Your rehab may last from 4-12 weeks, and it is important to complete the recommended plan. You can benefit from cardiac rehab if you have had a heart attack or heart failure, have angina or have had angioplasty, coronary artery bypass or valve surgery. Almost everyone with heart disease can benefit from some type of cardiac rehab. No one is too old or too young, and women and men benefit equally. How does cardiac rehab work? Exercise Training This helps you learn how to exercise safely, strengthen your muscles and improve your stamina. Your exercise will be based on your individual ability, needs and interests. The cardiac rehab team will help you learn how to cope with the stress of adjusting to a new lifestyle and to deal with your fear about the future. Recovering from Heart Problems through Cardiac Rehabilitation www.kaleidahealth.org DMH-075 04/07 Cardiac Rehabilitation Inpatient Program – Phase I Phase I Cardiac Rehabilitation includes education and supervised activity for hospital patients recovering from a cardiac illness. Outpatient Program – Phase II Phase II Cardiac Rehabilitation includes ECGmonitored exercise training, education and counseling to help the individual understand their heart condition and find ways to reduce risk of future heart problems. A physician referral begins the Phase II rehab process. Generally classes are three times per week for about 1 to 1½ hours. Free parking is offered. Individuals have the benefit of continuing their prescriptive exercise program in a supervised setting and modifying cardiac risk factors. Phase III open sessions are offered at various times. DeGraff Memorial Hospital Monday thru Friday Special Programs Smoking Cessation Program Kaleida Health’s Cardiac Rehab team wants to help you become smoke-free. The four-session smoking cessation program includes group support and motivational tips, healthy lifestyle changes and using the New York State Quit Line for support and free nicotine replacement products. Instruction also includes the use of nicotine replacement products and information regarding reimbursement from your insurance company upon successful completion of the program. These programs are conducted three to five times per year. Members of the team who will be involved in your care are registered nurses, physical therapists, exercise physiologists and registered dietitians. Your physician(s) will be involved regarding your progress and/or changes, on a regular basis. Our professionals provide medical supervision, education, exercise guidance and nutrition counseling.
