What Are Aggressive Dog Breeds?
Many apartment complexes will not allow “aggressive breeds” and the definition of what an aggressive breed is depends
on the apartment management company. Many times the list consists of the following:
This list includes the following breeds, but is not limited to the following breeds. Any dog that has a bite history is
prohibited. Akita, American Strafford Terrier, Bull Terrier, Bullmastiff, Chow Chow, Dingo, Doberman Pinscher, Giant
Schnauzer, German Shepherd, Mastiff, Ovtcharka, Presa Canario, Pit Bull, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Rottweiler, Neapolitan
Mastiff and Wolf. Any mixed breeds that have the predominant characteristics of any of the above breeds are also
prohibited.
I’ve had a few clients tell me they “lie” about the breed and tell the complex that a Pit Bull is a Cajun Coon Dog or another
off-breed. This could open you up for a lawsuit and is something I would never advise nor should you consider.
Many apartments list the dogs they will not accept on their web sites. A few will allow a mixed breed if a vet will certify
that the dog does not contain the predominant characteristics of the prohibited “aggressive breed”.
I keep a list of the apartment complexes that will take some of these breeds. In some cases, the tenant will be required to
maintain a high Rental Insurance Policy in case the dog does bit a resident. These policies are often very inexpensive (less
than $20 per month).
