Big Sky Eagle News January 2017 Volume , Issue One Evening in January On January 19th the Big Sky drama department hosted the 8th annual One Night in January benefit concert music show. This year’s concert was directed by Bradie Matt in partial fulfillment of her senior project. Many talented students performed as well as a couple of gifted staff members. In this Issue: One Evening in January Pg. 1 Thanks to DECA Pg. 1 Lip Dub Link Pg. 1 News from the Principal Pg. 2 MCPS Mobile App The One Night in January benefit concert has been a huge success in the past, raising money for unique causes. This was a great opportunity for community members to support an important cause while enjoying a night of wonderful music. This year’s proceeds were donated to the Big Sky High School Performing Arts. The Big Sky High School Theatre Department, Troupe 3090, is a student run theatre company where the students are responsible for all aspects of every show, ranging from organization and promotion, to lighting and sound. They work alongside industry professionals to learn the trick-of the trade. Great job Bradie and to all of the performers. Big Sky DECA contributed $340 for a Traffic Education scholarship during the 8th Grade Showcase. The lucky winner was Mark Krstulich who currently attends Meadow Hill Middle School and will attend Big Sky next year. Congratulations Mark! In addition—DECA has been working for about a year and BSHS finally has an ATM. It is located next to the trophy cases by the office. Some questions you may have: No DECA does not get a kickback (wish we did). We just felt that it was something we needed at our school. We do not have access to the money. If there is a problem, the user needs to contact their financial institution and they will contact Missoula Credit Union. Applicable fees apply. Have you seen it? Big Sky Lip Dub. In February your student will start requesting courses for next year. If you would like information about what the course request options are, please take a look at our useful Counseling Department Website (found under “Departments” on Big Sky Website). There is a description of graduation requirements, courses offered, and even videos that describe some electives. This is a great resource for students and gives families the information needed to discuss options prior to your student requesting courses. Additionally, after your student has requested courses you can check on these requests through Q. Even though the final schedules will not be done for a few months, viewing course requests will give you information about what your student has chosen. You can click on “Requests” on the left side of your student’s Q profile to see what he or she is requesting. I hope these resources give you the information you need to support and guide your student. I am grateful for the hard work of our counseling staff in making this information more available and accessible to students and families. As always, if you have questions or concerns don’t hesitate to email or call your student’s counselor. MCPS LAUNCHES NEW MOBILE APP Missoula County Public Schools launched a new communication tool, the MCPS Mobile App, through the Blackboard platform for staff, students, parents and com-munity members on Wednesday, January 18. The mobile app provides users the ability to select, follow and receive messages from one or multiple MCPS schools. Users will receive school messages through the mobile app that does not require the use of texting or email. In addition, the mobile app provides easy access to the Q portals, school menus, Aesop (substitute portal), and more! This versatile app isn’t just for parents! Staff and students can access the Moodle, Google, check grades and more with ease through their mobile device. The app is FREE and available now in the Google Play Store, App Store or scan the QR code with any iOS or Android device. Volume , Issue Page 3 FARRAR RECIEVES EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD The Missoula Education Foundation (MEF) Student Board received nominations for the MEF High School Educator of the Year award. During the Big Sky High School all-school assembly held on Thursday, December 22, Agricultural Education teacher Richard Farrar was presented with the MEF High School Educator of the Year Award. Farrar is a Big Sky High School graduate and has been a teacher in the MCPS Agriculture Education program since 2013. Farrar’s wife, baby and parents were also in attendance. MISSOULA ROBOTICS TEAM 3216 Missoula Robotics Team was founded seven years ago and is comprised of students from Big Sky, Hellgate, Sentinel, and other learning opportunities. There are 30 team members and 8 mentors that meet from October through April each year. Missoula Robotics recognizes high achievement in participating students by offering an opportunity to letter each year. Missoula Robotics Team participates in community outreach by serving as mentors for elementary and middle school students learning robotics. They fundraise for robotics competitions to allow for purchasing of materials and travel expenses. Missoula Robotics students experience personal growth, scholarship opportunities, and potential career paths in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math. One of the most exciting opportunities during robotics is currently underway where students spend six weeks designing and building a robot to participate in a FIRST Robotics Competition. This will occur April 5th-April 9, 2017 in Calgary. If you are interested in joining, supporting, mentoring, or donating to Missoula Robotics, please contact Dori Pinkerton at [email protected] or [email protected] To learn more about the overall program, see www.firstinspires.org Finally, follow the team at: our website: www.mrt3216.org or on Facebook at Missoula Robotics Team 3216. FIRST INTERSTATE DONATION The Big Sky High School’s band is one step closer towards purchasing a greatly needed sousaphone ($4000), thanks to a $1000 donation from the First Interstate Bank of Missoula and a matching grant from the First Interstate Foundation. Thank you First Interstate Bank for supporting our local students and music programs. AMAZING STAFF RECOGNITION We know we have amazing staff here at Big Sky, but sometimes we need to take a moment to recognize those that go the extra mile for our students and families. This year Janice McGraw— our Special Education secretary— has started a new tradition with helping our students in need. Instead of Janice giving her own kids (who are all grown) their birthday money, she is finding Big Sky students who are in need of financial assistance and giving that money to them. The students and families have been overwhelmed with this generosity! Eagle News Page 4 COURSE REQUESTS—INFO FROM THE COUNSELING CENTER The Big Sky High School Counselors will be going into all the grade level classrooms to help students make their course requests for next year. The class period time will include presentations on course requirements, courses offered, and essentials to keep in mind as the students prepare for their next year. In addition, all students will evaluate their transcripts to make sure they are on track to graduate. Students will be made aware of new schedule change policies which include: No schedule changes the first day of school. All schedule changes must be completed within the first five days of the semester. Students may only change their schedule once. So be prepared when you come in! Students cannot drop a yearlong class after the first five days of each semester. Class sizes need to be balanced so we cannot move students from a small class into a larger class. Students with IEPs need to discuss their desired schedule changes with their Case Manager. Schedules will only be changed for the following reasons: Sequence of courses is out of order (Example: Advanced weight training semester 1/Beginning weight training semester 2) Incomplete schedule. Keep in mind that in some cases, your alternative course had to be used in completing your schedule. You’re scheduled for a course that you did not request. Failure of a course that must be repeated. A summer school course has been passed. A required course to graduate was not scheduled. SOAR RECOGNITION This year at Big Sky we are focusing on our SOAR expectations of Show Respect, Open-Mindedness, Aspire to Graduate, and Responsibility. At every monthly assembly we honor students and staff for showing these attributes and now we have gone viral! If you stop at any Noon’s Gas Station in Missoula, you will see our students who have received this recognition highlighted on their video screens! Way to go Eagles and thanks to Noon’s and Cherry Creek Radio! Students with fewer than 5 absences each semester, attending 95% of the school year, experience greater academic success and connection to their school. Here’s to those Big Sky Students who have met that goal during the month of December! Congratulations and keep up the amazing work! You ROCK!
