect the details of academic
ceremonies. Institutions have wide latitude in meeting these conditions, and consequently
there is considerable variation in customs. At UNO the commencement procession is
composed of representatives of the faculty and a platform party consisting of administrative
officials, representatives of the Board of Supervisors, the commencement speaker, the person
giving the benediction and invocation, and distinguished guests.
Degrees are conferred in descending order, with doctorates first and bachelor’s degrees last.
The University of New Orleans, then LSUNO, conferred its first bachelor’s degrees to 65
candidates at the Spring Commencement of 1962. Its first master’s degrees were awarded to six
graduate students in 1965 and the first doctoral degree in 1967.
*Adapted in part from American Universities and Colleges, 6th Edition, Washington; American Council on
Education, 1971.
University Mace
The University of New Orleans Mace is borne before the Platform Party as a symbol of
authority in the Procession and Recession. The Platform Party is composed of the President,
members of the Board of Supervisors, other University authorities, and distinguished guests.
The Mace was first presented on September 6, 1988 at the Academic Convocation
commemorating the University’s September 5, 1958 opening ceremony. Commissioned in
January, 1988, the Mace was conceptualized by Professor Howard Jones, Chairman of the
Department of Fine Arts, and refined and executed by Mr. Doug MacCash, a graduate
assistant working under the supervision of Professor Jones.
The Mace’s bronze head is mounted on a mahogany shaft and has many levels of
imagery. Subtle features of the artifact symbolize the composition, mission, and vitality of
the University. Emblematic of authority, the Mace has the name and year of appointment of
each of the University’s leaders engraved on separate bronze rings at the base of the shaft.
The President’s Medallion
Traditionally, a University’s chief executive officer possesses a badge of office that he or she
wears at convocations, commencements, or other ceremonial occasions. To honor that custom,
the original Chancellor’s Medallion was struck and presented on the occasion of the inauguration
of Dr. Leon J.V. Richelle, UNO’s second leader, in 1981. In commemoration of UNO’s 50th
Anniversary in 2008, the UNO Federal Credit Union presented to the University the gift of a new
Medallion to be worn by Chancellor Timothy P. Ryan and all successors to that office. With the
transfer of UNO to the University of Louisiana System, the leader is the President.
The entire antiqued silver-plated four-inch medallion and chain feature The University of
New Orleans seal encircled by fourteen one-and-one-half inch squares and seventeen banners.
Twelve of the squares are engraved with UNO above a fleur-de-lis. Two squares are engraved with
the 50th Anniversary logo. Six of the banners are engraved with UNO’s leaders’ names and dates
of service. The banner immediately above the medallion bears the word President.
Variations of this medallion may be struck on special occasions to honor extraordinary and
distinguished service to the University.

Academic Honors
The University of New Orleans recognizes undergraduate students who attain academic
honors in three ways. A student may pursue the normal curriculum of a subject area and
obtain honors by virtue of high grades. There are three designations in this category: summa
cum laude (with the highest praise), requiring an overall grade-point average of 3.900-4.000;
magna cum laude (with great praise), requiring an overall grade-point average of 3.750-3.899;
and cum laude (with praise), requiring an average of 3.500-3.749.
A student may also graduate with University Honors, which carries with it Honors in
__________ (the particular field). This achievement requires the student to earn 30 honors
credits through special courses and additional work in regular courses, maintain a grade-point
average of at least 3.50 in the chosen subject area, with at least a 3.25 in all work taken, and
write a senior honors thesis.
Or a student may follow the normal curriculum of a subject area, write a senior honors thesis,
and graduate with Honors in ____________ (the particular field). To achieve departmental
honors, the student also maintains a grade-point average of at least 3.50 in the subject area,
with 3.25 in all work taken.

The list of candidates for graduation was prepared before final grades were reported;
thus, the listing of a name in this program should not be construed as documentation
that the person listed will, in fact, receive a degree from the University of New Orleans
at this commencement. Conversely, some students who are not listed may be awarded
degrees. The same applies to the listing of students graduating with honors.

The Alma Mater
UNO, Our Alma Mater
Proud we stand to sing your fame

When our years with you have gone
And keep us true
to the Silver and Blue.
