June 4 - Beaver Municipal Solutions

Did you Know?
As a follow-up to last week’s schematic drawing of a typical municipal
solid waste landfill, we are going to address the topic of the Bottom
Liner System.
A landfill's major purpose and one of its biggest challenges is to contain
the waste so that the waste doesn't cause problems in the environment.
The bottom liner prevents the waste from coming in contact with the
outside soil, particularly the groundwater. Landfills are built with special liner materials that keep the stored waste away from contaminating
underlying soils.
The liner system for Stage 5 of our landfill will consist of: (from top to
bottom)
• A layer of geotextile (the waste sits on top of this fabric)
• A 450 millimetre thick layer of specially-tested tire shred material to
collect and carry to drainage any contaminated waters leaching from
the waste
• A 150 millimetre thick sand cushion to protect the liner materials below
• Another layer of geotextile
• A 60 mil (1.5 millimetre) thick High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
sheet
• A geocomposite liner that contains highly impermeable (i.e. watertight) clay materials like bentonite
• A recompacted 300 millimetre thick layer of the site’s natural clay
This liner construction is designed to meet or be above the Government
of Alberta’s landfill standard of a maximum hydraulic conductivity of 1 x
10-9 metres per second. That’s water moving less than 0.000000001
metres per second, or said another way, 0.0000000394 inches per second. That’s a lot more waterproof than a raincoat!
In fact, the natural clay where the BMS landfill is located has been tested in-situ (that means field-tested) to have a hydraulic conductivity
approaching 1 x 10-12 metres/second, another 1000 times slower!
Employee of the Week
Chase
is
another
Ryleyite who started
working at BMS while still
in high school student,
working with us from
2009 – 2011. Chase left
for a few years during
which time he tried out
Heavy Duty Mechanic’s
training at Olds College,
but decided that wasn’t
for him.
Chase has
always
loved
being
around heavy equipment
– his mother Tracy tells
how if he heard anything
Chase Janus
loud coming into the
yard, he was out the
door, ready to climb on board and drive. Chase decided to pursue his life-long
dream and was fortunate to gain experience working on tractors, rock trucks
and packers with both Krane and Sureway Construction. When the opportunity became available at Beaver Municipal Solutions for him to continue his
career as an equipment operator he was happy to return.
When asked what he likes to do away from work, Chase eagerly responded
that he likes to visit heavy equipment auctions!
