3) Title of Workshop – Discussing the role of SEAZA members in averting
species extinctions within the Asian Species Action Partnership (ASAP)
Zoos and Aquaria have a particularly important role to play in averting the extinction of
threatened species as many require integrating ex-situ actions such as captive breeding or the
creation of assurance colonies with in situ actions such as reintroduction and protection in
natural habitats.
This workshop will serve as a brainstorming session on how SEAZA members, through linking
with the Asian Species Action Partnership (ASAP), can improve and increase the impact of
their conservation programs for threatened Southeast Asian vertebrate species.
ASAP is an interagency coalition that aims to catalyse, strengthen and coordinate
conservation actions for Critically Endangered species (IUCN Red List) in South-east Asia. The
programme is advised by the IUCN Species Survival Commission Specialist Groups and Red
List authorities.
