Vision Statement
Mater Dei College believes in the dignity and the nurturing of the individual
and seeks to follow, with courage, Mary’s example of faith.
From the Principal
SEMESTER 2 BEGINS
NEW ZEALAND TOUR
I extend a warm welcome to all in the Mater Dei College community.
Our Tour Group returned from their successful tour of the ski slopes of
New Zealand over the semester break. A very enjoyable experience
was had by all.
I hope the Semester break has proven to be enjoyable, restful and
reinvigorating for students, parents and staff. We look forward to a
very smooth start to Semester 2 and all that the coming academic
term holds.
Term 3 is an important preparatory term whereby the focus on
improved academic outcomes sets the scene for a successful
conclusion to the year. I urge students to ‘lift their game another
notch’ during this critical time. As we often hear in sporting circles,
the ‘third quarter is the championship quarter’. Games can be won
or lost depending on how the third quarter plays out. In a similar
fashion, let’s make this Term 3 the ‘championship term’ as far as
students’ academic performance is concerned.
TERM DATES
A student-free day is scheduled for Monday 24 August. Please mark
this day in your family calendar as the College will not be open for
normal business.
STAFF MATTERS
I would like to welcome back from leave Mr John Crooks and Mrs
Kerry Byrom-Carter as they rejoin our community this term. I would
also like to welcome Ms Maree Grayden who is replacing Miss
Urqhuart in teaching Drama this semester.
YEAR 7 2017 ENROLMENTS
Letters of Offer of enrolment places for Year 7 2017 were posted
last term. Parents are requested to confirm their acceptance
of their enrolment intentions by the end of July. If there are any
queries concerning the Enrolment Offer, please contact the College
Enrolment Officer, Mrs Angela Lourens, to resolve your concerns.

2015 - 2016 Student Leadership
As the term of office of our College Student Leaders came to an end at the conclusion of Semester 1, we wish to extend our
gratitude to all members of the College Student Executive Council and to all the House Leaders. They have carried out their
service of leadership in an exemplary and impressive manner.
We welcome our 2015 Student Leadership Group, all of whom were introduced to the College’s student community at the
Assembly held on the last day of the Semester.
Congratulations to the following students who are members of the Student Executive Council:
Sharnee Ainsworth
Teneika Bruce-Burgess
Breanna Galea
Amy Haigh
Mikaela Piastrella
Zoe Smith
Megan Wilkinson
Brodie Atkinson
Ryan Brown
Michael Cole
Bailey Kempton
Frasier McAteer
Zac Turner
Michael Uhrhane
They will be ably led for the next six months by our Head and Deputy Head Girl and Boy, who are appointed on a calendar year
basis:
Rochanne Berecz, Zac Bosnakis, Maddison Fazzalari and Mason Smith.
These students attended a Leadership Training Day during the last Friday of the holidays. The students participated wholeheartedly and thoughtfully as we focussed on topics such as Christian Leadership, team building and interpersonal skills. From
the interactions there, the indications are that we will have a very productive, innovative and tireless group and we very much look
forward to working with them all over the next twelve months.
Congratulations to the 2015-2016 House Leaders. Mr Byrne (House Coordinator) and the House Advisors were extremely
impressed with the calibre of the candidates for the House Leader positions. We have no doubt that all will do a fine job for the
House.

Whose Uniform Item Is That?
There have been numerous reports of items of uniform (from
ties to trousers and everything in between) that have gone
missing during the term. It would be very helpful and much
appreciated by some families if parents/guardians could
check to ensure that all of the College clothing in your child’s
possession has not been mistakenly accumulated when
getting changed at school. This check, however, will only be
of any value if the clothing has been marked with the child’s
name. The importance of ensuring that every piece of clothing
is permanently and clearly marked cannot be stressed
enough.
If you locate any items of uniform or other such materials that
have mistakenly been acquired, it would be appreciated if you
return them to Student Services or to the Uniform Shop.

School Fees
It was a College requirement that school fees be paid in full
by 31 March for families that are not on an approved payment
plan. As a matter of justice to other parents and students at
the College all parents are required to meet their financial
commitments.
Consideration will be given to parents that are experiencing
financial hardship. If you have not made arrangements to
enter into a payment plan please make an appointment to
discuss further with the Assistant Business Manager, Mr Sean
McDonagh.

During Term 2 the MDC Chess Competition was held with 26
students from years 7 to 12. The intensity of the games and the
skills shown by all the players was incredible. A very big thank
you to all of the students who participated for the sportsmanship
and behaviour shown by them all as it was exceptional
and I would like to thank you all for making this a fantastic
competition.
The Grand Final was played between Kurt Andersen from
year 7 and Matthew Alphonso from year 8 and was so intense
it was carried over two sessions. Many students watched in
amazement as the two boys tried to outwit each other.
The Winner of the MDC Chess Competition is Kurt Andersen.
Congratulation Kurt Andersen for winning the completion and to
Matthew Alphonso for being a very worthy opponent.

Real Kids in an Unreal World
Building Resilience and Self Esteem in Today’s Children (10 Resilience Building Blocks)
Are you worried, confused or concerned about parenting in today’s chaotic world? Children
need to have certain basic experiences to build the competencies that will help them manage
life — the good, the bad and the ugly. Popular Australian parenting author and educator Maggie
Dent published her bestselling book, Real Kids in an Unreal World in 2008 to help guide parents
in raising children who are happy, healthy, strong, kind and resilient. In this seminar, Maggie will
explore her common-sense, practical model of 10 building blocks for children birth-12 that will
reassure parents that what we have always known to be important in these years of a child’s life is
still important. This seminar will offer you practical, common-sense ideas and strategies to make
small changes in your home, which will make a big difference to your children’s cognitive, physical,
psychological, emotional and social health later in life.
